I saw an interview with Aidan, Eleanor, Debbie Horsfield and Ed Bazalgette and the one thing they all said was, if the series leads people to discover the wonderful novels of Winston Graham then it was a success. Ross, who takes a dark view of the nature of man, realizes a truth about himself, that his character is fundamentally pessimistic. The other issue may lie in the fact that, as the book series goes on, Ross is no longer the main character, with his kids taking over more as he ages.
