Introduction Nicholas Ray and the Potential of Cinema Culture STEVEN RYBIN AND WILL SCHEIBEL THE DIRECTOR OF CLASSIC FILMS SUCH AS They Live by Night, In a Lonely Place, Johnny Guitar, Rebel Without a Cause, and Bigger Than Life, among others, Nicholas Ray was the “cause célèbre of the auteur theory,” as critic Andrew Sarris once put it (107).1 But unlike his senior colleagues in Hollywood such as Alfred Hitchcock or Howard Hawks, he remained a director at the margins of the American studio system. So too has he remained at the margins of academic film scholarship. Many fine schol‑ arly works on Ray, of course, have been published, ranging from Geoff Andrew’s important auteur study The Films of Nicholas Ray: The Poet of Nightfall and Bernard Eisenschitz’s authoritative biography Nicholas Ray: An American Journey (both first published in English in 1991 and 1993, respectively) to books on individual films by Ray, such as Dana Polan’s 1993 monograph on In a Lonely Place and J. David Slocum’s 2005 col‑ lection of essays on Rebel Without a Cause. In 2011, the year of his centennial, the restoration of his final film,We Can’t Go Home Again, by his widow and collaborator Susan Ray, signaled renewed interest in the director, as did the publication of a new biography, Nicholas Ray: The Glorious Failure of an American Director, by Patrick McGilligan. Actor Jeffrey Hunter Dies of Injuries; Fall Believed Cause Actor Jeffrey Hunter, who portrayed Christ in the remake of the motion picture classic "King of Kings," died Tuesday from injuries believed suffered in a fall at his Van Nuys home, police reported. The 42-year-old Hunter, whose true name was Henry H. McKinnies Jr., was found unconscious by an unidentified friend Monday at 4:45 p.m. at the actor's home, 13451 Erwin St. Hunter had apparently fallen down a flight of stairs. The friend called the Fire Department and an ambulance. Taken to Valley Receiving Hospital, Hunter underwent surgery Monday night and died Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. An autopsy revealed he died of head injuries. Detective Sgt. Jesse A. Tubbs began an investigation of the apparent accident. He was unable to talk immediately to Hunter's third wife, Emily, who was reported under sedation. The actor formerly was married to actresses Barbara Rush, by whom he had a son, and Joan (Dusty) Bartlett, by whom he had two sons. One of Hunter's other important screen roles was that of the nephew of Mayor Skeffington, played by Spencer Tracy, in "The Last Hurrah." His other films included "Call Me Mister," "The Frogmen," "Red Skies of Montana," "Sailor of the King," "Seven Angry Men," "Proud Ones," "Kiss Before Dying," "Hell to "Eternity," "Sergeant Rutledge" and "Brainstorm." During the early 1960s he starred in "Temple Houston, a television series about a frontier lawyer. Hunter was a native of New Orleans, a graduate of Northwestern University and a Navy veteran of World War II. -

AU professor has hand in creating iconic film to be shown at festivals 8/30/11 In 1973, as a undergraduate at Harpur College at Binghamton University, Peer Bode - now a professor of video art in the School of Art & Design at Alfred University -- was among the students who enrolled in a class on collaborative film-making, taught by Nicholas Ray, a legendary director whose credits include Rebel without a Cause, Johnny Guitar, They Live by Night and 55 Days at Peking.As a class, the students collaborated on what turned out to be Ray's last film, We Can't Go Home, "an experimental, multi-narrative film bordering on cinema and visual arts" that is also described as "Ray's posthumous masterpiece."It was an experience that had a profound effect on Bode, as an artist and as a teacher. "Working with cinema auteur Nicholas Ray for two years was remarkable," Bode said. "I was fortunate to have had the opportunity. As a student, I saw a very large project being built up piece by piece. We learned filmmaking, moving image making, by making the film. I experienced being active in camera work, lighting, and editing. Learning was embedded in doing. "I know that discovery has entered into my own teaching. Learning the richness of ideas and the richness of one's medium by engaging in it, is an immersive material making and thinking. The ideas have agency. The materials have agency. This practice is empowering and rewarding. We were making a multi image, multi narrative using 35 mm, 16 mm and 8 mm film and also " video using the Paik-Abe video synthesizer. -

(2) to what extent does motive (reason) to lie infuence ascriptions of trust, mental states, and lying judgments? (3) to what extent are lying judgments consistent with previous ascriptions of communicated content? Follow- ing the Supreme Court’s Bronston judgment, I expect: (1) averaged lying judgments to be similar in casual and courtroom contexts; (2) motive to lie to infuence levels of trust, mental states ascriptions, and patterns of lying judgments; (3) retrospective judgments of lying, after being presented with the state of the world, to be incon- sistent with previous judgments of communicated content: participants hold the protagonist responsible for content she did not communicate. I performed a survey experiment on the Qualtrics platform. Participants were recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk (N = 630). I employed standard Likert scales and forced-choice questions. I found that: (1) average lying judgments are similar in casual and court- room contexts; (2) motive to lie decreases trust ascription and increases lying judg- ment; (3) judgments of lying are inconsistent with previous judgments of communi- cated content: participants hold the protagonist responsible for content they did not communicate (efect size of the diference d = .69). Perjury ascriptions are incon- sistent. The Supreme Court’s worries expressed in the Bronston judgment are well founded. This article helps reforming jury instructions in perjury cases. -

The egocentricity which appears to be indigenous to "show business" is here manifested by the passionate insistence of a well-known motion-picture actress to have her name emblazoned on Broadway not only in the same type of the same size, but also on the same line, as that of her male lead. Such vanity — "the frail estate of human things", a "splendid but destructive egotism", as it has variously been called — doubtless is due in measurable part to the adulation which the public showers on the denizens of the entertainment world in a profusion wholly disproportionate to the instrinsic contribution which they make to the scheme of things when seen in correct perspective. For that matter often in disproportion to any true talent, latent or apparent! Sophia Loren, the world-famed winner of the New York Film Critics' Award as the outstanding motion picture actress of 1961, and a corporation, owning the exclusive right to her services, of which her husband, Carlo Ponti is the president and sole stockholder, as plaintiffs, have brought this action for an injunction against the producer and the distributor of the epic motion picture "El Cid", which opened at the Warner Theatre in this city on December 14, 1961 and is being shown there to capacity houses. -
