Andrija Andjelic Music Ministry St. Irenaeus & St. Joseph Parishes

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, make a liturgical distinction, the liturgical colors change to Today we find ourselves halfway through the rose color, and the music restrictions are lifted to reflect the Advent season, joyfully awaiting the Lord’s coming. As we joyful nature of the celebration. The word Gaudete comes make our journey through this season, we notice a twofold from the text of the Introit, or the Entrance Antiphon, named character when it comes to readings and music: Advent 1 “Gaudete in Domino” which translates to Rejoice in the and Advent 2. Advent 1 focuses on the First Coming of the Lord. Gaudete Sunday also marks the beginning of the Son of God, while Advent 2 focuses on the Second second part of Advent which makes it suitable to use one of Coming, which counterintuitively comes to us first during the most popular Advent hymns – O Come, O Come, the first two weeks of Advent. For this reason, during the Emmanuel. Notice the word “Rejoice!” in the refrain! first two weeks, we encounter anthems about the Second Coming such as Lo! He Comes With Clouds Descending Sacrosanctum Concilium, a II Vatican Council among others. A more solemn and somber music is document, reminds us that the Mother Church desires our prevalent to help give us a reminder of the end of the world full, conscious, and active participation in the liturgical and our destiny, but also remind us of the hope and celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the promise of a new baptism in “the Holy Spirit and fire” in our Liturgy. It is a primary and indispensable source from which Lord who will come at the end of time to gather his we are to derive the true Christian spirit. So, rejoice in the people. Lord, and sing with a full heart and voice, today, and always! Organ music in Advent should be used in moderation to reflect the character of the season but also Ad Jesum per Mariam, not anticipate the full joy of Christmas itself. You will notice Andrija the lack of reeds, trumpets, or mixtures that add brilliance and joy to the organ sound, or more subdued playing if piano is used. The effect of the full organ sound is then In todays’ liturgy, we hear the amplified at Christmas when it returns after being absent for prophet Isaiah tell us, ”Be strong, four weeks. Hint: this is where we get the phrase “pulling all fear not!” We know that change the stops” from! You also may notice the silence before isn’t easy, that leaving the past behind is difficult, and that no on and after Mass. This is because solo instrumental music is knows what will happen in the future. But we are a pilgrim people of not permitted during the seasons of Advent and Lent, as God, a people filled with hope who are confident that with Jesus as well as during the Sacred Triduum (after the Gloria on Holy our head and the Holy Spirit as our guide we will become a united Thursday until the Gloria at Easter Vigil), and in the Offices parish community. Our mission this Advent and always is to be a and Masses of the Dead. However, given the different parish community that effectively proclaims Jesus’ Gospel of diving mercy and truly witnesses to it by our lives. Let us continue to pray nature of the seasons, one can make an argument to justify for our parish clergy team, our parish staff, and our leadership somber solo music during Advent (but not Lent) that reflects councils, that they will fearlessly lead u to be disciples of our coming the joyful anticipation of our Lord. Savior. His coming means our joy and gladness, our hope for the future. As we look at today’s first and second reading, we notice a theme of joy and rejoicing. This is what makes the Third Sunday of Advent or Gaudete Sunday special. To

13 THE PARISH MERGE – NAMING THE NEW PARISH PROCESS

The process to this point: All parishioners in all five parishes were invited to submit names with a rationale for that name. There were almost 200 submissions of names, resulting in 92 distinct names. With sixteen parishes merging on July 1, 2020, the Diocese asked us to increase the number of submissions we first make from 10 to 15. There are 6 parishes merging in January, 2020, so we added a few more in case some of those are duplicates with our selections and then no longer permitted. To get the top 20 names, the Pastoral Council members (not priests) voted for their top five each. Names receiving more than 4 votes resulted in the top 16 names. Four more names were voted in by the Pastoral Council members in case there are names removed with the January parish mergers.

Pastoral Council final selection and rationale St. Michael – One of the three archangels mentioned in scripture.. Leader of Angels and God’s army against evil, champion of all Christians and the Church. All the parishes are united in praying the St. Michael prayer. Holy Family –Three of our five parishes are directly family relations and all of us are becoming 1 family with the Holy Family. Ave Maria – It’s a beautiful tribute to honor the Blessed Mother with this prayer and song that Catholics love and hold dear. St. John Paul II – He was a beloved contemporary of our time, the first polish pope. St. Gabriel – One of the three archangels mentioned in scripture, spoke to Mary, Joseph and Zechariah. Mary, Queen of Peace – We need our lady’s guidance to bring peace to our world, peace to our parish and to our families. Most Holy Trinity – The three areas of Oakmont, Plum and Verona can celebrate the Trinity of God’s persons. Mother of Perpetual Help – to be blessed with the everlasting help of our mother. St. Andrew – Apostle and martyr who was a disciple of John the Baptist before Jesus. St. Thomas Aquinas Connects our Catholic schools with this scholar, named after a doubter of the faith, who reasoned much of the teaching of the Church today. Most Holy Name - “In the Mass and in Eucharistic Adoration we meet the merciful love of God that passes through the Heart of Jesus Christ.” (St. Pope John Paul II). Holy Angels – Supernatural beings who offer us guidance and help in our journey to God. St. Faustina – We need her example and message from God of Divine Mercy. St. Jude (Thaddeus) – Apostle and giver of joy, patron of impossible causes. St. Maximillian Kolbe – Polish Franciscan friar who died in place of a stranger in the Auschwitz death camp. Saints Joachim & Anne – Married couple childless for many years. The Holy Spirit heard their prayer and Anne gave birth to our Blessed Mother Mary.

Saints Louis and Zelie – First married couple canonized, parents of five nuns, including St. Therese, patrons of the domestic church; whose mission is to hand down the faith among generations. May their example of love inspire us as a parish family and as individuals in our own unique vocations. Christ the King– A church named after the one king whom we should revere and call our king over all others. Always a Sunday feast day. Corpus Christi – a good reminder that we are all part of the Body of Christ. Always a Sunday feast day. Mary, Mother of God - Sacred truth recognized by St. Irenaeus, a church teaching and prayer.
