March 2017 Vol 8, Issue 3 China receives its largest foreign drone order

An undisclosed buyer has placed the largest overseas or- der for China’s home-developed military drones, the Xin- hua news agency has reported, in a boost for the Chinese arms industry’s efforts to increase export volumes. The order for the Wing Loong II was placed before the next-generation unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) suc- cessfully completed its maiden flight, Xinhua said late on Monday, citing the system’s developer Chengdu Aircraft Design and Research Institute. It did not identify the buyer or the size of the order. The Wing Loong II, which has wingspan of more than 20 metres (65 feet), is a medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV that has both reconnaissance and strike capabilities. It conducted a 31-minute flight for the first time on Mon- day after taking off from a runway in western China. “Its flight marks China’s new generation reconnaissance and strike UAV. Muhammad Ali Jr., son of the legendary boxing champion Muhammad Ali, was de- tained by immigration officials at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport for hours on Feb. 7, according to several reports.

Ali Jr., 44, was traveling with his mother, Khalilah Camacho-Ali, to Florida from a speaking engagement in Montego Bay, Jamaica, according to the Courier-Journal.

Keith E. Smith, a spokesman for the Florida division of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, declined to comment on the incident, writing in a statement to PEOPLE: “Due to the restrictions of the Privacy Act, U.S. Customs and Border Protection cannot discuss individual travelers; however, all international travelers arriving in the U.S. are subject to CBP inspection.” The Courier-Journal reported that the Alis were taken aside because of their “- sounding names,” according to their family friend and lawyer, Chris Mancini, who spoke to the outlet.

Mancini claimed that officials held and questioned Ali Jr. for nearly two hours, repeat- edly asking him, “Where did you get your name from?” and “Are you Muslim?” accord- ing to the Courier-Journal.

The actor’s last outing at the Box Office was ‘Katti Batti’ alongside Kangana Ranaut that released in 2015. The film’s performance at the Box Office was a dud, and post that Imran had not had an outing on the silver screen. However, with reports of Imran planning to direct doing rounds, it was being touted that Imran will join hands with uncle Aamir Khan on a project. But, there was no confirmation of any sorts on it. And now, a leading tabloid report suggests that Imran is looking out for a producer to produce his first directorial. According to the tabloid, Imran met a few producers including Atul Kasbekar, but there hasn’t been any luck for the star as yet. He also met another producer who asked Imran to rework on the script, and Imran has already started making changes. However, he has not yet managed to find himself a taker, and thus his project has been apparently sidelined. MARCH 2017 www.Asia Times.US PAGE 29
