Nursing Scholarship Honors Dr. Ken & Brenda Hoek

Scholarship Recipient Marlayna Trujillo and her family

Ukiah… In 2018, Dr. Scott Gherini and Holly Enzler established a scholarship for students enrolled in the Mendocino College Nursing Program. The scholarship has two parts; one to honor a local medical practitioner and two to provide the resources for a nursing student to stay in school and keep progressing towards their goal.

This year, Gherini and Enzler are thrilled to honor Dr. Ken Hoek and Mrs. Brenda Hoek for their dedication and service to the medical community in Mendocino County. Hoek is a long-time orthopedic surgeon and Brenda is a registered nurse working at Adventist Health Ukiah Valley.

The recipient of the $2,500 scholarship is Marlayna Trujillo a first year nursing student at Mendocino College. Trujillo is proudly following in the footsteps of her mother who is a nurse.

An Upper Lake High School graduate, Marlayna's medical journey began at San Joaquin Valley College by completing the medical assistant program in 2011. Presently, she works part time at Mendocino Community Health Clinics in Ukiah as a medical assistant.

This busy mom of five children (ages range from 6 to 16) has been juggling taking care of her family while studying and working part-time. Her grade point average at Mendocino College is a perfect 4.0. She is proudly teaching her children elements about what she’s learning in the nursing program and what it means to care for someone. She hopes to peak their interest and already sees a spark in a few of their eyes.

Marlyana will begin her second year in the nursing program this fall and her future plans include a degree as a family nurse practitioner. She says that the program is one of the hardest things that she has ever done, but loves every minute of it.

Peers describe her as intelligent, hard-working and ambitious. "We have no doubt that Marlayna Trujillo will be an outstanding nurse in our community," stated Dr. Gherini.

First Response Healthcare Student Support Fund Provides Funding for Mendocino College Nursing Students

Ukiah…The Mendocino College Foundation and Mendocino College Nursing Program Affiliate want to thank the Foundation for California Community Colleges, First Response Healthcare Student Support Fund who granted $4,545 in direct support to students enrolled in the Mendocino College Nursing Program.

On, April 13, 2020, the Foundation for California Community Colleges (Foundation), in partnership with the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, launched a Relief and Recovery Campaign, a statewide emergency response effort to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the first initiatives to result from the Relief and Recovery Campaign was the “First Response Healthcare Student Support Fund” (First Response Fund). Funds were given to help students who were facing adverse financial impacts of COVID-19 with their ability to stay enrolled and complete their education in California Community Colleges, while also helping address California’s pressing need to advance students in specific health care fields into its health care system. An estimated seven in ten of people in nursing and allied health have received their training in community colleges.

In early June, ten Mendocino College Nursing Students received $454.00 each to support them in their academic journey to become a health care practitioner. The Relief and Recovery Campaign’s goal was simply to improve students’ lives and learning during the pandemic, and to support the state’s recovery. “We are grateful for the State’s support during these turbulent times,” stated Peggy Goebel, Dean/Director of the Nursing Program.

For more information about the Mendocino College Foundation, or to donate to any of their programs or affiliate organizations; please contact Katie Fairbairn, Executive Director at [email protected]. 8.3.2 Thanks to You! Mendocino College Nursing Students were able to immediately take their NCLEX state board exams to become a nurse.

We raised $8050 which helped 23 nursing graduates pay for their $350 NCLEX exam fee.

“I ran out of funding during my last semester of the nursing program. I was worried about how to pay for everything. Receiving the funding for my NCLEX was one less thing I had to worry about, thank you.” - Jillian Koski, 3.79 GPA, president’s list; accepted a position at Howard Memorial Hospital’s new grad program in the Medical-Surgical Department.

“Thank you to all the sponsors for your contributions! I passed the NCLEX earlier this month, and I accepted an o er from Adventist Health Ukiah Valley to be a part of their new grad residency program.” - Chris Borg, 3.71 GPA, president’s list.

Together we created an environment to guarantee higher pass rates and more opportunity for students to pass their NCLEX exam the first time.

“I am a mother of two young children and those demands along with the nursing program was intense. Receiving the funding for my state board exams was a tremendous help which enabled me to immediately schedule my exam and not worry about how to pay for it.” - Brandie Trimble, 3.52 GPA, president’s list; accepted a position at Adventist Health Ukiah Valley in the Emergency Department.

“Once Covid-19 hit, I had my three children at home and I was preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner every day for all three, along with studying to complete my nursing program. Having my NCLEX fee’s paid for gave me a little breathing room. Thank you!” - Dominica Chilberg, 3.72 GPA, president’s list; accepted a position with Adventist Health Ukiah as an OB-Post Partum Nurse.

for providing $4,545 in direct support to students enrolled in the Mendocino College Nursing Program. Ten students received $454 on June 4, 2020.

“I used the funds from the FCCC to pay for my NCLEX state-board exam fees and to buy groceries. Once Covid-19 hit, I had my three children at home and I was preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner every day for all three, along with studying to complete my nursing program. It was a stressful time, but with help from everyone, it all worked out.” - Dominica Chilberg, graduate of the MC Nursing Program, May 2020. Dominica recently passed the NCLEX and received a position with Adventist Health Ukiah as an OB-Post Partum Nurse.

“The FCCC has contributed to the continued success of my education by providing me with funds that helped me to pay for my nursing state exam and that allowed me to become a licensed nurse and fulfill my career goals. I am starting a bridge program at Chico State to complete my Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and obtain a career at Adventist Health Ukiah Valley. Thank you so much, FCCC for investing in me and contributing to my continued success.” - Adrian Jackson, graduate of the MC Nursing Program, May 2020

“I used the gift from the FCCC to care for myself and my 5 year old son. I’m a single mom with Type 1 Diabetes. The funds bought groceries, paid bills and just got me by until I could get back on my feet.” - Ashley Massey, beginning her second year in the MC Nursing Program in Fall 2020. Ashley is excited to continue her educational journey.
