Editorial What a disappointing New Year’s Eve. We were hoping for chaos, turmoil and destruction. Instead we got nothing. While NYE may have been a fizzer we certainly won’t let the rest of the year go the same way. In fact many exciting things are have already happened. The Australian Championships con- cluded in Mingara with Victorian GM ending victorious (see report page 4). The Australian Junior Championships were held in Victoria (see report page 7) and Chess World’s team performed particularly well. The new chess retail shop in Ormond is fully settled in and open for business. We have to welcome a new member to the Chess World family. Full-time coach Wayne Guy has joined the ranks to contribute to school coaching. The great thing about chess is that anyone can play! David Cordover David was awarded the Glen Eira Young Citizen of the Year award in 1997 for “making chess accessible and relevant to young people.” David has been working as a full time chess coach for five years. He was the Australian Junior Champion in 1996, and is the current Under 21 National Champion. Recently David took directorship of Chess World Pty Ltd and runs the retail shop in Ormond as well as the Chess Kids coaching. He has held positions in the Australian Chess Federation (National Director of Junior Chess), Victorian Chess Association and was the Director and founder of the Victorian Junior Chess League.

Wayne Guy A new recruit this year, Wayne was the 1999 Victorian Open Champion. His has been teaching chess full- time for the past two years and taught electronics and computing prior to chess. His exciting style (and pizza nights!) enthuse children no end.

Nick Speck Nick is a former SA State Champion and Australian Junior Cham- pion. He finished 3rd in the 1999 Australian Masters International Chess Tournament and was runner-up in the ‘99 Victorian Champinonships. He has represented Australia overseas on a number of occasions. Nick has been involved with full-time coaching for a long time and is now employed full-time with Chess Kids. He is currently coaching at Xavier College, Glamor- gan, Essex Heights and St Andrew’s School to name a few.
