Boomer Reporting Corps FALL 2012 Workshop Instructors

MIKE LANGE is a semi-retired journalist with more than 25 years experience in print media and 10 years in radio broadcasting. After relocating to in 1972 from upstate New York, Lange was hired as the news director of WGHM radio in Skowhegan, the predecessor of WSKW and WTOS. He later spent seven years with WKTJ in Farmington before accepting the managing editor’s position at the Norway Advertiser- Democrat and — a few years later — the Somerset Reporter in Skowhegan, both owned by James Newspapers Inc. Lange later held a variety of positions at the Morning Senti- nel, including general assignment reporter, motorsports columnist and special sections writer. He later went back to his weekly “roots” to manage the Moosehead Messenger in Greenville and the Sebasticook Valley Weekly and Somerset Times, based in Newport and Skowhegan. He still contributes articles to Maine Today Media’s special sections and advertising supple- ments. Lange has been active in several organizations including the Maine Press Association, the Skowhegan- Madison Elks Lodge, the Corinna American Legion Post and the Meridian Masonic Lodge in Pittsfield. He is also a Red Cross blood drive volunteer.

ANTHONY RONZIO is director of Sun Media Group New Media Department head- quartered in Lewiston. This new position is responsible for growing Sun Media Group’s online offerings for the benefit of readers and advertisers. Ronzio leads this effort across all Sun Media Group properties. One of Maine’s oldest, locally-owned media compa- nies, Sun Media Group publishes the Sun Journal, The Forecaster, The Bethel Citizen, Norway Advertiser-Democrat, Rumford Falls-Times, Franklin Journal, Livermore Falls Advertiser, Rangeley Highlander, Penobscot Times and Employment Times, as well as Mainehomeseller.net and Myjobwave.com. Prior to rejoining Sun Media Group, Ronzio, of Hallowell, was editor and publisher of two Maine daily newspapers: the of Augusta and the of Waterville. He was the editorial page editor of the Sun Journal from 2006 through 2009, during which time he earned state and regional awards for his writing and reporting. A native of Rhode Island, Ronzio has been working in print and online journalism in Maine since 2001. He is a 2001 graduate of Syracuse University, where he earned bachelor’s degrees in maga- zine journalism and history, and is the former president and current treasurer and legislative affairs chairman for the Maine Press Association.

BILL KUYKENDALL serves as Senior Lecturer in New Media and Cooperating Profes- sor of Communication and Journalism at the University of Maine in Orono. From 2000 to 2004, he served as Libra Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and Director of New Media at the University of Maine. During spring of 2009 he served as Shott Professor of Journalism at the P. I. Reed School of Journalism, while on sab- batical leave from UMaine. Kuykendall holds an MA in Mass Communications from the University of Minnesota and a BA in Zoology from West Virginia University. Before join- ing UMaine, he taught and newspaper management and directed the annual Pictures of the Year contest and Photo Workshop at the Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia. He helped found and lead photojournalism workshops in Bulgaria in 1991 and in Bulgaria and Hungary in 1992 and was a faculty member on the University of Miami

He is a recipient of the Newspaper Picture Editor of the Year award and Robin F. Garland Teacher of the Year awards from the National Press Photographers Association and the Gold Quill award from the International Association of Business Communicators.Kuykendall does documentary photography on a variety of topics, has conducted new media workshops for the public in Bangor and Milo, Maine and on selected islands in the Gulf of Maine, and has served as Workshop Director and Weekly Newspaper Mentor for the WVUncovered Multimedia Journalism initiative of WVU’s Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism.

Jennifer Smith-Mayo is a professional photographer specializing in photography of fine dining, rural living, and farming in the , the United Kingdom, Ireland and Italy. She is co-author, with her husband, writer Matthew P. Mayo, of the books Maine Icons, New Hampshire Icons, and Vermont Icons. She also photo- graphed Sandra Oliver’s recently published book, Maine Home Cooking. Jennifer’s work is regularly featured in Down East magazine and has also appeared in Yankee, Big Sky Journal, Western Art & Architecture, , , Wine Spectator, and other publications. Recently, her work has taken her to such far-flung locales as the Congo and Brazil to shoot video for two award-winning Eddie Siebert S.J./Loyola Productions, Inc. documentary projects. She holds an MA in liberal studies with a concentration in New Media, and works as an adjunct instructor for the University of Maine and for Senior College at the Belfast Hutchinson Center.
