Historical Marker - S644 - Buick Motor Company / Buick Motor Company (Marker ID#:S644) Front - Title/Description Buick Motor Company David Dunbar Buick incorporated the Buick Motor Company in Detroit on May 19, 1903, and moved operations to Flint that fall. Flint’s first Buick, completed at a plant on West Kearsley Street, was successfully driven roundtrip to Detroit in July 1904. Motor Age magazine described the Buick as “a little machine that has attracted an immense amount of attention . owing to its high power and low price.” William C. Durant of Flint’s Durant- Dort Carriage Company assumed management of Significant Date: Buick in November. Durant William Crapo Durant (1861-1947), one of Flint’s most important historical figures, was a pioneer in the development of the American auto industry. Durant’s vehicle ventures began in 1886, when, with a borrowed fifteen hundred dollars, he bought the rights to build a two-wheeled road cart. Nine years later the Flint Road Cart Company, begun by Durant and his partner, Dallas Dort, became the Durant-Dort Carriage Company. 110 YEARS OF AMERICAN STYLE: BUICK CELEBRATES ITS ANNIVERSARY WITH A DISPLAY AT THE AACA MUSEUM By Richard P. Sills Buick, one of the oldest surviving brands of American automobiles, celebrated its 110th anniversary on May 19, 2013. It is fitting that this milestone occasion is celebrated by a special display, "Beautiful Buicks: 110 Years of American Style", at the AACA Museum in Hershey, PA. The display coincides with Riviera's 50th anniversary, and the AACA Museum's 10th anniversary. Visitors to the museum are greeted by six Buicks in the lobby, representing the evolution of the marque from horseless carriage to modern high‐performance. On the turntables are a 1910 Buick Model 10 Surrey, owned by the Museum and "adopted" by the Mason‐Dixon Chapter of BCA, and a 1987 GNX loaned by Buick Heritage Alliance board member Guy Bennett of Wayland, New York. The GNX is #470 of just 547 produced, and has less than 600 miles since new. It still has the factory‐installed plastic covers on the seats and carpets. It was sold new by Mr. Bennett's dealership, which has been selling Buicks continuously since 1922. Four other Buicks in the lobby of the Museum represent outstanding examples of the marque as it appeared over the years: 1935 Model 96S Sport Coupe, one of 41 produced and believed to be the only known survivor. Resplendent in Ambassador Maroon with tan leather interior, this elegant coupe is equipped with side mounted tires with steel covers and a luggage rack. It is owned by the Bulgari Collection of Allentown, Pennsylvania, and was restored to participate in Buick's centennial celebration in 2003.' 1964 Rivera, Regal Black with red interior, an elegant example of the first generation of Buick's personal luxury car that was a design triumph of Bill Mitchell and Ned Nickles.

Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History 1908 General Motors is formed William Durant combined Buick, Olds, Cadillac, Elmore and Oakland to create what is now General Motors Incorporated. Durant offered different brands in order to target a broad market of incomes and preferences. In 1904, he invested in the Buick brand and used the 1 profits to buy out future automobile companies. Durant purchased Olds Motor Works, the first automobile company in Michigan and then Cadillac from Henry Leland, who previously reorganized the Henry Ford Company when Henry Ford resigned. Cadillac produced automobiles similar to Henry Ford’s Model A using methods of mass production Ford left behind. By 1910, Durant was forced to step down as management of General Motors. Abstract: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers 1905-2011 contain his extensive research files, photographs, and prints on a wide variety of automotive topics. The papers reflect the complexity and breadth of Ludvigsen’s work as an author, researcher, and consultant. Approximately 70,000 of his photographic negatives have been digitized and are available on the Revs Digital Library. Thousands of undigitized prints in several series are also available but the copyright of the prints is unclear for many of the images.
