Holyfield (Beulah Boggan) (Electronic version prepared by NP Computers for Mendenhall Public Library, Lu Ann Bailey Librarian) Due to her life-long (b. 1893) interest, and being a native Mississippian, Miss Beulah has gathered together many historical articles and books, and it is basically from this remarkable and vast collection that the enclosed material has been taken, her love of Mississippi history proved to be contagious. So it is with deep appreciation and a sincere “Thank You” for the special help and encouragement, that another chapter has been added to the extensive recording of the state’s heritage. Miss Beulah has also meticulously and lovingly chronicled the names and dates of her Boggan and related families and it is through this mutual family connection that the compiler became interested in the events concerning the early days. All of the stories have been selected from a series of articles written by the late Bee King, who was a well- known lawyer, historian and writer. The Simpson County News began running the series in their weekly newspaper in 1937 and continued until 1948. Mr. King’s writings are a graphic presentation of the life and times of early Simpson County. He interviewed the elderly citizens through out the area and uniquely recorded for posterity the experiences of the people in day to day living. The picture shows Mr. King in his office when he was Mayor of Mendenhall, the county seat of Simpson County. -

President Ronald Reagan' INTRODUCTION: Tm BIG PAYBACK In recent months, claims for reparations for slavery have gained new popular- ity amongst black intellectuals and trial lawyers and have been given additional momentum by the publication of Randall Robinson's controversial and thought- provoking book, The Debt: What America Owes to Blacks.2 In The Debt, Robinson makes a serious and persuasive case for the payment of reparations by the United States government to African-Americans for both the injustices done to their ancestors during slavery and the effect of those wrongs on the current * Associate Professor of Law, The John Marshall Law School. -

*LRB09416834HSS52111r* HR0798 LRB094 16834 HSS 52111 r 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the 3 State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of Jorja 4 English Palmer on December 29, 2005; and 5 WHEREAS, She was born June 16, 1930, in New Madrid, 6 Missouri, to Frank and Elizabeth (Bessie) Williams; when she 7 was four years old, both of her parents died; she and her 8 brothers and sisters were brought to Chicago, Illinois, where 9 they lived with their aunt, Esther Mack, on Chicago's south 10 side; and 11 WHEREAS, She attended Willard and Forestville Elementary 12 Schools; she graduated from DuSable High School and Chicago 13 City Junior Colleges with honors; while in elementary school, 14 she participated in a special program for the Study of Gifted 15 Children, and in high school, she was singled out by several 16 teachers to join the NAACP and Youth Committee, involvement 17 that began to shape and mold her life for all time to come; and 18 WHEREAS, In 1952, she married Jami English, Sr., and in 19 this union they became parents of four children, Darien Yvonne, 20 Karen Elaine, Jami, Jr., and Stanford; by 1960, she was head of 21 the West Chatham Improvement Organization Education Committee 22 and was sent by that body to the newly formed Chicago Community 23 Council Organization; in the 1970s, she engaged in the fight 24 for an African-American school board president for the Chicago 25 Board of Public Schools and made history as a delegate to the 26 National Black Political Assembly -

Black people survive through their appropriation of the past and their constant creative improvisation. We live because we can make music in every aspect of our lives – always new/old music. Tradition in ideological frameworks survive through the protection of dogma as a reference to combat the ever present problems that reproduce past oppression. The elders and the books keep us going. Public Schools Wilson. Wilson explores the fine line between an interesting story and a Desepe de Vargas Head of School true story in the American media. When an ambitious African American Tracie Jenkins Director of Arts reporter is hired by a major newspaper, she feels that her assignments Donna Hollis marginalize her. Anxious to rise in the ranks of the paper, she seeks the Director of Student Affairs Sandi Logan right story. When an affluent white teacher is murdered in a “bad” Director of School Administrative neighborhood she investigates a lead that will solve the case and boost her Operations Ronald Lee Newman career, but is it the truth? The Story is a fast-paced, quick-witted narrative Director of Operations and Collaborative Programming that explores the blurring of fact and fiction, morality and ambition in the Savannah Overton American media. This DC Community Heritage Project has been also funded in part by the US Department of the Interior, the National Park Service Historic Preservation Fund grant funds, administered by the DC Historic Preservation Office and by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. This program has received Federal financial assistance for the identification, protection, and/or rehabilitation of historic properties and cultural resources in the District of Columbia.
