Suite for Viola Alone The American Viola Society suite for viola alone Quincy Porter (1897-1966) AVS Publications 008 Preface The American composer Quincy Porter (1897–1966) completed his Suite for Viola Alone on October 15, 1930, during a three-year stay in Paris funded by a Guggenheim Fellowship. Porter premiered the work at a critically successful recital devoted to his music at the Salle Chopin on February 18, 1931; this concert greatly furthered his reputation as both a composer and violist. After his return to the United States, Porter held teaching and administrative posts at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Vassar, the New England Conservatory of Music, and Yale. Highly committed to the development and promotion of American music, Porter was among a group of composers who co-founded the American Music Center (Aaron Copland and Howard Hanson were two of his notable colleagues in this endeavor). While Porter’s music exhibits a twentieth- century tonality, he eschewed many of the avant-garde experiments of his fellow composers and focused on writing well-crafted music in traditional forms. The Suite for Viola Alone is a model of Porter’s superb compositional craftsmanship: idiomatically written for the viola, the suite’s four tightly constructed movements display a mixture of styles and harmonic consonance and dissonance. The first movement, Lento, explores the viola’s color palette and leads directly into the frenetic Allegro furioso, with a pulsating rhythmic drive that suggests a locomotive. The lyrical third movement, Larghetto espressivo, is a calm and serene moment of repose before the boisterous Allegro spiritoso, an impressive feat of fiddling that reveals Porter’s American roots. He was the son and grandson of professors at Yale and himself graduated from that institution, a pupil of the redoubtable Horatio Parker. Later he studied in Paris with Lucien Capet (violin) and Vincent d’Indy (composition), and upon returning to New York, with Ernest Bloch. During this period he earned his living as a violinist in the Capitol Theater Orchestra. He followed Bloch to the Cleveland Institute of Music and held a teaching post there. A Guggenheim grant took Porter back to Paris for another three years, where he composed his first mature works. After a brief return to Cleveland, he taught for six years at Vassar College, and then moved to the New England Conservatory of Music. In 1946, he accepted a professorship at the Yale School of Music which he held until his retirement in 1965. Among Quincy Porter’s last professional acts before his sudden death in November 1966 was to voice enthusiastic approval of the completed recording of the enclosed Harpsichord Concerto. It was during the 1928–31 Paris period that Quincy Porter’s musical language took definitive shape.

Hired under the leadership of Mstislav Rostropovich, he is currently a member of the National Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Honigberg has given recent recitals in Washington DC at the Dumbarton Concert Series, at the Phillips Collection, at the National Gallery of Art, and recitals in New York and throughout the United States. In Chicago (his home town) he has appeared on radio WFMT, at the Ravinia Festival, and as soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Ars Viva Orchestra, Lake Forest Symphony and New Philharmonic Orchestra among others. In October 2014 Honigberg performed Andrzej Panufnik’s Cello Concerto with conductor Marek Mos in Warsaw, Poland.     i Abstract (Re)Examining narratives: Personal style and the viola works of Quincy Porter (1897–1966) By Aaron Daniel Conitz The American composer Quincy Porter (1897–1966) is primarily remembered for his achievements and contributions as a member of the academy and, as a result, his music has largely been cast in the shadows. His compositional style is frequently described as “personal” or “highly individual,” particularly in reference to his works of chamber music, specifically those for string instruments. Porter was a fine violist who performed throughout his professional career in solo recitals and chamber ensembles; these experiences directly influenced his composition. Reexamining Porter’s narrative through the lens of his works for viola reveals a more nuanced perspective of the individual, one that more effectively conveys his personal style through the instrument he played. This body of repertoire forms a unique sector of his oeuvre: the works are valuable for the violist in their idiomatic qualities and compositional appeal, yet also display the composer’s voice at its finest. This document will present the works Porter originally wrote for viola (no transcriptions) as a valuable contribution to the repertory of 20th century American viola music. The works will be presented in chronological fashion and explore analytical aspects, stylistic concerns, historical context, and performance practice.     CRI 118 QUINCY PORTER String Quartet No. 8 The Stanley Quartet of the University of Michigan Gilbert Ross, Emil Raab, violins Robert Courte, viola — Oliver Edel, ’cello QUINCY PORTER is a real Connecticut Yankee who first saw the light of day in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1897. A direct descendant of the great New England divine Jonathan Edwards, and son and grandson of Yale professors, Porter himself graduated from Yale in 1919, and from the Yale School of Music where he studied with Parker and Smith, in 1921. He continued work in composition with Vincent D’Indy and later with Bloch at the Cleveland Institute, where he became Bloch’s assistant, and later still Director of the Department of Theory. This composer has been Professor of Music at Vassar College, Dean of the New England Conservatory, and since 1946, a professor at Yale University, where he still is: He has been active as a chamber music performer all his life, his instrument being the viola. He is a Fellow of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, has been commissioned by the Coolidge Foundation (Library of Congress) and has enjoyed many prizes and awards, among them a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Pulitzer Prize. Porter’s works include a Symphony and other large orchestral pieces, the incidental music for several plays, and a big batch of chamber works, in which medium — particularly that of the string quartet — he has achieved a rather special reputation. Quincy Porter composed his Eighth String Quartet at his ‘music hut’ on Squam Lake and in his studio in New Haven in the spring of 1950.

A student of Aaron Copland, Howard Hanson, Roy Harris, and Quincy Porter, a teacher to Ben Johnston, Christopher Rouse, and Steven Stucky, he got good reviews, he was admired by his Rpeers, he was published and recorded, and for all of that, he has nevertheless fallen into obscurity. When Copland singled out seven young American composers “as representative of some of the best we have to offer among the new generation” in the pages of the New York Times Magazine—the other six being Alexei Haieff, Harold Shapero, Lukas Foss, Leonard Bernstein, William Bergsma, and John Cage—Palmer was already, Copland points out, the oldest, and also “perhaps the least well known.” He goes on: In recent years too much of his energy has gone into his teaching at Cornell University, but teaching is a familiar disease of the American composer. Thus far in his career Palmer has enjoyed little public acclaim; nevertheless, if he has the capacity to endure and to develop, his future seems to me assured.1 It wasn’t. Raised on Mozart and Rachmaninoff, ambitious to know everything, I'd buy any record by a composer I'd never heard of, figuring most such names were 20th century. And after a while I realized that most of the composers I'd never heard of were on a label called CRI— Composers Recordings Incorporated. I got to where I'd buy anything on CRI. So when rumors started circulating that CRI was about to close down, and the confirmation came last week, it knocked the breath out of me—like a piece of my childhood taken away. The company had been founded in 1954 by composers Otto Luening and Douglas Moore and arts administrator Oliver Daniel. In the early days I found Cage's on that label, with Maro Ajemian playing—a crucial recording. I found Henry Brant's , most of the Dane Rudhyar recordings, lots of Ralph Shapey. Loads of historical stuff otherwise forgotten: the Quincy Porter "Elegiac" Quintet, the excellent Piano Concerto by the sadly neglected Ben Weber, all of the available Wallingford Riegger recordings, Robert Ward's opera .

  • Speed Etude for Viola and Piano
    The American Viola Society speed etude for viola and piano Quincy Porter (1897-1966) AVS Publications 007 Preface In 1947, the American composer Quincy Porter (1897–1966) received a commission from Juilliard president William Schuman to “compose a work of moderate difficulty, with piano accompaniment, for each of the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, and contrabass,” as well as a string quintet.1 These pieces were intended to remedy a situation in which a student was forced “to devote his skills to music largely of inferior quality, until he reached the degree of proficiency necessary to perform the masterpieces of the literature,” while also serving to “acquaint the younger student with the techniques and styles of the contemporary idiom.”2 A violist himself, Porter was well-suited for such a commission. For his viola selection, Porter composed the swift and nimble Speed Etude, a perpetuum mobile that appropriately flies by in about two and a half minutes. Completed in 1948, Speed Etude was “written for and dedicated to Paul Doktor with gratitude for the glorious first performance of my viola concerto.”3 This AVS edition is made possible by the generosity of the Quincy Porter estate. One subject will be a more detailed account of the Harvard Orchestra than appeared in Bulletin No. 5. For general purposes that historical account may be sufficient. On the other hand, certain written material exists not included in that bulletin which, for the purpose of record, should appear in print, less perishable than the drying, cracking pages and fading ink of old, written manuscripts. There will be other subjects, some now foreseen, others probably to appear when the time comes. The list of accessions alone would be reason for at least a leaflet. The chief reason for publishing these bulletins, as the writer has stated, is to record those facts which are of historical value and which, incidentally, at some future time may be the source for a more ambitious publication.
