4 Oregon Track Club Masters AUGUST 2015 David Elliott Sr. Sets Butte To Butte Age Record Trisha Kluge interviews David Elliott Sr: Butte To Butte M70 course record Registering for the Butte to Butte this year was a “last-min- ute decision”and David Elliot Sr. was pleasantly surprised with his result. He topped the field in the Men’s 70-74 age group with an impressive 45:11 finish in the popular but notoriously hilly 10 km run, for a 7:17 pace per mile. The previous best time for men 70-74 was 46:11 — he beat that by a full minute, setting a new age-group record for the Butte to Butte.

Native of Cottage Grove Born in Cottage Grove, David Elliott lived his whole life in Or- egon with the exception of being drafted into the Vietnam War from 1965-1967. He was ninth in a family of ten children.

30 Years of Motocross and Archery The only track events he had participated in were high jump and 400 meters in 7th grade. He got into motocross dirt bike racing and, along with some archery, was competitive for 30 years. Working the front line in a lumber yard eventually took its toll on his shoulder, so he had to give up those hobbies.

Distance Running, Speed Work, Coaching Needing an outlet for that energy, he took up distance run- ning, and regularly ran 10k races and Half-Marathons. A few years ago, he started regular speed work with the Thursday night Flyers and Jeff Sather’s Tuesday night OTCM workout. About a year ago, he hired Cathie Twomey-Bellamy, and is finding new levels of what he can do with her attentive coaching, guidance and support. He currently runs about 18-32 miles per week, with a few light weight sessions for upper body Dave Elliott Sr. en-route to new age-group course record (45:11) this year’s strength. Butte to Butte. National, International Ranking Dave is currently ranked nationally and internationally in the 1500 meters, mile, 3000 and 5k on the track. Editor’s note: Look in the next issue for a full report on this year’s Butte to Butte.

5 OnTrack AUGUST 2015 OTC Elite Reach Out with Summer Campaigns Members of OTC Elite have been busy competing and represent- ing the club throughout North America and Europe with their sum- mer campaigns. Elijah Greer (pictured here) took time out of his schedule to speak to a massive crowd of youth outside the London Olympic Stadium. He was part of a group that was supporting Go Run For Fun, an organization that gets thousands of kids outside and run- ning by teaching them the importance of exercise. Among the highlights this summer were a gold medal from An- drew Wheating in the 1500 at the Pan Am Games in Toronto. Bri- anne Theisen-Eaton helped the Canadian women’s 4x400 to third at the Pan Am Games. Keep on the lookout for other OTC Elite athletes as they wind up their European campaigns and compete at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing from August 22 to 30. Among the OTC Elite athletes to qualify for the World Championships are Ashton Eaton, Brianne Theisen-Eaton, Jesse Williams, Mohammed Aman, Aisha Praught, Sally Kipyego, Hassan Mead, Lauren Johnson and Tom Farrell.

Randy Hledik (right) and his wife, Kathie, ran the Indy 500 Festival Mini (Half) Marathon on Satur- day, May 2, in Indianapolis, Ind. Randy reports that getting to take a lap around the Brick Yard oval was almost as much fun as running at Hayward Field. Frank Shorter won the first race held 39 years ago, and he was featured at this year’s events. Randy and Kathie ran into Shorter as they flew from Denver to Indianapolis and again at the Expo.
