News for Friends of Leonard Bernstein Spring/Summer 2016 High-brow, Low-brow, All-brow Bernstein, Gershwin, Ellington, and the Richness of American Music © VICTOR © VICTOR KRAFT by Michael Barrett uch of my professional life has been spent on convincing music lovers Mthat categorizing music as “classical” or “popular” is a fool’s errand. I’m not surprised that people s t i l l c l i n g t o t h e s e d i v i s i o n s . S o m e w h o love classical masterpieces may need to feel reassured by their sophistication, looking down on popular culture as dis- posable and inferior. Meanwhile, pop music fans can dismiss classical music lovers as elitist snobs, out of touch with reality and hopelessly “square.” Fortunately, music isn’t so black and white, and such classifications, especially of new music, are becoming ever more anachronistic. With the benefit of time, much of our country’s greatest music, once thought to be merely “popular,” is now taking its rightful place in the category of “American Classics.” I was educated in an environment that was dismissive of much of our great American music. Wanting to be regarded as a “serious” musician, I found myself going along with the thinking of the times, propagated by our most rigid conservatory student in the 1970’s, I grew work that studiously avoided melody or key academic composers and scholars of up convinced that Aaron Copland was a signature. the 1950’s -1970’s. • Commissioned Orchestral Version of Jonathan Dove’S Mansfield Park, Commemorating the 200Th Anniversary of the Death of Jane Austen
The Grange Festival announces the world premiere of a specially- commissioned orchestral version of Jonathan Dove’s Mansfield Park, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the death of Jane Austen Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September 2017 The Grange Festival’s Artistic Director Michael Chance is delighted to announce the world premiere staging of a new orchestral version of Mansfield Park, the critically-acclaimed chamber opera by composer Jonathan Dove and librettist Alasdair Middleton, in September 2017. This production of Mansfield Park puts down a firm marker for The Grange Festival’s desire to extend its work outside the festival season. The Grange Festival’s inaugural summer season, 7 June-9 July 2017, includes brand new productions of Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria, Bizet’s Carmen, Britten’s Albert Herring, as well as a performance of Verdi’s Requiem and an evening devoted to the music of Rodgers & Hammerstein and Rodgers & Hart with the John Wilson Orchestra. Mansfield Park, in September, is a welcome addition to the year, and the first world premiere of specially-commissioned work to take place at The Grange. This newly-orchestrated version of Mansfield Park was commissioned from Jonathan Dove by The Grange Festival to celebrate the serendipity of two significant milestones for Hampshire occurring in 2017: the 200th anniversary of the death of Austen, and the inaugural season of The Grange Festival in the heart of the county with what promises to be a highly entertaining musical staging of one of her best-loved novels. Mansfield Park was originally written by Jonathan Dove to a libretto by Alasdair Middleton based on the novel by Jane Austen for a cast of ten singers with four hands at a single piano.

  • Royal Hospital School Welcome to at the Music
September 2019 – June 2020 music at the royal hospital school welcome to music the at Music at RHS hospital school royal It is my pleasure to share this year’s RHS music programme which again reflects the ambition and talent of our Music Department and pupils. For those who have experienced a chapel service at RHS or witnessed the School’s marching band on Divisions, you will have some appreciation of how important music is to the pupils and to the key events in the school year. The positive benefits of music are well-documented - 2019 from improving well-being and bolstering the immune system, to developing co-ordination. For many of our / pupils it is a valuable counterbalance to the pressures 20 of work and a chance to build friendships through the collaborative nature of making music. This year the programme looks as rich as it is broad, providing opportunities not only for members of the School but also for wider participation. Highlights this year include the welcome return of the award-winning singer Matt Ford, to sing with the Chris Ingham Trio and the RHS Big Band. The joint concert with the British Army Band and the RHS Concert Band in February should also raise the roof! There is also a performance of Verdi’s Requiem with the RHS Chapel Choir, Holbrook Choral Society and the Ipswich Choral Society. Later in the year we present a semi-staged performance of one of the greatest English operas ever written, Dido and Aeneas; and an afternoon of fun and laughter with our annual Come and Sing event, featuring songs from a number of Disney classics.
