Copyright 2016 Robert Louis Friedman ! ! Abstract This thesis investigates the techniques of Rudyard Kipling and his influence on my “novel of short stories”. How did Kipling advance the short story form over a half-century of experimentation? How did his approaches enliven the reader’s experience to such a degree that his greatest works have remained in print? Beginning in 1888 with Plain Tales From the Hills, Kipling utilized three innovative techniques: the accretion of unrelated stories into the substance of a novel; the use of tales with their fantastical dreamlike appeal (as opposed to standard fictional styles of realism or naturalism) to both salute and satirize characters in adult fiction; and the swift deployment of back story to enhance both the interwoven nature and tale-like feel of the collection. -

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] America's Raj: Kipling, Masculinity and Empire Abstract The posters for Gunga Din promised much: 'Thrills for a thousand movies, plundered for one mighty show'. That show was a valentine to the British Raj, in which three sergeants (engagingly played by Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.) defeat marauding hoards of 'natives' with the aid of their 'Uncle Tom' water bearer, Gunga Din (Sam Jaffe)[Plate VII]. Audiences loved it. Its racism notwithstanding, even an astute viewer like Bertolt Brecht confessed: 'My heart was touched ... f felt like applauding and laughed in all the right places'. 1 Outwardly the film had little ot do with the United States. THE CARRINGTON EXTRACTS CUMULATIVE INDEX – PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS – TO 1910 (INCLUSIVE) This index has been compiled straight from the text of the ‘Extracts’. In listing the movements, particularly of Kipling and his family, it is not always clear when who went where and when. Thus, “R. to Academy dinner” clearly refers to Kipling himself going alone to the dinner (as, indeed would have been the case – it was, in the 1890s, a men-only affair). But “Amusing dinner, Mr. Rhodes’s” probably refers to both of them going, and has been included as an entry under both Kipling, Caroline, and Kipling, Rudyard. There are many other similar events. And there are entries recording that, e.g., “Mrs. Kipling leaves”, without any indication of when she had come – but if it’s not in the ‘Extracts’ (though it may well have been in the original diaries) then, of course, it has not been possible to index it. The date given is the date of the diary entry which is not always the date of the event. Another factor is that Carrington quite often mentions a name without further explanation or identification. We assume that he recorded it, with a view to mentioning the subject in the text of the biography, but either changed his mind or edited it out for some reason. In some cases, later biographers have picked up the reference, and explained it. In those cases, we have gratefully recorded their identification. Coed: I don't know, I've never kippled. While not a dismal science, annotation is at best an inexact one especially when appli ed to a text as polymathically perverse as Gravity's Rainbow. Like other readers, annotators are burdened by their ow n plots, their "terministic screens," as Kenneth Burke would have it, as well as by the chimeric nature of their archaeologies : the haphazardly attained, hermetical cu ltural literacy of another human being. One is not surprised that information not tending directly to support the annotator's thesis occasionally slips through the cracks or that the annotator might stop looking when he or she seems to have found an adequate source. -

Ragle (Director of Salzburg Seminar, Austria) In 1936 Howard Rice, Jr., published a little volume entitled Rudyard Kipling in New England. Rather than representing the culmination of his interest in Kipling, however, this was merely the first evidence of it. Throughout the rest of his life—whüe teaching French at Harvard, broadcasting for the Office of War Information, serving briefly as Director of the U.S. Information Library in Paris, then as Assistant Librarian for Rare Books and Special Collections at the Princeton University Library for over twenty years until his retirement in 1970—he patiently researched aU the references to KipUng he could find in the local newspapers of the time. NaturaUy this research included Kipling's brother-in-law Wolcott Balestier's life and works (he once told me jokingly that he was probably the only Uving American to have read Wolcott's "complete works") as well as the history of the Balestier family. Then one day, it must have been in 1979, he appeared in my office at Marlboro CoUege with three large boxes containing the typescript of a book, almost complete, entitled Kipling's Vermont Period and asked my help in getting it published. -

Kipling’s power as writer can be estimated from the highly prestigious reputation that his works still enjoy in the present academia and the present generation of readers. Kipling tired his hand at almost all forms of English literature including poems, short stories, novels and children’s books. His fame chiefly rests upon works of fiction like The Jungle Book , Kim , Just so Stories, The Man who Would be King and poems, including Mandalay , The White Man’s Burden and If. I have attempted to analyse Kipling’s works with reference to his personal experiences to establish that most of his successful works emerged out of his intuitions and circumstances that he faced in his life.
