(1979) Directed by; Dr. Robert 0. Stephens. Pp. 255 Contrary to much modern opinion, the American Puritans, in the words of Edward Taylor, expected their doctrine to yield "United Essential harmony." This study is an attempt to find the harmony of which Taylor spoke in terms of some of his more prominent metaphors. An exploration into Taylor's figures appears appropriate, since he himself claimed the "Metaphoricall" mode of Scripture as his own "truth Speaking form." The five chief figures to be examined here are called in this study the hygienic, the erotic, the organic, the domestic and the forensic. The first four can be found more definitely in Taylor's Preparatory Meditations and Taylor's occasional poetry, and the last in Taylor's long poem, Gods Determinations. Taylor's "hygienic" figures are an exposition of New England preparationism, which required man to admit his sinful condition in terms of disease and degradation. The purposes of such description, however, were not ultimately to denigrate man but to set forth God's grace as correspondingly great and to show how, by his confession, man could assist the Lord in the preparation of the grounds of his own salvation. As man showed great deficiency in the hygienic mode, in the terms of the divine romance of redemption, the Soul appeared similarly unequal to the seeking heavenly Lover. By Taylor's Puritan interpreta­ tion of conversion, however, the Soul possessed "inherent" qualities that made her attractive to her Lord and worthy of his rescue. Furthermore, as the Lord displayed his love for her, he also "raised" every faculty and capacity of her nature so that she became a suitable Bride for him. The divine-human union signified by the Marriage of the Lamb in conversion was expected to yield fruit "answerable" to the grace of God. This could be accomplished when the Christian joined the Almighty in an invisible and eternal Covenant which Taylor and other Puritans often described in terms of a great living plant. The parts of this organism were so inextricably bound together that, once fused, they could never be separated. The members, whether Head, branches or fruit, "fed" each other in endlessly reciprocal relations. Not only was the Covenant an external and invisible relation, but it was also for Edward Taylor and other New England believers an open and visible way of life. The Supper of the Lord as celebrated by Taylor manifested the dignity and significance of the temporal and human existence of the Christian by the very common and ordinary symbols of the table, the garment and the counterpane. In the cosmos of Taylor's Gods Determinations, the poet showed in dramatic detail how order first was established on the heavenly plane before it moved to earth. Such apparently opposite qualities of the Divine Nature as God's Justice and his mercy actually became "friends" in order to bring about the salvation of fallen man. Elect man, however, was not to be removed immediately from the earth but must achieve harmony within his own life while still remaining in an imper­ fect world. The best way of doing so, the Christian learned, was to enter a coach provided for him by the Lord. This divine vehicle was the visible church, the local manifestation of God's kingdom on earth. The wise Christian who entered it could be "coacht" along, gradually improving his praise to the Lord while traveling an equable "middle way" between the earth and glory. Taylor held forth these ideals of glory until the very end of his life. His last valedictory verses affirmed once more the per­ fect equipoise of God's nature and prophesied a final harmony for those of his persuasion, those who clung to the New England Way of seventeenth-century Puritanism. Harris Anyone who wishes to understand early town government and town meetings in Massachusetts needs to know about the form of church government that the early Puritan settlers described as, “One, Immutable, and Prescribed in the Word of God.” (1) The authority for their chosen form of Ecclesiastical organization was the Bible, and the Puritans set forth in the Cambridge Platform of 1648 that “the parts of church-government are all of them exactly described” there. Here was a sharp division between Puritan and Anglican, for the Puritan could not find in the book of Acts or the letters of Paul any reason to justify a hierarchal system of bishops, or cardinals, or popes. The Puritan structure of organization has typically been described as congregational polity, because the congregations were intended to be a reflection of the primitive Christian churches which were small cells of independent believers. (2) By 1648 nearly thirty years had passed since the first settlers had arrived in Plymouth. The Westminster Confession, a theological platform, had arrived in the colonies from England, and by and large, there was agreement among the Puritans in matters of faith. Fifty churches had been gathered in the four colonies - Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay, New Haven and Hartford. The Synod in Cambridge, which held its first session in 1646, was called by the General Court to formally structure the polity of the New England churches. Some of the English authorities had hoped to Presbyterianize the congregations, and while the theological agreement made it a fortuitous time to regularize church polity in the New World, the Puritans had no desire to capitulate to a system that did not, in their view, conform to texts from scripture.

Strange JONATHAN EDWARDS CAME to Northampton, Massachusetts in 1727 to serve as assistant pastor to his renowned maternal grandfather, Solomon Stoddard. He and his grandfather agreed on most things, including what it meant to be a true Christian. Stoddard taught that a saving work of the Holy Spirit was necessary for one to be a true Christian and to be admitted to heaven.1 Edwards agreed with this and taught the same throughout his life.2 Stoddard also taught that whether or not someone had experienced such a saving work of the Holy Spirit was not necessarily discernable by others. Because the saving work of the Holy Spirit remained ultimately undetectable, Stoddard taught that anyone who agreed with the doctrines of Christianity and was moral in life could partake of Holy Communion, whether they professed such a saving work or not.3 Edwards came to disagree with this and argued that 1Many examples of this from Stoddard’s preaching and writing might be adduced. PROTESTANTS READING CATHOLICISM: CRASHAW’S REFORMED READERSHIP by ANDREW D. DAVIS Under the direction of Dr. Paul Voss ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to realign Richard Crashaw’s aesthetic orientation with a broadly conceptualized genre of seventeenth-century devotional, or meditative, poetry. This realignment clarifies Crashaw’s worth as a poet within the Renaissance canon and helps to dismantle historicist and New Historicist readings that characterize him as a literary anomaly. The methodology consists of an expanded definition of meditative poetry, based primarily on Louis Martz’s original interpretation, followed by a series of close readings executed to show continuity between Crashaw and his contemporaries, not discordance. The thesis concludes by expanding the genre of seventeenth-century devotional poetry to include Edward Taylor, who despite his Puritanism, also exemplifies many of the same generic attributes as Crashaw.     Note Cards 1. Mayflower Compact 1620 - The first agreement for self-government in America. It was signed by the 41 men on the Mayflower and set up a government for the Plymouth colony. 2. William Bradford A Pilgrim, the second governor of the Plymouth colony, 1621-1657. He developed private land ownership and helped colonists get out of debt. He helped the colony survive droughts, crop failures, and Indian attacks. 3. Pilgrims and Puritans contrasted The Pilgrims were separatists who believed that the Church of England could not be reformed. Separatist groups were illegal in England, so the Pilgrims fled to America and settled in Plymouth. The Puritans were non-separatists who wished to adopt reforms to purify the Church of England. They received a right to settle in the Massachusetts Bay area from the King of England. 4. Massachusetts Bay Colony 1629 - King Charles gave the Puritans a right to settle and govern a colony in the Massachusetts Bay area. The colony established political freedom and a representative government. 5. Cambridge Agreement 1629 - The Puritan stockholders of the Massachusetts Bay Company agreed to emigrate to New England on the condition that they would have control of the government of the colony. 6. Puritan migration Many Puritans emigrated from England to America in the 1630s and 1640s. During this time, the population of the Massachusetts Bay colony grew to ten times its earlier population. 7. Church of England (Anglican Church) The national church of England, founded by King Henry VIII. It included both Roman Catholic and Protestant ideas. 8. John Winthrop (1588-1649), his beliefs 1629 - He became the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony, and served in that capacity from 1630 through 1649.

    New England Church ' Relations^ and Continuity in Early Congregational History BY RAYMOND PIIINEAS STEARNS AND DAVID HOLMKS BRAWNER N HIS ground-breaking study of early Engiish dissenters, I ChampHn Barrage announced a half-century ago that the "beginnings of Independency or Congregationalism, are not, as heretofore, traced to the Brownists or Barrowists, but to the Congregational Puritanism advocated by Henry Jacob and William Bradshaw about 1604 and 1605, and later put in practice by various Puritan congregations on the Continent, when it was brought to America and back into England."^ This evolutionary scheme, as developed and substantiated in later studies, has by now acquired considerable authority. The late Perry Miller's Orthodoxy in Aíassachiíseits was ''a development of the hints" received from Burrage and others; Charles M. Some argue that he supported a church structure based on suppression of lay rights in favor of the clergy, strengthening of synods above the authority of congregations, and increasingly narrow church membership requirements. By contrast, others arrive at virtually opposite conclusions. This thesis evaluates Cotton's correspondence and pamphlets through the lense of moderation to trace the evolution of Cotton's thought on these ecclesiological issues during his ministry in England and Massachusetts. Moderation is discussed in terms of compromise and the abatement of severity in the context of ecclesiastical toleration, the balance between lay and clerical power, and the extent of congregational and synodal authority.

Luther declared the Bible alone was the source of God's word. 2. Faith alone would determine salvation; he denounced the authority of the pope. 3. The Reformation came to dominate European politics well into the next century. B. John Calvin elaborated on Luther's ideas and founded Calvinism in his Institutes of the Christian Religion (1536) 1. God was all powerful and all-good. 2. Humans, due to original sin, were weak and wicked. 3. Predestination a. God was all-knowing and knew beforehand who was going to heaven or hell.
