, The census enumeration was carried out in full according to plan but the Government ot India decided to restrict the tabulation for British India. Consequently the tableEl in this volume cover less than half the contemp1ated range and offer in effect only the distribution of the popula tion by community and by province or state; disttict, tehsil and town. Opportunity has been taken however to sQrt wherever possible the 1/50 random sample taken in every area. 2. The slips in which the remaining unsorted information is to be found are stored in each province ag;:tinst a possible reopening of tabulation in happier circumstances. , CONTENTS

I I. Distrfct areas shown in column 2 of this table are~those of latest determinations of the Survey of India. Changes from those of 1931 are due to boundary revisions, resurvey or revised calc~lations. 2. Towns are places of usually not less than 5,000 inhabitants possessing, definite urban characteristics and include (i) every municipality-or notified area ()ommittee (ii) every cantonment.

Co Village" means revenue estates as defined in the Puqja,h Land RevElnue Act, Section '3 (i). " House ,. means the dweHing place of a family which cook and eat together as one unit together with its resident dependents such as widows and servants. , 3. The.:distribu.tion of the population of the administered districts by tehsils will be found in Provincial Tables I and II. 4, A few places with less than 5,000 inhabitants have been treated as towns. The urban population when the 5,000 limit is applied is 546,494 and the urban/rural ratio 1 : 5. , 5. This census has seen the extension of enumeration in the transborder'.areas. In the past only the population of the British posts was enumerated. At this census enumerat~on covere~ the whole of and Ch~tral States, two of the eight tehsils of State, the whole of the Malakand protected area and Kurram Tehsil in tbe, Kurram Agency. For these area.s th.e all-In.iia standard questionnaire was not applied. but only the follOWIng six simple questions :- (1) Name ('2) Age (3) Sex (4) Tribe (5) Civii ~ondition (6) Means of livelihood A special pad was designed by the Census Commissioner for this enume:r:ation.and printed at the Delhi Press. The report and the tables for this enumeration are printed as an ~ppendix to this-volume. The enumerated populations in the·transborder areas are shown separately in this table.
