The Center Theatre opened its doors to the Foxcroft Academy players who performed in two one-act comedies over several nights last fall. With these shows, Foxcroft Academy continued it’s partnership with Center Theatre, an ideal setting offering modern and professional facilities and staff to area students. The skills developed in the one acts helped students understand many of the fundamentals of performance. Working closely with professionals, students delved into script analysis, character development, blocking, design, and much more. As a team, the students transformed twenty pages of script buried in a dark closet into a half-hour belly laugh the whole community enjoyed. Schubert’s Last Serenade, a short existentialist comedy about falling in love, was narrated by the maitre’d of a French restaurant (John Levenseller ’11) and featured the famed composer and violinist, Franz Schubert (Tom Fearon ’09). Also featured in these performances were Vanessa Cousins ’11, Seth Clarke ’10, Molly Rose Cyr ’09, and Hadi el-Rabbat ’10. Thoughts on Feeding the Chickens and Other Country Pleasures By Xiaotong Duan ’10 Living with a host family is totally different from living at home. Sometimes it can be difficult. But I have to say that I am really lucky. I have an excellent and very interesting host family. They raise horses and chickens and have two cats and a dog. I love them all. In the morning we pick fresh eggs from the chicken barn and feed the horses. Doing these chores has taught me quite a bit about chickens and horses. I feel like I am on vacation all the time. Sometimes I think this kind of life is even better than living in a big city like Beijing where I lived for 16 years. There is no time on the farm to take a rest. Another challenge is getting along with your host parents. My host parents are really nice and I like living with them. By the way, they also make great meals. Also, because I had a host family before I came here, I knew what to do. Respect people and they will respect you. I have learned so much, not just at school, but also outside of school. I have learned how to get along with people, how to make friends, and how to adjust to the lifestyle of others. These are all challenges for me. But, I am getting used to everything. I enjoy staying at Foxcroft Academy with all the cold, but fresh air, and with all the singing roosters in the morning and the nice people who now have become my lifelong friends. Xiaotong Duan, from Beijing, China, is 17 years old. She goes by the name of Tong. She lives in Sebec with her host parents Jayne Lello, Assistant Librarian at Foxcroft Academy, and her husband songwriter and singer David Mallett. Tong’s parents work in military medicine in China. Tong was an exchange student in Finland before arriving in America last year. She has been at Foxcroft Academy one semester, but hopes to stay in the U.S. through college and, perhaps, beyond.
