The Colorado Nurses Foundation is proud to present the 34th Annual Nightingale Luminary Awards The Colorado Nurses Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving health care and nursing practice in Colorado. CNF began October 3, 1987, as the Nursing Institute of Colorado. Although the name has changed, the mission of the organization has remained essentially the same. We encourage nurses, other health care providers, and consumers to join us to work together for quality health care. CNF is devoted to creating nursing excellence through the promotion of educational and scientific activities and community- based projects. In keeping with the Foundation’s mission, the Nightingale Luminary Event is focused on recognition of nurses who have demonstrated outcomes that improve patient care and the environment in which healthcare is delivered. In recognition of the complexity of that environment, the Luminaries honored tonight represent the necessary diversity in nursing practice that is required to achieve quality care. These Luminaries were selected from around the state by regional AHECs and local committees. Community celebrations were held honoring all nominees. The Luminaries represent two categories of nursing practice, each evaluated on three professional aspects of nursing practice: Administration, Education, Research and Non-Traditional Practice Roles Advocacy, Leadership, Innovation Clinical Practice/ Direct Patient Care Advocacy, Leadership, Innovation Each of the Luminaries is a potential recipient of the prestigious Nightingale Award. The Nightingale Luminary theme of “Excellence in Nursing Profession- al Engagement & Citizenship” reflects the CNF Strategic Initiative to reframe the profession of nursing and the professional engagement of nurses. It is our hope that this new approach will allow for expanded recognition of nursing excellence in Colorado. Tonight’s Mistress of Ceremonies Karen Tomky, FNP Tonight’s Mistress of Ceremonies is Karen Tomky, FNP. Karen was awarded the Florence Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing in 2001. She also has served on the Board of Directors for the Southeast Area AHEC for many years. Karen graduated Valedictorian from Crowley County High School in Ordway, Colorado in 1971. She went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from the University of Northern Colorado School of Nursing with a BSN in 1975. She pursued her Masters Degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Utah and graduated in August 1981. At the time there were only 5 colleges in the nation that had Masters preparations for FNPs. While in Salt Lake City she was Vice President of the Utah Nurses Association and was very active in passing Legislation for pre- scribing privileges for Nurse Practitioners. She also received the Outstanding Clinical Nurse in Utah in 1985. In 1987 she was recruited by Dr. Berg, Family Physician in Ordway Colorado, to join in her Rural Family Practice. It was a big decision for Karen and her husband, Matt Heimerich, to move back to the farming community where she grew up. However Dr. Berg convinced her that “she would be replaced as an FNP in Salt Lake City, but she would make a huge difference in the lives of so many people in the rural underserved county in southeastern Colorado.” In 2003 Dr. Berg retired and Karen bought her Rural Health Clinic and became one of the first Family Nurse Practitioners to own a practice in Colorado. That brought a whole lot of challenges to get insurance companies to pay FNPs directly for their services and issues with the medical community. Karen has been active in the Colorado Nurses Association’s challenges to advance the autonomous practice and prescription privileges for Advanced Practice Nurses. She was appointed by Gov. Ritter to the Collaborative Scope of Practice for Advanced Practice Nurses in 2007 and to the 208 Health Care Task Force for Provider in 2008. She also is an advocate for rural health care and served as a Board Member for Colorado Rural Health Center. One of her enjoyments and challenges has been precepting many Advanced Practice Nursing students and exposing them to rural health care. She has been a preceptor for many of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Colorado and online programs.     The Unified Theory of Meaning Emergence Mike Taylor RN, MHA, CDE Author Unaffiliated Nursing Theorist [email protected] Member of the Board – Plexus Institute Specialist in Complexity and Health Lead designer – The Commons Project, a web based climate change intervention My nursing theory book, “Nursing, Complexity and the Science of Compassion”, is currently under consideration by Springer Publishing 1 Introduction Nursing science and theory is unique among the scientific disciplines with its emphasis on the human-environment relationship since the time of Florence Nightingale. An excellent review article in the Jan-Mar 2019 issue of Advances in Nursing Science, explores the range of nursing thought and theory from metaparadigms and grand theories to middle range theories and identifies a common theme. A Unitary Transformative Person-Environment-Health process is both the knowledge and the art of nursing. This type of conceptual framework is both compatible with and informed by complexity science and this theory restates the Human-Environment in a complexity science framework. This theory makes a two-fold contribution to the science of nursing and health, the first is in the consolidation and restatement of already successful applications of complexity theory to demonstrate commonalities in adaptive principles in all systems through a unified definition of process. Having a unified theoretical platform allows the application of the common process to extend current understanding and potentially open whole new areas for exploration and intervention. Secondly, the theory makes a significant contribution in tying together the mathematical and conceptual frameworks of complexity when most of the literature on complexity in health separate them (Krakauer, J., 2017).

    A Light in the Darkness: FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE’S LEGACY Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of nursing, was born on May 12, 1820. In celebration of her 200th birthday, the World Health Organization declared 2020 the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife.” It's now clear that nurses and health care providers of all kinds face extraordinary circumstances this year. Nightingale had a lasting influence on patient care that's apparent even today. Nightingale earned the nickname “the Lady with the Lamp” because she checked on patients at night, which was rare at the time and especially rare for head nurses to do. COURTESY OF THE WELLCOME COLLECTION When Florence Nightingale was growing up in England in the early 19th century, nursing was not yet a respected profession. It was a trade that involved little training. Women from upper-class families like hers were not expected to handle strangers’ bodily functions. She defied her family because she saw nursing as a calling. Beginning in 1854, Nightingale led a team of nurses in the Crimean War, stationed in present-day Turkey. She saw that the overcrowded, stuffy hospital with an overwhelmed sewer system was leading to high death rates. She wrote to newspapers back home, inspiring the construction of a new hospital. The Director adopts and hereby incorporates by reference as modified herein the 2013 edition of the Relative Values for Physicians (RVP©), developed by Relative Value Studies, Inc., published by OPTUMINSIGHT (Ingenix®), the Current Procedural Terminology CPT® 2013, Professional Edition, published by the American Medical Association (AMA) and Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRGs) Definitions Manual, Version 31.0 developed and published by 3M Health Information Systems using MS-DRGs effective after October 1, 2013.     FACTS ABOUT FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE BIRTH AND EARLY LIFE • Born in Florence, Italy, on May 12th, 1820 (named for the city) to an affluent British family • Nightingale was active in philanthropy as a child, and believed nursing to be her “divine purpose” (Biography.com, Background and early life section). NURSING EDUCATION AND BEGINNING CAREER • Enrolled at the nursing program at the Institution of Protestant Deaconesses in Kaiserswerth, Germany in 1850-1851. • Found employment at the Harley Street hospital as a nurse, and was soon promoted to superintendent all in 1853 (Biography.com, Background and early life section). • Her parents viewed her career choice as unwise, given her social position and the expectation that she might “marry a man of means to ensure her class standing.” DID YOU KNOW? Nightingale was a prodigious and versatile writer. She was also a pioneer in data visualization with the use of infographics, effectively using graphical presentations of statistical data. As the English and French sent their troops to Turkey as allies, there was a need for a mobile nursing unit to accompany them and handle the outbreaks of cholera, dysentery, and other serious disorders – as well as treat those who had succumbed to battle injuries. • Florence Nightingale was asked to lead a volunteer group of nurses to Scutari, which was the Greek name for a district in Istanbul.
