TEAM NOTES:

WESTERN CANADA SWING Tonight’s game signals the beginning of the team’s annual trip through Western Canada, as they’ll take on Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver over the next five days. Last season, Pittsburgh went a perfect 3-0, as they defeated the Oilers on October 23 (6-5 OTW), the Flames on October 25 (9-1 W) and the Canucks on October 27 (5-0). Last year’s trip was highlighted by Sidney Crosby’s sensational overtime winner in Edmonton, a nine-goal outburst in Calgary, and goaltender Casey DeSmith’s second career shutout in Vancouver. The Penguins outscored their three opponents by a 20-6 margin on that trip.

Pittsburgh has historically fared well on its Western Canada swing. Over the last nine seasons that they’ve made the trip dating back to the 2007-08 season, they’ve gone 19-4-4 which includes a 6-1-2 record over the last three seasons.

IN RUST WE TRUST Another game, another clutch performance from Bryan Rust. The speedy winger netted two more goals in regulation on Saturday against the Kings (2G-1A total), and followed suit with the game-deciding goal in the shootout on his first career shootout attempt.

Despite only playing in 19 games so far this season, Rust, who has 12 goals on the year, is quickly approaching his career high of 18 goals which he scored in 72 games last season. His .63 goals-per-game average is best on Pittsburgh, and is tied for third in the NHL behind only Boston’s David Pastrnak and Buffalo’s Jack Eichel:

Player GP G G/GM David Pastrnak 34 28 .82 Jack Eichel 34 23 .68 Bryan Rust 19 12 .63 Nathan Mackinnon 32 20 .63 Alex Ovechkin 34 21 .62

Rust is currently riding a three-game point streak (3G-2A), with all three goals coming in his last two games.

DECEMBER TO REMEMBER Jake Guentzel picked up three more points (3A) on Saturday night, as he’s continued to be one of Pittsburgh’s best players night in and night out. His three assists tied a career high (also Mar. 19, 2017 vs. FLA and Dec. 6, 2018 vs. NYI), and extended his point streak to five games (2G-7A), giving him his third point streak of five or more games this season (also Oct 5-18, 7GP; Nov. 16-29, 7GP). During his five-game point streak, Guentzel has figured in on 69.2% of Pittsburgh’s goals (9/13).

He currently has nine points (2G-7A) in six games in the month of December, good for a 1.5 points-per-game average. His seven assists this month are tied for first in the NHL, while his nine points are tied for seventh during that span. He has yet to have a month this season where he’s averaged under a point per game:

Month GP G A PTS PTS/GM October 13 7 6 13 1.00 November 14 8 6 14 1.00 December 6 2 7 9 1.50

Guentzel is currently two assists shy of 100 in his career.

MALKIN CLOSING IN ON 400 GOALS Evgeni Malkin currently sits one goal shy of 400 in his career. He’s looking to join Mario Lemieux (690), Sidney Crosby (451) and Jaromir Jagr(439) as the only players in franchise history to score 400 goals. Malkin has led Pittsburgh in goals five times during his first 13 seasons with Pittsburgh. Only Lemieux (10 times) and Crosby (8 times) have led the Penguins in goals in a season more times.

Malkin is also looking to become the eighth active player to score 400 goals:

Player Goals Alex Ovechkin 679 Patrick Marleau 557 Sidney Crosby 451 Ilya Kovalchuk 436 Eric Staal 429 Joe Thornton 413 406 Evgeni Malkin 399

WRANGLING THE WEST The Penguins have been dominant against the Western Conference this season. In 16 games played against the West, the Penguins have gone 12-3-1, which ranks first in wins among Eastern Conference teams. Throughout the entire NHL, the Penguins’ 12 wins against the West are tied for fourth.

Coming into tonight’s game, the Penguins have won six-consecutive home games against the West, and have a 3-1-0 record on the road.

Versus the West, Jake Guentzel leads the Penguins in goals, assists (tied), and points (9G-9A).

71 WITHOUT 87 With Sidney Crosby sidelined after undergoing successful surgery, the Penguins will look to Evgeni Malkin to take charge and lead by example. In 134 career games without Crosby, Malkin has 72 goals, 109 assists and 181 points. Below is a look at Malkin’s career totals with, and without, Crosby:

Situation GP G A PTS PTS/GM With Crosby 738 327 521 848 1.15 Without Crosby 134 72 109 181 1.35

In 14 games without Crosby this season, Malkin has 21 points (8G-13A).

NOTABLES FROM LAST GAME (DEC. 14 VS LAK) *Pittsburgh has grabbed points in 12 of its last 13 home games dating back to October 29 versus Philadelphia (10-1-2). *In their third jerseys, Pittsburgh is now 4-1-1 this season, improving their record in yellow to 14-3-1 all-time. *Kris Letang recorded his 14th career three-assist game and his 22nd career three-point outing with assists on both of Bryan Rust’s and Teddy Blueger’s goals. *Tristan Jarry stopped 38 of 42 shots on goal, an Anze Kopitar penalty shot and all three Los Angeles’ shooters in the shootout to record his eighth win at home this season (8-2-0). *Brandon Tanev delivered 8 hits, the fourth time this season he’s had at least 8 hits. Tanev ranks second in the NHL with 134 hits.
