Our learning and the depth of understanding of the histories and cultures of all codes has continued, likewise our clarity of the opportunities and challenges facing cycling has sharpened. There were many highlights in 2015 that deserve recognition. Firstly, and of considerable note, this year we welcomed APL Windows Solutions as our new principal partner, with the partnership committed through to 2020. Owned by the Plaw Family, APL are a highly successful Hamilton based organisation started in 1971 which has grown to become “ ...CYCLING IN GENERAL IS GAINING SOME VERY New Zealand’s foremost window supplier, offering a range of residential and commercial window systems. 1st SCHELDEPRIJS 2021 Women Elite - April 7 LORENA WIEBES OPENS THE HONOR ROLL It was an extremely long delivery before the birth of the first Scheldeprijs for women. To avoid conflicts with the Dutch Healthy Aleing Tour the women’s edition was delayed time after time. Until Paris-Roubaix for women was added to the calendar, the Dutch moving their race to early March and thus creating space for the first Ladies Scheldeprijs. The interest to start in Schoten was overwhelming, several teams had to be denied from participating. Finally 28 teams and 152 riders were allowed to start. The route included a long stretch through the Nord Kempen and three local laps in Schoten. In the first hour the ladies covered 42,5 km. The peloton broke into pieces and a few crashes, none serious, eliminated some of the riders. In the local laps Daniek Hengeveld took a 1’20” lead but in the final lap the peloton quickly approached. Also the Italian Letizia Borghesi made an effort to break away from the pack but it all came together and a sprint would need to decide on a winner. It was the fast Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes who became the first female winner of the new Scheldeprijs. • Embodied Experience in the Cognitive Ecologies Of
Embodied Experience in the Cognitive Ecologies of Skilled Performance John Sutton & Kath Bicknell Revised, October 2019 For Ellen Fridland and Carlotta Pavese (eds), The Routledge Handbook of Skill and Expertise . Embodied Experience in the Cognitive Ecologies of Skilled Performance The skilled performance of experts in complex, culturally-significant settings often involves navigating dynamic, unpredictable circumstances. In elite sport, professional athletes deal with weather conditions, unfamiliar locations or deteriorating conditions, equipment and new technologies, fatigue, pain and risk, audience expectations and noise, the constraints of collaboration, the actions of other competitors, and strong personal emotions. We set a new agenda for research on skill and expertise, to focus on the embodied experience of real expert performers in real domains of practice, as they deploy richly embedded strategies in full and challenging ecological settings. Studying experts’ embodied experience, both over time and at a time, requires expanding standard sources for skill theory, to tap not only specialist work in sport psychology, music cognition, and other rich bodies of applied research, but also practitioners’ own fallible but unique self-understandings. We address standard concerns about self-report, surveying related methods from cognitive psychology, sport science, and cognitive ethnography, and home in on apprenticeship methods and work by researcher-practitioners. We conclude with an extended case study of professional cyclist Chloe Hosking’s account of the closing stages of her winning ride in the 2016 La Course by Le Tour de France, at the time the highest profile event in women’s road cycling. Triangulating Hosking’s narrative against other evidence, we identify the multiplicity of diverse cues to which she was responding in on-the-fly decision-making.
