European Veteran Records 2004 .31.12..2004 1 EUROPEAN VETERAN RECORDS 2004 .31.12..2004 Compiled by Ivar Söderlind, statistican of EVAA When two or more results are noted in one age group and event the first noted result is the official record. I have noted if the European Records in this list are Official World Records or better than the Official World Records. In 1999 and 2000 we have new javelins in many age groups. In the Recordlists I will present the records with the new javelin and also the old records with the old javelin if they are better than the new ones. In 2000 we also have the new hurdle height 68.6 cm for short and long hurdles in the oldest age groups. The old records with hurdle height 76.2 cm will be left up until it is better results with the lower hurdles. In some Champion Ships wind-gauge has been used but in the official result lists it was only noted if the wind was correct or not. (c = correct wind; up to 2.0 m/sec). All new records must be reported by a Record Application (preferably EVAA:s or WAVA:s Record Application)!! * = modified or new record 2003 and 2004 * New Record 2004 Welcome to the Official EVAA Web • A (Very Personal) History of Barnet and District AC
A (very personal) history of Barnet and District AC In early 2017 the club magazine Editor wrote to me, saying: “I'd like there to be some things in the next issue relating to the club's 50 anniversary/history etc. Would you be able/willing to contribute something?” Without hesitation I said yes, and here it is. I have chosen to write three parallel intertwined stories. They are the main points in the development of the club in the early years, illustrated with some results and reports from those days from the relevant club magazines, and interspersed with some observations on my own short running career once I arrived on the scene (thankfully for you that was not until 1982!). There are thousands of results and reports, and I have tried to select items of interest and/or relevance. I have tried to not dwell on, or comment too often on, the ‘but things were different/better in them days’ aspect of athletics. I leave you to interpret the content as you wish. Considerable license has been taken in editing down mag reports to their core detail. STEVE CHILTON (with thanks to Brian Fowler and all the club magazine editors) 1 Early days Barnet and District AC was formed in 1967, after a merger of Hampstead Harriers with Barnet AC. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find copies of the club mags from the years before 1974, so the first 6 years are something of a mystery (I copied all Brian Strong’s club mags from 1973 onwards a while ago, at the time I was editor, as he was editor for many of the early years).

  • Barnsley 6 1981
Barnsley 6 1981 The whole town’s talking about the Jones boy, but glory goes to… Aldershot and Farnham’s Bernie Ford resisted a strong challenge from the emerging Terry Colton of Wolverhampton A.C. to win Sunday’s Barnsley Six as thrilling a finish as one could wish to see. Yet it came as something of an anti-climax, Steve Jones having already gate-crashed the party by racing across the finishing line in a new record time of 30 mins 9 secs. Jones, the 26-year-old R.A.F. competitor from the Bristol club, arrived at the scene in the early afternoon intending to watch a friend, Alan Cole, from Swansea. But he was swept along by the big-race atmosphere, and despite the reservations of the promoting club officials, he was eventually given permission to run by referee Stan Smith, on the understanding that he would not be allowed to compete for any of the prizes. But it was obvious that an international of such quality – Jones outclassed the runners at Gateshead last month – was bound to be a strong contender even in such a competitive field, and there was no doubt that his unofficial success rubbed some of the gloss off Ford’s win. Ford himself was critical of Jones’s decision to run when he spoke to the Chronicle after the race: “Steve’s presence certainly took the edge off the race, and devalued it for me”, he said. “He must have known the deadline for entries before he came and should have accepted it.
