President’s Message Don Danko November 2013

In just a few weeks, our 19th Ohio Cichlid Association Extravaganza will be held at the Strongsville Holiday Inn. Fish enthusiasts from all over the planet will be joining us November 22 to 24 to celebrate our love of Cichlids and Catfish – and to drink a few beers and tell stories as well! If you haven’t already made plans to attend, it’s not too late. You can register online at www.ohiocichlid.com or fill out a registration sheet at the November 1st social meeting. For those that have never attended an Extravaganza, we will set up shop at the Holiday from Friday through Sunday and have lots of activities to keep you engaged. We have world class Cichlid and Catfish speakers, a dry goods auction, large fish auction, a swap meet, hospitality suite, fish show, manufacturers’ booths, display tanks, awards pizza party and more.

Additionally, attendees will be bringing fish of all types that will be offered in the hotel rooms. So, come on out and have a great time! It’s very, very affordable and fun for the whole family. We’re still in need of volunteers to help with various Extravaganza activities, such as helping run the Hospitality Suite, checking in fish for the auction, running bags at the auctions and helping set up the Fish Show tanks. Please consider volunteering at the Nov. 1 meeting or reach out to a board member before the Extravaganza.

Thanks to Eric Bodrock for his energy packed talk on Catfish in October. I heard from a few people that they planned to set up some Corydoras tanks as a direct result of listening to the presentation! Great job, Eric!

At the November meeting, we’ll be featuring a Swap Meet, so bring a few items to sell from the tables. We’ll also be having our normal activities of BAP/Buck a Bag auction, Bowl Show, Raffle, BAP awards, etc. As mentioned above, please sign up to volunteer for helping at the Extravaganza.

That’s all for now. See you at the Old Oak Bible Church on Friday, Nov. 1, at 8 pm.

Best regards,

Don

Editor’s Message Jon “Jombie” Dietrich November 2013

Hey OCA friends!

I’ve been counting the days since the last event and that number is finally within a reasonable distance. I can almost hear the show room bubbling, providing air to hundreds of the most beautiful fish from our homes. The Extravaganza is such a special time for our club. It’s a time to bring all of our Cichlid friends together from all over the globe to share and learn from each other. We can let loose for one weekend in the name of our hobby. I wish everyone the best weekend filled with laughter, education, and relaxation. Make it a point to meet a new friend, learn a new trick, and bring home a new species. Safe travels this year. See you there.

Take care,

Jombie

Program Preview from Lew Carbone November 2013

This month our speaker will be…

… Gotcha!

No speaker this meeting, but get your wallets ready!

Pre-Extravaganza Swap Meet

Instead of a speaker this month, the OCA will be hosting our annual Pre-Extravaganza Swap Meeting. This gives OCA members a chance to purchase each other’s fish and dry goods before they’re advertised to the general Extravaganza crowd, often at better prices than they’ll be at the big event.

While the nominal attraction of the monthly club meeting is the guest speaker, we also suspect that the chance to visit your friends that are also fellow hobbyists, but whom you seldom see any other time, may be just as important. This is born out by the success of past Swap Meetings. The participants obviously enjoyed the extra socializing time, freed up by not having a speaker.

That doesn’t mean that the Swap Meetings are completely unstructured, however. There will still be the Bowl Show, the BAP and Buck-a-Bag Auction, and the Raffle. This is all held together by the hosting expertise of our president.

If you’ve never attended a Swap Meeting before, here’s what to expect: When you walk in, you will not see the usual rows of chairs facing a screen. Instead, tables will be set up around the room. (Plenty of chairs will still be available.) On these tables, members will have bags of fish, plants, dry goods and equipment on display and for sale. Anything that is legal to sell (and unregulated) in the state of Ohio is OK. Attendees can stroll around, look at the offerings and ask questions. Being able to talk to the sellers is a great feature of swap meets in general, because you can find out the needs and history of any fish you’re thinking of buying.

Tables are free to members. If you don’t need a whole table, it’s a good idea to share a table with someone else. That way you can walk around checking on the offerings of other sellers while your table-mate watches your stuff, and vice-versa.

If a non-member would like to sell, tables are $15. This, not coincidentally, is the cost of membership, so anyone who joins on the spot can get a table. Admission as a buyer is free and open to anyone.

I hope to see you there!

Pretty bold statement there huh? It might seem bold to you but in fact it’s the truth. I’ll explain in a sec, but first I’d like to ask you a question. Are you the person who keeps a species of fish just long enough to see it breed and then boom!...it’s gone? Or are you the person who likes to keep fish for the long run? I only ask because, while it doesn’t matter to me what style of fish keeping you enjoy, you will find some great benefits from these Omega One foods.

First let me apologize to the nice folks at Omega One who sent this food to me for review. I’ve horded this food for a long time and had it hidden in my freezer like a prime cut of filet mignon that’s being saved for a special occasion. Omega One is not only a good supporter of the Ohio Cichlid Associations Extravaganza, but they’ve also been my “go to” food for many years. I’ve wanted to get this article to all of you sooner, (because this food is really incredible), but unfortunately some “life issues” have prevented me from writing this review until now. Many apologies and I hope this review was worth the wait! Usually, I explain all of the features of a fish food and then tell you why you need it. I’ll tell you more specifics about this food shortly. This time however, I’d like to start with why you need this food and then give you the 411 about all of the ingredients, formulas, etc. I think that I might be able to change your mind about how you feed your fish. While there are a couple of secret weapons that fish keepers and fish breeders use for maximum benefit and maximum results, it is still a consistent truth that you need a varied diet. Some use live food, frozen food, or a combination of both to vary the diet of their fish. Read any book or article about how best to keep fish and you’ll find these types of foods mentioned frequently. If you read “Gear and Gadgets” consistently, you’ve seen me review flake foods, pellet foods, powders, and stick foods. What I’ve not mentioned until now is that of the foods I’ve reviewed, including some pretty cool dry foods from Omega One, not a single type of food should be used as a stand-alone diet. The secret weapon that great aquarists use is a fish feeding system, often referred to as a diet. I like the term “system” because it evokes more of a technical approach rather than an evocation of the classic food pyramid….and who knows what a fish’s food pyramid would look like anyway….but ahhh…I digress. So, you….the guy who wants to spawn a 12” fish at 3”, then turn it in for your Breeder Award Points in your local fish club. Why would you need a fish feeding system? Simple. If you want to shorten your turn around time, you need to pump your fish up with some serious nutrition. This doesn’t mean handfuls of flake food twice per day, or trying to put excess weight on your fish, (which is something that will actually impede the breeding process-just ask me).

You don’t want obese fish. If you are looking for an early breed to get quick turnaround on your fish, they need to have a diet that is rich, not overly heavy on fats, but has all of the components of a variety of food sources. Those who use flake, frozen, pellets, stick, wafers, canned, and even live food to create this varied diet will always have faster spawns and greater sized spawns of healthy fry. As a part of this system, Omega can help you succeed in the fish room as they offer flake food and pellet food as well as the frozen food I will introduce you to today. If you are the person who likes to buy fry, raise them to full sized adults and then spawn them, I think that it’s pretty clear what a varied diet will do for you. In my fish room I’ve grown fish from 1’ to over 12” and am known to keep fish for over 3 yrs at a time. What I’ve learned is that as fish get larger and older, nutritional deficits become a big deal. While they may seem to be plump and healthy, they tend to get ill frequently, are lethargic, and will not spawn. Water quality has a great effect on a fish’s health, but its diet is just as important. I’ve found that if you provide a varied diet, not only will your fish be healthier, but the colors they exhibit will also be brighter. Not of this information is particularly groundbreaking, but it’s important to know that no matter how you enjoy keeping fish, the dietary considerations remain the same if you want to maximize your results.

Omega One’s philosophy is if you start with really high quality raw materials, the quality of your product will be as high as possible. They buy the same fresh fish that is caught for us humans to eat directly from the commercial fishermen around Baranof Island, Alaska. At right are of couple of pics of the types of fish that are typical for the area. The Omega Sea boat at top is not only used to transport fish, but it’s also used when harvesting kep. Omega one harvests their own kelp by hand and I’ve included an image of them harvesting kelp below. Obviously these “hands-on” methods allow Omega One to control the quality of their raw materials. They also keep the quality high by storing these raw materials in a USDA approved facility until they are processed into the final product. What is really cool about Omega One, is that they’ve developed a process that “marries” the raw materials to the vitamin additives so that they don’t separate during processing or during use by you. This means that more of the nutrirents that you feed your fish are actually getting into the fish and not simply leaching out in to the water in your aquarium. Omega One offers a variety of fish foods from Falke, freeze dried, pellet, and frozen foods for cichlids, marine fish, and even foods for your veggie lovers. Their line is too extensive for me to do a sufficient job of covering here, so I’ll include a link to all of their products where you can learn about every one of them, plus see the ingredients as well as guranteed analysis of the food. http://omegasea.net/products.html

The first of three frozen foods I tested was of course the Cichlid Formula. This foo d is perfect in many respects because it contains Salmon, shrimp, Kelp, Halibut, Cod, Spirulina, and many more whole ingredients. It also contains vitamins A & D along with Omega 3 & 6, just to name a few. Protein is pretty high at 9%, Crude Fat is 3.5% and Fiber is 2%. In my fish room, I fed this primarily to species that are omnivorous and outright carnivores due to the high protein and low fiber. Even meat eaters need the Kelp and Spirulina in their diets so it is very cool that Omega One chooses to include these in this food. Most fish are grazers which is how they get their fiber and fulfill the vegetable portion of their diets. This food includes many ingredients that mimic the natural diet of grazers and it’s worth trying just to add this into the mix in your fish room. I love that Omega One gives you 70 cubes for your money, and the smaller cubes make it easier to feed varying sizes of populations within your aquaria. Less waste equals more value.

I keep a variety of fish in my fish room and I’ll admit that while cichlids still own my heart, I still love to keep tetras, barbs, and other freshwater staples. This food is perfect for Plecostomus, Angelfish, Silver Dollars, Goldfish, Rafaels, Loaches, Botias, Gouramis, all Freshwater Shrimp and Crayfish, and many other Freshwater Species. Protein is 8%, Fat 3.5%, and Fiber 3%. As in the Cichlid Formula, there is a plethora of wholesome ingredients and a litany of vitamins. Protein via fresh fish and shrimp will keep your veggie eaters in prime shape and you’ll find that your fish will vigorously attack these cubes when they are introduced into your favorite tank.

I don’t keep Discus, but I will someday, and when I do, they’ll be eating Omega One’s Discus Color Formula. With 12% Protein, 4% Fat, 1.5% Fiber and 15 vitamins, this food is loaded. The usual fresh ingredients are all in this food and it will make picky eaters saddle up to the trough in record time. I fed this to the pickiest eaters in my fish room and none of them rejected it even though it was an entirely new food to them. One taste is all it took and then we were off to the races. Again the 70 cube container proved to be a good thing as I was able to spread this food out over a long period of time. For smaller populations, I even cut some cubes in half so as to not overfeed. Try this on your Discus and see if they don’t tear into this Omega One Discus Formula.

Okay. You’ve heard all about how good this food is received by my fish and have learned all about how Omega One uses the freshest raw materials. It’s obvious that these are all premium quality fish foods and that they are a good value due to the 70 cubes you get per box. When you are thinking premium, you don’t always think value at the same time. Usually these two concepts do not run hand in hand. So how much is this super food going to set you back? Less than $4. That’s right. I found this Premium quality food with tons of vitamins on the net for under four bucks. This is truly one example of quality and value running hand in hand. The next time you are in your local fish store, ask for these formulas and all of the Omega One foods by name. If they don’t already carry them, ask them to bring some in for you. Part of the fun of the hobby is trying new things and being surprised by the results. These Omega One Formulas allow you to try out some incredibly high quality food without breaking the budget. I know you’ll be as pleased as I was with the results.

This Month in OCA History by Lew Carbone

1988: At this month’s social meeting, Don and Marilyn Danko turn in Cichlasoma ellioti for BAP. It has been recognized as a first US spawn. Don caught the parents while collecting near Vera Cruz, in Mexico. This species is now usually referred to as Thorichthys maculipinnis.

1996: The second Extravaganza, featuring speakers Paul Loiselle, Wayne Leibel, Juan Miguel Artigas-Asaz, Laif DeMason and Patrick de Rahm, proved that the success of the 1995 Extravaganza was not a fluke. Ron Georgeone won Best of Show with his “Geophagus altifrons” Photos from the 1996 Extravaganza appear on the next few pages.)

2002: This Year’s Extravaganza set records in both attendance, with 260 registered, and show entries, with 262. The speakers were Paul Loiselle, Ingo Seidel, Rusty Wessel, Ranier Stawikowski and Dr. Jay Stauffer. Ron Geogeone again won Best of Show, this time with his “Pin Stripe Damba” (Paretroplus menarambo). The 2002 show still holds the record for the number of entries. The 2012 Extravaganza set a new record for registered attendees, at 302.

What will they say about November 2013? Fish bring us together. Make friends. Make memories.

Ad Konings World Class Speaker Extravaganza 2013

Ad Konings, born and raised in the , started keeping cichlids at age 14. While he wanted to be an ichthyologist, he felt his economic future would be more secure if he studied medical biology. As a young adult, he did human DNA research in and .

In 1980, Ad worked part time for Dirk Verduijn, the top tropical fish importer in the Netherlands. The wealth of rare African cichlids available to him at this time greatly increased his fascination with these animals, especially after taking a trip with Verduijn to Malawi to visit Stuart Grant’s collecting and exporting operation. He has traveled there many times since.

He moved to in 1986, and around this time, began working with veteran ichthyologist Ethlwyn Trewavas. As his knowledge grew, he began writing books about cichlids. In 1991, he started his own publishing company, Cichlid Press. He got married in 1996 and the couple moved to sunny El Paso, Texas, taking Cichlid Press with them. The publishing company grew rapidly, and he now publishes books by other fish experts, besides his own. In addition, he writes and publishes books about his second passion, cacti.

Today, Ad continues to travel several times a year to study and photograph cichlids and their habitats, and remains active in cichlid research, often working with Dr. Jay Stauffer of Penn State. He shares his knowledge not only by writing books and articles, but also by maintaining a busy speaking schedule. He has over 20 talks about cichlids he can give, along with 13 about cacti. He has appeared at events in at least 24 countries.

Ad Konings is a long-time friend of the OCA. He was the main attraction of the first Extravaganza, in 1995, and therefore had a big part in the early success of this yearly event. He has spoken at all but one or two Extravaganzas since then.

Willem Heijns World Class Speaker Extravaganza 2013

When Willem Heijns, of the Netherlands, was in his early 20s, his wife brought home a small aquarium that had been set up in her office at work. The tank just seemed a bother to Willem, until a Black Mollie gave birth. Willem was so taken with the spectacle that he wanted another, bigger, aquarium. His interest grew, along with his collection of tanks. When he was given a Firemouth, his fascination increased even more, and Central American cichlids have been the focus of his aquaristic interest ever since.

As Willem’s knowledge of cichlids grew, so did his curiosity to learn even more. He started going on collecting expeditions to Mexico and Central America in 1989, accompanied by the likes of Juan Miguel Artigas-Asaz, Ad Konings and (current OCA president) Don Danko. His last three trips were to Nicaragua to study its crater lakes and their cichlids.

It’s no surprise that Willem had a large influence on the Dutch cichlid hobby. Interestingly enough, he also quietly influenced its American counterpart. From the mid 1980s into the early 1990s, Willem and Don Danko, here in Ohio, had a mutually beneficial arrangement. Each sent to the other fish that were unavailable in the other’s country. Species such as Nandopsis tetracanthus (Cubans), Paratheraps zonatus and even Neolamprologus buescheri were introduced into the US hobby by this partnership.

Willem has generously shared his accumulated knowledge and photographic images by writing numerous articles, many published on The Cichlid Room Companion (http://www.cichlidae.com). He is also active on the CRC forums, especially the Central America and Taxonomy sections. His Nicaraguan travels have resulted in the production of a well-regarded DVD, “ Nicaragua, Cichlids from the Crater”, which is available from Cichlid Press.

Willem’s days as an active fish-keeper sadly came to an end in 2011. His fishroom, famously called the Cichlidarium, was of a more-or-less experimental design, and featured tanks up to 600 gallons each. After a series of spectacular tank collapses, he decided to close down the Cichlidarium, partly because of safety concerns.

Today, at age 65 and retired from the banking industry, Willem remains active in other aspects of the hobby. He is the president of the Dutch Cichlid Association, to which he has belonged for 35 years. He continues to write and to give presentations. He made his first Extravaganza talk in 1997, our 3rd Extravaganza. This is his 5th Extravaganza appearance.

Willem will speak on Saturday at 9:00 AM. His talk is entitled “Mexico, A Journey into the World of Cichlids”. It is an audience-interactive presentation during which audience members can suggest certain areas of Mexico and be virtually taken there to study the area’s cichlids and cichlid habitats.

Thomas Andersen World Class Speaker Extravaganza 2013

Thomas Andersen was born in Aarhus, Denmark. When he was a child, his grandfather surprised him with an aquarium, and it captured his young imagination. At age 10, he discovered cichlids and quickly developed an interest in those from Lake Tanganyika. After gaining experience with various Lamprologine and Tropheus species, he turned to the sand-dwellers around age 20. For the past seven years, he has focused on the deepwater species of Xenotilapia, along with Trematocara, Bathybates and various Limnochromines.

Thomas has written extensively about his beloved Tanganyikan cichlids. Many of these articles can be found on The Cichlid Room Companion (www.cichlidae.com). They are collected, along with other writers’ work, in a section of the CRC called “Tribe Ectodini”. This tribe includes genera such as , Cyathopharynx, Enantiopus, and Xenotilapia. He also moderates and is active on the “Lake Tanganyika Sand-dwellers and Featherfins” part of the CRC forum.

Thomas currently lives in Skanderborg, Denmark, along with his wife and two children. He maintains a fishroom of around 1800 gallons.

Thomas’s first-ever presentation given to an American audience is scheduled for Friday at 8:00 PM. It is entitled “The Deepwater Species of Xenotilapa from Lake Tanganyika”.

Shane Linder World Class Speaker Extravaganza 2013

At the beginning of 1999, the Ohio Cichlid Association had some changes in mind…well, not just changes, more like growth. Because so many cichlid keepers also keep catfish, the OCA’s expansion into the world of Siluriforms seemed natural. To initiate this new direction, the speaker at the January 1999 social meeting was well-known catfish expert Shane Linder.

Shane, from the D.C. area, was best know at the time for his catfish articles in TFH, FAMA and European publications, and for his column in the North America Catfish Society’s journal. A few years earlier, he got involved with Planet Catfish (http://www.planetcatfish.com), which was, and is still today, the most complete catfish- oriented web destination, at least among those in English. The site was only a few years old at the time, and his role was to edit “Shane’s World”, the part of the site dedicated to articles by him and other knowledgeable catfish writers. This arrangement continues to the present day, with “Shane’s World” now holding well over 150 articles.

Shortly after his visit to the OCA, Shane’s “day job” took him abroad, first to Latin America, and, more recently, to Africa. This afforded him the opportunity to collect fish, and to study their ecology, in far-flung placed for extended periods of time. He was able to collect in Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, South Africa and Uganda. The expeditions provided the material for the two talks he’ll give this weekend.

Shane has given presentations for many organizations and events in both the US and Europe. He currently participates in the All Catfish Species Inventory, a project funded by the National Science Foundation. According to its website, the Inventory’s mission is to “facilitate the discovery, description and dissemination of knowledge of all catfish species by a consortium of taxonomists and systematists.”

Shane’s first talk, at 6:00 PM on Friday, will be “Collecting Venezuela and Colombia: The Romance and the Reality”, and will focus mainly on catfishes. His Saturday, 10:00 PM talk, “Collecting Uganda: The Pearl of Africa”, will feature both cats and cichlids.

OCA Extravaganza 2012 Remembered: Display Tanks

By: Gary Mendez

Last year was the first year that the Ohio Cichlid Association decided to have display tanks in the lobby of the hotel during the OCA Extravaganza. This year’s Extravaganza will be bigger and better. The aim of the display tanks is to give aquarists that are novices and experts a chance to see several tanks of fish from different parts of the world.

In 2012 the following tanks were featured:

75 gallon Lake Malawi Tank

75 gallon Tanganyika Tank

30 gallon Tanganyika Tank

The aquariums are decorated in a way to make an eye catching display. Last year the tanks contained both tufa rock and Texas Holey Rock, graciously donated by Ohio Holey Rock. The Malawi Tank contained various adult male Victorian cichlids, donated by Laif DeMason. The Tanganyikan tanks contained various Tanganyikan cichlids donated by Mike’s Cichlids. The two 75 gallon tanks complete with lights and filtration and stands were donated by RMS Aquaculture. The 30 complete gallon set up was donated by Steve Shin at Aquatica. The OCA greatly appreciates the kind donations.

At the conclusion of the Extravaganza, the fish and tanks are auctioned to the highest bidder. All bids are tax deductible. Last year we had a silent auction for the fish and tanks. Two sheets of paper were place on the tanks. One for the fish and one for the tanks. At a predetermined time the silent auction closes and the sheets are collected. The winners are announced and the winners take home their new tanks and fish. All proceeds go to the Ohio Cichlid Association.

Andersen Heijns Konings Linder OCA Extravaganza World Renowned Speakers

This year’s Extravaganza is around the corner. The OCA spends all year researching, contacting, and solidifying the speaker lineup. We bring only the best speakers giving presentations on diverse Cichlid and catfish topics. Although the lineup is not ready to be presented just yet, know that this year’s speakers are unbelievable. The amount of knowledge these guys will give you will make your brains hurt. Be prepared to have a notebook with you because there will be a list of fish you will be dying to keep after each speech. On Saturday early afternoon, we will even have a speaker meet and greet, where you can ask the experts individual questions. Although these people are famous, at the core, they are just fish lovers like you. Learn a lot, take the information home, and make a connection.

OCA Extravaganza Room Sales

This year’s Extravaganza is around the corner. Every year the Holiday Inn Strongsville offers OCA Extravaganza members an unbelievable deal on room rates. It makes the weekend easily affordable. With the purchase of a room, many attendees sell fish out of their rooms. If you haven’t seen this in practice, it’s quite amazing. Traveling the few floors of fish salesmen and women is an adventure that will definitely need a few hours. These rooms are not equipped with bed and bags; they are equipped with friends and more containers filled will water than should ever fit in a hotel room! Plan on stopping in each room, meeting a new/old friend, purchasing some fish or dry stock, learning a new technique, and finding everything on your list.

OCA Extravaganza ENORMOUS Auction

This year’s Extravaganza is around the corner. To end the festivities, the OCA hosts a large auction on Sunday, the last day of the show. The auction usually has over 1,000 bags of fish and lasts over ten hours. It’s beautiful madness. Here you can get all the species you have been craving to have in your tanks. Frontosa, Peacocks, Plecos, Souths, Centrals, Tangs, Vics, Haps, Mbuna… Expect everything and anything! If you are a seller, be prepared to make some easy cash! It’s quicker than Ebay! If you are a buyer, start saving your couch change now because you don’t want to miss a bid. The Extravaganza comes only once each year. Let’s start growing out those fry for the show.

OCA Extravaganza HUGE Bowl Show

This year’s Extravaganza is around the corner. Take a peek in your fish rooms and make a note of your potential show fish. This is a great time to start taking serious initiative in preparing these fish for the show. Let’s keep impressing outsides with our stunning Cichlids. If you haven’t entered a fish before, don’t be scared! It’s an awesome feeling to have people gawking over your fish. Also, the Bowl Show is a great time for us to bring all different species together under one roof. How cool would it be to have ten different Peacock variants, six difference species of Herichthys, or a rainbow of Vics? The Bowl Show offers something for everyone on both ends. Let’s promote our club and our hobby.

Participate in 2013.

OCA Extravaganza Saturday Swap Meet

This year’s Extravaganza is around the corner. The OCA started a Saturday Swap Meet a few years back to fill some down time on Saturday before the pizza party and awards banquet. In just a few years the Saturday Swap has gotten HUGE to the point we struggle to find any last room to squeeze more tables. When the crowd hits the room, there is barely any room to walk. It’s a fantastic opportunity to sell your fish at your prices to a large group of interested buyers well before the auction. If you are doing room sales, move some product and have them craving to see you later in the evening. This event benefits everyone and keeps getting bigger each year. Don’t miss out on buying a table or attending the event. Bring your wallets.

The Jim Smith Memorial Fund What’s exciting about the Cichlid hobby is that there are hundreds, maybe thousands of species that we have yet to discover. Unfortunately each day many cichlids are losing their habitat or being consumed by those who don’t understand their value to the local environment and the planet.

The Jim Smith Memorial Fund is used by the members of The Ohio Cichlid Association to help those who study cichlid species and engage in real world efforts to stop habitat destruction. This fund has been used to catalog data that is available to the entire world so that we can all learn more about these species that we all enjoy. We’ve also helped efforts to stop overfishing of cichlids and prevented destruction breeding areas in the African Rift Lakes.

Please help us by supporting the Jim Smith Memorial Fund. You can guarantee that new fish will be available for the future and support those who are making a difference today. You can help by buying raffle tickets, donating supplies and fish, or by offering a cash donation at any OCA meeting or event.
