Alternatively, audience members may choose to attend the post-concert reception in Higginson Hall, tonight featuring live music with the Tucker Antell Quintet. pizzetti “messa di requiem,” for a cappella chorus I. Born in Parma, Italy, Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968) at first showed a preference for the theater, only later, in 1895, entering Parma Conservatory to study music. With Italian opera at its height, Pizzetti began trying to combine his two interests, eventually collaborating with the famous writer Gabriele D’Annunzio on two operas and writing incidental music for his plays. Pizzetti was director of the Milan Conser- vatory, then taught at Rome’s Accademia di Santa Cecilia, retiring in 1958. He taught such important composers as Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Franco Donatoni, and Reginald Smith Brindle. -

2020 SEASON AT-A-GLANCE In the 2020 Tanglewood season, BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons leads twelve BSO concerts including Act III of Wagner’s Tannhäuser (7/11) and three programs showcasing Paul Lewis in all five Beethoven piano concertos (7/17–19). The Roots Report: Toto at Twin River
The Roots Report: Toto at Twin River Okee dokee folks… I went to Twin River in Lincoln the other night to check out the band Toto. There was a nearly full house in attendance and from the looks of the array of Toto t-shirts I saw folks wearing, a lot of big fans. I cannot be counted as a big fan. I am a casual listener, but I do enjoy a few of their songs. The lights went down right at 8pm and the backing band members took the stage and rocked a bit before the actual members of Toto — Steve Lukathar, David Paich, Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams — arrived on stage. They launched into the song, “Only The Children.” Surprisingly, the second song was their debut hit “Hold The Line.” That brought the audience to their feet and they sang along encouraged by lead singer, Joseph Williams. They played three more songs, “Afraid of Love,” “Lovers in the Night” and “Pamela” before I recognized the “lite rock” favorite “I’ll Be Over You.” Williams encouraged fans to light up their phones and wave them in the air. The next song, “Chinatown,” was introduced as originally being written for the Toto I album, but over the years it was re-written and rearranged for the Toto XIV album. They talked about a recently discovered video that they came across of the band performing in Montreux and it inspired them to perform their version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Red House.” This featured a fiery guitar solo by Steve Lukathar. They introduced the band at this point, Lenny Castro (percussion), Warren Ham (saxophone), Shannon Forres (drums) and Shem von Schroeck (bass). -

Al Choirs Including the Gabrieli Consort, the Choir of the Enlightenment, Wrocław Philharmonic, and BBC Singers
2012. His extensive choral conducting has included guest invitations with profession- al choirs including the Gabrieli Consort, the Choir of the Enlightenment, Wrocław Philharmonic, and BBC Singers. From 2002 to 2009 he served as choral director at the Hallé Orchestra, where he was music director of the Hallé Choir and founding conductor of the Hallé Youth Choir, winning the Gramophone Choral Award in 2009. He returned to Manchester in 2014, preparing the choirs for a Grammy-nominated recording under Sir Mark Elder of Vaughan Williams’s Sea Symphony. Since 2002 he has been music director of the chamber choir Schola Cantorum of Oxford. He col- laborates regularly with leading young musicians and in 2017 appears as guest direc- tor of the National Youth Choir of Japan and the Princeton University Glee Club. He also teaches conducting, and has given master classes at the Royal Academy of Music and Royal Welsh College of Music. In 2011 he founded a conducting scholarship with Schola Cantorum of Oxford. His compositions and arrangements have been per- formed internationally, and his orchestral arrangements for Arlo Guthrie have been performed by the Boston Pops, by many other leading U.S. orchestras, and at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. His commissions have included the music for the 2010 World Equestrian Games opening ceremony, a setting for chorus and orchestra of Thomas Hardy’s The Convergence of the Twain commemorating the 100th anniversa- ry of the Titanic disaster, and a recent Christmas carol premiered by the Choir of St. John’s College, Cambridge, live on BBC Radio 3. -
