Here we turn right for about 200 yards to reach a permissive path, just below the slopes of Pendle Hill, which takes us to Hookcliffe and Moorside Farm. At the end of the farm track we turn right into West Lane and head towards Worsaw Hill following field paths to Worsaw End House where we climb up and around Warren Hill. We will have lunch here, then descend to the A59 which we cross carefully to arrive in Chatburn. We continue through Chatburn on the main street, cross over the A59, this time by bridge, where we turn left to follow field paths which, surprise, surprise, are very muddy in places, to Smithies Brook. We cross Rimmington Lane and climb a stile on the right in the lane opposite where we have another short climb before dropping down into Downham for refreshments. Once again I have booked the weather. Have a nice day!

Club Holiday 2009 th th 19 to 24 April: Cliff Hotel, Gwbert-on-Sea, Pembrokeshire, Wales The Cliff Hotel, as its name implies, is on a cliff overlooking Cardigan Bay. It has a spa facility with sauna, jacuzzi, steam room and hydro-pool. The hotel also has a nine hole golf course. The cost for this six day holiday is £280 per person in a double or twin, en-suite room. Single rooms are available with a supplement of £5 pppn. The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path is nearby as are other inland footpaths. For members not wishing to walk there are several interesting towns and villages which would be worth visiting. Please contact Dorothy Shackleton to book - £30 deposit required.

In June of this year Redline increased the cost of the two coaches by £100 – now £600. We have no option but to increase our coach fares to £9 for adults and £4.50 for children as from the October coach to Llangollen. We hope you unders tand the reason for this.

In coaches with seat belts fitted, passengers aged 14 years and above MUST use them. Dogs must be kept on the lead at all times. The coaches are non-smoking areas.

Across the Howgills via and the Calf with Dave Colbert Grade A Distance 11 miles / 17km Climbing 3450ft / 1050m . Situated between the rugged mountains of the to the west and the rolling expanse of the to the east, the form a compact group of steep-sided, rounded hills. The highest summits lie towards the centre of an extensive upland plateau from which ridges radiate in all directions. Those running to the north are quite lengthy and enclose the deep-cut valley of Bowderdale. This linear walk traverses the Howgills from north to south, initially along one of the most distinctive of these northern ridges which culminates in Yarlside. We start from Wath on the A685 just west of Newbiggin-on-Lune and climb the long ridge of Hooksey, although any hooksey on this walk is strictly verboten! We then hop over Randygill Top (2047ft / 624m - Who named these hills?!) to Kensgriff before the steep climb (ladders required) to Yarlside (2096ft / 639m). Following a plunge into Bowderdale, a gradual climb takes us to The Calf (2219ft / 676m), the highest summit in the Howgills, from where we head to Sedbergh by way of Calders (the 70/- hill) and Arant Haw. Winder is optional but is less than an extra 100ft / 30m of ascent to get a bird’s eye view of Sedbergh.

Cautley Spout withVal Walmsley Grade B+ Distance 11miles / 17km Climbing 2000ft / 700m

We set off from Sedbergh and, following the course of the river Rawthey, pass by Ellerthwaite, Thursgill, Fawcett Bank and various waterfalls to reach a path below Fawcett Bank Ridge and Cautley. We continue to Cautley Beck where a footbridge leads to a gradually steepening climb up Cautley Holme Beck to . A path takes us down Swere Gill to join a route up to The Calf and on to Calders, Rowantree Grains Fold and Winder. From here we drop down to Howgill Lane and back into Sedbergh.

Winder and the River Rawthey with Dorothy Dobson Grade B Distance 9 miles / 14.5km Climbing1542ft / 470m

Winder and the River Rawthey can only be described as a walk of contrasts, combining beautiful hilltop views with the peaceful pastoral scenes of two river valleys. Taking a path out of Sedbergh we come, after about half a mile, to Lock Bank Farm. We then start to climb Winder, one of the Howgills. This is a steady climb and, although we don’t quite reach the summit, we enjoy stunning views over Sedbergh and the River Rawthey. Now taking a westward path we descend to Howgill Lane and have a short walk to reach Height of Winder Farm. We cross over Slacks Lane, make our way down to the River Lune and join the Dales Way. Crossing over Lincoln’s Inn Bridge we soon reach the hamlet of High Oaks where we join the River Rawthey. The river meanders through woodland for about two miles before we reach our footpath back into Sedbergh.

Sedbergh Circular Saunter with Derek Lowe Grade C Distance 6 miles / 9.7km Climbing 500ft / 152m

Setting off from the coach park we make our way along field paths to the River Rawthey which we follow to Birks. We then make our way through Sedbergh School grounds to reach the cattle market. Our main climb of the day commences, reaching Lochbank Farm and then gradually to Canada Wood and Settlebeck Gill where we shall have lunch. After lunch we descend to Castlehaw to look at the Motte and Bailey before continuing to Underbank, Stonehall and Hollin Hill. We descend to Straight Bridge and follow the River Rawthey back to Sedbergh for well earned refreshments and the coaches. I have booked the weather. Have a nice day!
