Redevelopment is one of the most effective ways to breathe new life into deteriorated areas plagued by social, physical, environmental or economic conditions which act as a barrier to new investment by private enterprise. The goal within the redevelopment area is to reverse and eliminate conditions leading to blight by encouraging new invest- ment, job creation and retention, business development and property rehabilitation. Buena Park has supported major projects with Agency funds including: ■ Rehabilitation of the Mall including the Krikorian Theatres, Walmart, DSW Shoes, John’s Incredible Pizza, and Portillos; ■ Expansion of the Auto Center including Shelly BMW, House of Imports, Buena Park Toyota, Buena Park Honda, Simpson Buick GMC, and CarMax; ■ Development of the Target Shopping Center at Beach and Orangethorpe; ■ Redevelopment of the shopping centers on the northeast and north- west corners of Lincoln Avenue and Valley View Street that includes Albertsons, Marshalls, JoAnn Fabrics, and Ross; ■ Construction of a 150 unit Dorado Senior Apartments that are all affordable to low and very low income seniors; and ■ Development of 86 single family homes at University Gables and 350 homes at Lakeside projects. Agency-funded public improvement projects include reconstruction of Lincoln Avenue, Knott Avenue, Auto Center Drive, and La Palma, Stanton and Dale Street around the Mall. Agency-funded public facilities include the police station, senior center, and junior high gymnasium. These proj- ects have generated thousands of jobs in the community and generate taxes to help pay for police, fi re, and park services. Work on the new Community Center project, the Beach and Orangetho- rpe mixed-use project, Entertainment District revitalization, Stanton and Orangethorpe mixed-use project, Auto Center expansion, former Nabis- co site, as well as multiple affordable housing projects are still underway and will continue to create additional jobs in the community. New Street Sweeping Signs to be More Visible The City is in the process of updating hundreds of street sweeping signs to enhance visibility, especially during night time hours. Street sweeping signs are located at the beginning of a street or tract of homes so they are easily seen when a driver or pedestrian fi rst enters the area. Some signs, due to aging of the materials and fonts used, are diffi cult to read and will be replaced over the next year to help ensure drivers and pedestrians can clearly read them, day or night. The cost of the project is estimated to be approximately $7,900, using City forces to install the new signs. 35 California Welcome Center Opens this Summermer The City of Buena Park will soon become a central stopping point for those looking ttoo totourur some of California’s greatest hotspots. Earlier this year, representatives with the Califor-CaC lifor- nia Tour and Travel Council (CTTC), in cooperation with the State of California, awardedarded the Buena Park Convention & Visitors Bureau the honor of housing the only Californiafornia Welcome Center in Orange County. The California Welcome Center will be located at the historic Stage Stop Hotel,l, at 6601 Beach Blvd. in Buena Park. The Center will offer concierge services by providinging brochures from throughout the State, as well as offer reservation services, internetnet access, regional and California merchandise, as well as attraction ticket sales. Part of the excitement of opening the Center is that it will be housed in the 135-year-r- old Stage Stop Hotel. The building will receive minor improvements such as paintt and lighting. In order to better accommodate the thousands of tourists anticipatedd visiting the Center each year, as well as protect an important historic resource, the City has also acquired the adjacent 105-year-old historic Tice House property and parking area. Future plans for the Tice House may include a small café or another tourist-orient- ed business. The City is also discussing use of the parking lot next to the Tice Housee oownedwwnneded by Ganahl Lumber to provide better access and circulation to the Welcome Center from Beach Blvd. The California Welcome Center grand opening is scheduled for July 16th. The Center will be open 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please contact Sara Copping, Director, Buena Park Convention & Visitors Bureau, (714) 562-3560
