Discussion

Introduction

The main objective of IMAGINATION is to bring digital cultural and scientific resources closer to their users. Our aim is to enable image-based navigation for such resources. Users can receive meaningful contextual information about images and image parts, which makes images easier to understand. Moreover, IMAGINATION allows users to navigate to other relevant images and texts in the knowledge repository just by clicking on interesting image parts.

The major instrument to provide context-sensitive relevant information is the use of semantic metadata. They are created by combining the results of automated processes, such as object and face detection, face identification and text mining.

Gabor Nagypal will give a presentation about the semantic background used in IMAGINATION, especially about developed methodologies for the collaborative development of required ontologies and how semantic technologies may be used for image search in professional image archives and cultural heritage

Andreas Walter will give a presentation about the so called ImageNotion application, which was developed during the IMAGINATION Project. This Web based application integrates the possibilities for managing images and integrating and combining processes for automated image annotation. The image annotation is based on semantic technologies. ImageNotion allows for semantic search for image searchers, validation of the results for image annotators and also the possibility for manually adding new image annotation and semantic elements.

Aline Lauvergeon and Rosanna de Longis will give presentations about contents used in the IMAGINATION Project. Aline Lauvergeon from the focus of professional image archives and the benefits of the results of the IMAGINATION. Rosanna de Longis presents the benefits for contents used in cultural heritage setups, e.g. as used in the Biblioteca di Storia Moderna Contemporanea

14 BSMC in Roma. Representatives of the user groups who carried out the evaluation of the Project results will provide some views about their experience.

Finally, Pasquale Savino as invited speaker will give a presentation about the MULTIMATCH Project.

15 On this basis, ATHENA will harmonize at European level terminology, cataloguing and descriptive standards for the digital resources produced by museums and other cultural Institutions, with the aim of contributing effectively to the process of construction of Europeana. Thanks to ATHENA the presence of the heritage data bases in Europeana will be enhanced, expecially those of the museums. ATHENA is coordinated by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities, managed by the Central Institute for the Union Catalogue of Italian Libraries and Bibliographic Information (ICCU) in collaboration with the Central Institute for Cataloguing and Documentation (ICCD). The consortium is formed by Ministries, Universities , Museums, and by other cultural agencies of 22 countries.

Abstract Monasterium.net and ICARUS – An attempt for international content collection and Know-How exchange in the archivistic sector

In the year 2002 the Austrian province of Lower Austria was the starting point for the Project Monasterium.net, that holds at present app. 120.000 medieval and early modern charters, contributed by more than 60 partners in eleven countries (AT, DE, CH, CZ, SK, HU, SI, HR, IT, PL, SRB). These charters are provided with digital pictures and corresponding metadata on the Internet (www.monasterium.net) free of charge and the database is by far the biggest virtual collection of its kind.

These documents which are the basic source for the Central European history are now available to a broad public audience at any time without the limitations of place of storage, poor accessibility and conservatory restrictions. Due to this unique collection historic research is now enabled to find answers to completely new questions regarding former existing medieval Europe-wide networks, whose exitence is clearly mirrored by the content of the digitized stocks.

The enterprise to build up a virtual archive through the years resulted an international network of cooperating partners, that consists of archives of all sizes, research institutions or universities. During regular half-year meetings the international exchange of experience and knowledge became an important aspect of collaboration due to the shared common history of the participating countries and simillar goals of the archives. In order to keep this network of partners firm and stabile the ICARUS (International Centre for Archival Research) association was found in 2007.

Monasterium is much more, than only an ordinary database. Beside the classical functions of querry and viewing, the user is enabled to make his active contribution by using the collaborative tool EditMOM in order to enlarge or emend the already existing amount of metadata. This tool offers completely new possibilities in the field of education and teaching at schools and universities.

The Workshop on one hand will provide a detailed insight into the internal work-flow of the Project Monasterium, covering the process of digitization of the original sources and the development and preparation of metadata. On the other hand another topic will be the introduction of the technical background of the system and the exemplary practical collaborative work on single charters.

Thursday, 30 April ROOM B WORKSHOP 6 ENRICH PROJECT 9,30 – 13,00 Chairmen: Jakub Heller, Cross Czech a.s., Prague, Czech Republic, Roberto Caldelli, Centro per la Comunicazione e l’Integrazione dei Media, Florence, Italy

Introduction ENRICH is a Project funded under eContent+ programme. Main aim of the Project is to create seamless access to distributed information about manuscripts and rare old printed books in Europe on the Manuscriptorium platform. Manuscriptorium is the digital library that - at the beginning of ENRICH - contained data of 47 partners from the Czech Republic and abroad. It is the largest digital library of manuscripts in Europe offering access to more than one million digitized pages and a lot of descriptive data. ENRICH will enhance the Manuscriptorium content through connecting additional digital libraries and taking aboard those who do not have them. To achieve this goal, many existing technologies will be optimized and new ones developed. ENRICH started on 1 December 2007 and it will last until 30 November 2009. During this time, it should add to Manuscriptorium more than five million digitized pages from direct ENRICH partner institutions and hundreds of thousands of additional pages from other associated partners.

ROOM B WORKSHOP 7 USER-CENTERED DESIGN FOR MUSEUM WEBSITES AND 14,30 – 18,00 TECHNOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS

Description

Museums apply websites and technological applications to serve a heterogeneous audience. In order to meet the needs of different target groups, they can apply personas. Personas are archetypical user representations based either on experience (ad-hoc personas) or on quantitative and/or qualitative data (data-based personas). Personas help to creatively explore a design space of opportunities, constraints, innovations, and trade-offs while maintaining a constant user-centered focus. When developing interactive applications for both traditional and virtual museums, having an appropriate orientation towards and understanding of visitor needs is critical for success.

The concept of personas can help translate abstract data from visitor studies into concepts that can be easily applied in information design. Personas allow information designers to identify user needs and goals, creating requirements suitable for use in the information design process. They also are a powerful medium to enable stakeholders to participate in that design process. In this way, the personas method can help designers of all types of applications to develop usable and more user- oriented products.

This active, hands-on Workshop will provide the participants with the results from the study “La trasmissione culturale attraverso applicazioni tecnologiche” by Elena Bonini; an introduction to the personas method; examples of personas suitable for use in museums; a personas creation experience based on visitor study data.
