Historical Marker - L343 - William C. Durant / Durant-Dort Carriage Company (Marker ID#:L343) Front - Title/Description William C. Durant William Crapo Durant (1861-1947), one of Flint’s most important historical figures, was a pioneer in the development of the American auto industry. Durant’s vehicle ventures began in 1886, when, with a borrowed fifteen hundred dollars, he bought the rights to build a two-wheeled road cart. Nine years later the Flint Road Cart Company, begun by Durant and his partner, Dallas Dort, became the Durant-Dort Carriage Company. Durant took over Flint’s tiny Buick Motor Company Significant Date: in 1904. He turned it into the largest American Civil War and After (1860-1875) producer of automobiles by 1908, and, on Buick’s Registry Year: 1974 Erected Date: 1978 success, founded General Motors in September of that year. Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History 1908 General Motors is formed William Durant combined Buick, Olds, Cadillac, Elmore and Oakland to create what is now General Motors Incorporated. Durant offered different brands in order to target a broad market of incomes and preferences. In 1904, he invested in the Buick brand and used the 1 profits to buy out future automobile companies. Durant purchased Olds Motor Works, the first automobile company in Michigan and then Cadillac from Henry Leland, who previously reorganized the Henry Ford Company when Henry Ford resigned. Cadillac produced automobiles similar to Henry Ford’s Model A using methods of mass production Ford left behind. By 1910, Durant was forced to step down as management of General Motors. 1953 Willys Cars Described
1953 WILLYS CARS DESCRIBED GENERAL: Willys-Overland expanded the Aero line in 1953 but made only minor appearance changes from the 1952 models. They included red-painted wheel cover emblems and a gold-plated 'W' in the center of the grille, the latter symbolizing the firm's 50th anniversary. The Aero o-Wing nameplate was replaced with "Aero o-Falcon". Significantly, a new four-door sedan was developed for the Lark, Falcon and Ace lines. On April 29, 1953, Willys-Overland, Inc., was acquired by the Henry J. Kaiser Co. for approximately $60 million. The name of the company was then changed to Willys Motors, Inc. The new company, now a Toledo, Ohio based Kaiser-Willys Sales Corporation, then sold the Kaiser-Frazer plant at Willow Run, Michigan to General Motors. All production, including Kaisers and Frazers, was shifted to the Willys plant at Toledo. WILLYS LARK - The Lark Series was again the base trim level. It was identified by "Lark" on the trunk lid. It used the Lightning Six, L-head engine and had unadorned rubber windshield moldings around the two-piece windshield. WILLYS HEAVY DUTY - The Heavy Duty Aero was essentially a taxi cab version with components replaced with stronger pieces for fleet use. WILLYS FALCON - The Falcon was the intermediate trim level and was identified by the word "Falcon" on the trunk lid. The Falcon used the Hurricane Six F-head six-cylinder engine. It featured chrome windshield moldings around its two-piece windshield. WILLYS ACE - The Ace was the top trim level and included the words "Custom Ace" on the trunk lid.
