This year’s display pays homage to the social, historical, and artistic significance of these beautiful quilts. Historically, many quilts were made with worn out clothing, or pieces left over from making clothing for the family. With these pieces, and careful artistry, the quilts became a part of the fabric of a family. Quilts fulfilled the practical function of warmth, as well as providing comfort and adding colour to a room. Without the use of electric sewing machines, quilts were lovingly handmade, often for someone in particular and with a distinct purpose. Quilting has been part of rural social fabric for many years. RACHEL CLOW

My name is Rachel Clow, and I am currently completing my 4th and final year at and will be graduating with my degree in Honours Biology. My next step is to attend St Laurence College for their Vet Tech program in the fall of 2019. I was born and raised on my family’s dairy farm and am now beginning to build up my own prefix within my parents’ farm. During the summer I work 3 jobs, 2 of them are milking on different farms 6 nights a week, and the third one is trimming feet anywhere from Harrowsmith to Brockville, 5 days a week. I am currently working on a farm just north of my school 4 times a week to help pay for my schooling, but still having enough time to maintain my course grades. I have been in 4H since I was 10 years old and will be graduating from the program in the fall of 2019 and was lucky enough to have won the Royal showmanship competition this past fall. I have completed over 44 clubs in my 11 years of 4H and have won many awards within these clubs. With my degrees I plan on starting up and running my own farm with show heifers and cows and being able to maintain a healthy animal with minimal assistance from an off-farm vet.

REBECCA BARR

Hello, my name is Rebecca Barr and I am one of the fortunate recipients of the 2018 OVSG Scholarship. I am from the small town of Burridge Ontario where I live on a small dairy operation. I have been a member of Frontenac 4H over the last nine years, participating in a variety of clubs including dairy, swine, fitting, veterinary and cheese. Throughout high school, I was involved in various activities such as the rugby, soccer and track team as well as the athletic association, where I was responsible for organizing athletic events. Outside of school, I have volunteered through various organizations including local church fundraisers, bible school, at a local public school and within a children’s program. Growing up, agriculture always played a big part in my life, making it no surprise that I am currently in my second year at the University of Guelph studying agriculture science. Since attending university, I have found involvement within College Royal, where I have held the position of mystery animal director for the past two years. Throughout the remainder of my degree I hope to continue my involvement within College Royal and to participate in additional university activities as well. Upon graduation, I hope to increase my involvement with my family farm and to obtain a career within the agriculture industry.

TAMARA HAMILTON

Hi, my name is Tamara Hamilton and I am currently completing my undergraduate at the University of Guelph . I am studying Bio Resource Management minoring in Environmental Studies. As I wrap up my time at Guelph University, I love reflecting on my time here and all the knowledge I have gained within Agriculture, the connections I have gained, and the memories I have made. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and now I find myself heading off into the adult world. I hope moving forward to continue to be involved in agriculture with any career path I may take. During my final days in Guelph I have decided to make the most out of my year and involved myself more in the community. This year I have taken on the role of Events Director for College Royal, an event that hosts over 800 guests to the university. I oversee many of the events that will be taking place over the weekend and it has been an amazing experience. If that wasn’t enough, I also have taken part in training a new puppy Bangle for the Lions Foundation Dog Guides of Canada. I will train this puppy for 14 months until she goes on to serve someone in anything from vison impaired, seizure alert, PTSD, hearing impaired to just name a few. It has been an amazing experience so far and I encourage everyone to get involved where ever I go.
