International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning Volume 18, Number 1 February – 2017 Why Do Academics Use Academic Social Networking Sites? Hagit Meishar-Tal1 and Efrat Pieterse2 1Holon institute of Technology (HIT), 2Western Galilee College Abstract Academic social-networking sites (ASNS) such as Academia.edu and ResearchGate are becoming very popular among academics. These sites allow uploading academic articles, abstracts, and links to published articles; track demand for published articles, and engage in professional interaction. This study investigates the nature of the use and the perceived utility of the sites for academics. The study employs the Uses and Gratifications theory to analyze the use of ASNS. A questionnaire was sent to all faculty members at three academic institutions. The findings indicate that researchers use ASNS mainly for consumption of information, slightly less for sharing of information, and very scantily for interaction with others. As for the gratifications that motivate users to visit ASNS, four main ones were found: self-promotion and ego-bolstering, acquisition of professional knowledge, belonging to a peer community, and interaction with peers. The sites, used by millions (Van Noorden, 2014), constitute a major addition to scientific media. -

As we create and expand more and more data within our interconnected electronic universe, the threat that they bring to its fragile structure grows as well. However Anonymous is not the only group of hackers/activists or hacktivists that have made their presence known. LulzSec was a group that wreaked havoc with information systems in 2011. This will be a case study examination of their activities so that a better understanding of five aspects can be obtained: the Timeline of activities, the Targets of attack, the Tactics the group used, the makeup of the Team and a category which will be referred to as The Twist for reasons which will be made clear at the end of the paper. Helping young people manage their online identity 5 Things you can do to support children Start with a positive 1 conversation • Discuss what they enjoy and why (apps / Favourite vloggers/ website / social networks). • Talk about how and who they share their lives with online – make sure to touch on what they would and wouldn't share. • Have a chat about what their online identity means to them and how they feel it reflects who they really are. • Discuss the issues they may face such as pressure to conform or encountering negativity and provide guidance and advice. Get them to think critically about 2 online and offline influences • Encourage them to think about the intentions behind what people share and be sure to check sources of information if they seem too good to be true. • Make sure they have a varied digital diet to ensure they are exposed to a range of ideas that will give them a balanced view of the world. Encourage them to review 3 their data and privacy • To ensure they stay in control of the information they share online, get them to regularly check who they are friends with online and what data they are showing on the platforms they use. • Doing a regular Google search on their name can be a simple way to manage what content is visible to everyone or remove content that may be incorrect or harmful to their reputation. This could be only sharing certain content with people who offer positive encouragement and avoiding and reporting toxic environments online. -

II Abstract In 2004, annual Australian viewership of Australian cinema, regularly averaging below 5%, reached an all-time low of 1.3%. Considering Australia ranks among the top nations in both screens and cinema attendance per capita, and that Australians’ biggest cultural consumption is screen products and multi-media equipment, suggests that Australians love cinema, but refrain from watching their own. Why? During its golden period, 1970-1988, Australian cinema was operating under combined private and government investment, and responsible for critical and commercial successes. However, over the past thirty years, 1988-2018, due to the detrimental role of government film agencies played in binding Australian cinema to government funding, Australian films are perceived as under-developed, low budget, and depressing. Out of hundreds of films produced, and investment of billions of dollars, only a dozen managed to recoup their budget. The thesis demonstrates how ‘Australian national cinema’ discourse helped funding bodies consolidate their power. Australian filmmaking is defined by three ongoing and unresolved frictions: one external and two internal. Swipe Right: An exploration of self-presentation and impression management on Tinder Abstract: The emergence of Location-Based-Real-Time-Dating (LBRTD) apps such as Tinder, has introduced a new way for users to get to know potential partners nearby. The design of the app represents a departure from "oldschool" dating sites as it leaves plenty of space for pictures, but only minimal room for self-description. This might change the way individuals decide to portray themselves as their real, ideal or ought-to self. Based on empirical data collected in the Netherlands, we try to assess how Tinder users present themselves, exploring at the same time the impact of their personality and their motives of use. Introduction Back in 1994, around the time when Match.com was registered as the first dating website, online match-making seemed an exotic opportunity, more likely to belong in a Hollywood movie (such as You've Got M@il, from 1998) than in the daily experiences of the average citizen. A lot has changed since then. A 2013 study from Pew Research has found that an estimated 5 percent of married or committed couples in the US met their significant other online (Lenhart & Duggan, 2014). Even more strikingly, 11 percent of the online adult American population claims to have used a dating site at least once in their lifetime (Lenhart & Duggan, 2014). While less data is available for the rest of the world, the market for online dating has seen a similar trend of dramatic growth in countries such as India (Joshi & Kumar, 2012) and the UK (Kee & Yazdanifard, 2015). -

Emily Merritt 06/22/12 An Analysis of the Discourse of Internet Trolling: A Case Study of Reddit.com Student presenter: Emily Rose Merritt Project advisor: Esther Castro-Cuenca With the proliferation of social media and community discussion and forum websites, interest in understanding and explaining communication on the Internet (with an emphasis on language-based communication) is on the rise. Over time, new genres of interaction have developed that take place primarily or exclusively in online communication, and with them has developed the need to investigate the structure of these interactions, what their function is within conversations and communities, what their place is within certain Internet discourses, and over time what effects they have on communication on and offline. Thus far many of these genres have been deemed at best disruptive and at worst anti-social, but when studied from a judgment-free point of view show high levels of complexity and offer us excellent opportunities to understand how the Internet is shaping and being shaped by new kinds and contexts of communication. One of these genres of interaction that has gained significant fame on some very popular forums and discussion sites is called trolling. Trolling occurs on discussion sites or message boards when a user intentionally posts erroneous or inflammatory information with the intention of provoking a strong reaction out of other users. The objective of this study is to understand the complexities of trolling, as well as some of its functions and outcomes in anonymous online communication. -

ITU Botnet Mitigation Toolkit Background Information ICT Applications and Cybersecurity Division Policies and Strategies Department ITU Telecommunication Development Sector January 2008 Acknowledgements Botnets (also called zombie armies or drone armies) are networks of compromised computers infected with viruses or malware to turn them into “zombies” or “robots” – computers that can be controlled without the owners’ knowledge. Criminals can use the collective computing power and connected bandwidth of these externally-controlled networks for malicious purposes and criminal activities, including, inter alia, generation of spam e-mails, launching of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, alteration or destruction of data, and identity theft. The threat from botnets is growing fast. The latest (2007) generation of botnets such as the Storm Worm uses particularly aggressive techniques such as fast-flux networks and striking back with DDoS attacks against security vendors trying to mitigate them. An underground economy has now sprung up around botnets, yielding significant revenues for authors of computer viruses, botnet controllers and criminals who commission this illegal activity by renting botnets. In response to this growing threat, ITU is developing a Botnet Mitigation Toolkit to assist in mitigating the problem of botnets. This document provides background information on the toolkit.
