The Nugget Thursday, March 29, 2007 opinion — Editorial — Guardian Angels in our midst are good

Our economic boom has its downsides, and one of them seems to be an increase in crime. But does this mean it’s time for us to get our own chapter of the Guardian Angels – a group followed by controversy? They’ll be patrolling Edmonton streets sometime in late August if all goes according to plan, while Calgary currently has eight members keeping an eye out on its streets. In 1979, Curtis Sliwa created the group in response to New York City’s increasing crime rate. At the time, New York City’s mayor Ed Koch opposed the Angels, but now not only does he support the group, but also former mayor Rudolph Giuliani and current Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The same can’t always be said for Canadian cities. Both Toronto Mayor David Miller and Metro Police Chief Bill Blair oppose the Guardian Angels. Miller is quoted as saying, “I believe in police policing the streets.” The men in blue are trained to protect us, but sometimes it seems like they’re not enough, given the local crime we all read about. Well the year is almost over and before we all get raped by exams, we need to party one last time! That is why Geological is throwing the last beer gardens of the year on Wednesday, April 4 at 3 p.m. It’s going to be a killer event. Senate homeboys Kyle Homes and Kevin Vagi have been planning this for about two months. To those of you who have been to one of Kyle Holmes’s parties you know his events are where it’s at. Maverick girls

It looks very promising. It’s being sponsored by the Mav- erick Brewing Company, with Maverick girls bartending, and there is a rumour that Yukon Jack from the Bear might be coming down to join the crunk action. The Freeloading Hucksters is one of three bands scheduled for the event. They’ll be serving Maver- ick Supreme Lager, Maverick’s Pilsner, rye, vodka and rum (ah IT’LL ALWAYS BE yes, rum). They’re also firing up The Annex Grill for some killer burgers, and as always, the beautiful ladies of The Annex will definitely be there.
