Putting on a well drilled performance against a well-coached St Pats Stream side. Even with a strong individual performance by Stream captain Asafo Amumua, it was the experience of Murphy Albright along with the Umaga – Jensen twins, Thomas and Peter of Wainuiomata High that proved to be the difference in the end with Thomas scoring a hat-trick before half time in the 36 – 22 win. Seniors COLLEGE SPORT CUP After a dramatic semi- final that went into extra time with Wellington College, Naenae were set to play Porirua in the College Sport Cup final, unfortunately Porirua were unable to field a team which meant Naenae won by default making them the 2012 College Sport Cup winners. STEPHEN KEARNEY CUP TAITA and Marino win again! It’s been a great year for the Wellington Rugby League Coach of the year Darryl Marino. Who has not only won the Wellington Rugby League Premiership title with Randwick, but he has now won back to back titles in the Stephen Kearney Cup with Taita College. Taita met with last year’s College Sport Cup winners Wainuiomata High School in this year’s SKC Grand Final. With both teams unbeaten this season this was destined to be a great match. Taita drew first blood and not long after it was WHS turn to add points to the scoreboard. Conceding points seemed to have lifted Taita and they turned up the heat by playing a very clinical brand of football. Wellington Orcas 17’s half, Starr Masae, directed the Taita team around the field well with barnstorming runs from center Mate Mulikiha’amea eating up meters. Although WHS scored again late in the 2nd half it was too little too late with Taita winning comfortably by 44 points to 10.

THE ACTION KICKS OFF THIS SATURDAY NIGHT Sir Peter Leitch Club Newsletter RLWC 2017 24th October 2017 It’s 4 days until the Kiwis play # their first game of the 2017 RLWC 193 Back The Kiwis By Enjoying Lunch By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan E ARE only days from the kick-off of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, with Australia and England W– in what will be a hell of a match - doing the honours on Friday night. Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them.

Welcome to “PASS IT ON…” Wellington Rugby Leagues enewsletter for 2010. The idea of “PASS IT ON…” is that you do just that and forward it to as many people as you can, who then forward it to as many people as they can. The more people we can tell about the World of Wellington Rugby League the better!!! Message from Dingo Where is the rain? No doubt we will all be crying out for it to go away in the months ahead but it would be great to get a good dumping in the next week or so just to soften the fields a bit and get the grass growing again. That aside wasn’t it fantastic to see junior footy get underway last weekend with lots of supporters around the grounds in the sunshine and heaps of kids out there enjoying throwing the ball around. Our junior numbers are growing and that is a testament to the hard workers in all our local clubs. Parents, coaches and volunteers, sometimes one in the same, are the lifeblood of our game and I thank you all for your commitment to making sure our kids enjoy the great game. At the senior level Porirua again lead the way in premiers with Petone, University, Wainuiomata and Randwick bunched in behind and all capable of knocking off the premiers on their day. St George, Te Aroha and Upper Hutt are all working hard without much success and will need considerable improvement to challenge the 5 sides above them. Premier reserves see University and Randwick leading the way both undefeated, their clash this week should see an outright leader.

Rest in Peace, Sir Colin Meads By Sir Peter Leitch T WAS with great sadness on Sunday morning that I got a phone call from Sir Colin Meads’ family to say Ithat he had passed away. We all know Sir Colin (Pine Tree) was a famous All Black - number 583 - who made 55 test appearances for the All Blacks, and went on to be captain. He also played 139 games for King Country, and who knows how many for his beloved local team Waitete. We all also know what a great man he was, but what a lot of people don't know, is the great charity work he has done over many years. We had been mates for more years than I care to remember, and I witnessed many charity events he did, some of them even alongside me. He did some TV commercials too, and donated the money to charity. One example of a charity he supported was IHC, where he was involved for more than 40 years. There is nothing I can add to everything that is being said, and I don’t want to, because I am feeling the great loss of a close and dear friend.

The days of being blinded by the sunlight flashing off Manu Vatuvei’s gold teeth are Iover. The big fellah is off to Salford in the English Super League, having been granted an early release from the contract he had with us to the end of the 2018 season. It is a strangely empty felling, given I have been cheering for the bloke for a decade. “Manu is a club legend,” managing director Jim Doyle said. “We didn’t make this decision lightly but after years of service we didn’t want to stand in his way.” I can’t say anything this week that I did not say last week, so farewell Warrior No 115, and thanks for the 226 appearances, some of them great, some not, but you will always be “The Beast” to me, even if, having come to know you a little bit, it is the most ill-suited name they could possibly have given you. I will miss your presence, I will miss your smile, I will miss your laughter. I will miss your carries, I will miss your all or noth- ing approach, and I will miss your tries. The 36-year-old, who guided the Kiwis to World Cup glory against all odds last year, comes off contract after the Four Nations, which ends mid-November. Anzac test defeats seen as brand damage to Kiwis: NEW ZEALAND officials are concerned that the Kiwi brand is becoming damaged by one-sided Anzac test defeats, and a former NZRL chairman has called for the mid-year game to be scrapped. Senior Kiwi and Australian officials will meet in the next month to discuss plans for the year-end Four Nations tournament, but New Zealand will also want debate over the future of this game. There is no long-term contract for the match, which is agreed to on an annual basis. It was classic Benji – good and bad: After engineering – almost single-handedly – a win for the Tigers over the Knights on a recent sunny Sunday afternoon, Benji Marshall was described by astute league analyst Phil Gould as “an enigma; a mystery wrapped up in a riddle”. That same enigma was back last night at Suncorp Stadium and, perhaps more importantly, he had the extra responsibility of captaining his world champion Kiwis against a fired up Aussie side hell-bent on revenge.
