Franetic again shut down the Power’s prospects of victory with a brilliant game in his new midfi eld role in another thriller. Chargers’ coach Justin Wenke has pushed Franetic into the midfi eld although he’s moving him forward for periods. As Oakleigh emerged with a fi ve-point win against Gippsland in its Round 2 clash, Franetic was awarded the maximum TAC Cup Coaches Award votes. Franetic gathered 26 possessions, nine hand ball receives, laid fi ve tackles, grabbed four marks and capped off his dominant game with two goals. The new role sits well with Franetic, who enjoys his forays forward. “I’ve been happy I’ve been able to hit the score board this year in most games,” Franetic said.

Bowlers can’t get the ball past his blazing bat and “I’m hoping to run out the season better this year,” football opponents can’t keep the ball out of his hands. Merrett said.

Western Jets and he’s been made a quick and seamless transition from cricket to football. “I’d love to play for Vic Country and really just enjoy my Sandringham coach Justin Plapp described as footy,” Merrett said. “scintillating” the opening to the football season by And, we’ve seen what happens when Merrett enjoys his Merrett. sport. It followed on from an APS XI season where he scored 487 runs and that was just from 10 games!

Initially, Merrett was in Geelong Falcons’ squad last year, but when he began to board at Melbourne Grammar he switched over to the Dragons as the travelling made it impossible for him to commute to and from Geelong for training.

What particularly impresses Plapp is the high effi ciency rate Merrett runs at with his disposals. “It’s somewhere in the 90s,” enthused the Dragons coach.

“He’s a highly talented left footer. He’s been playing half forward and rolling through the midfi eld,” Plapp said.

“Zach has explosive speed, has really good lateral vision and makes really good decisions. He’s pretty exciting.”

As the Dragons slugged out a draw, Merrett emerged as the recipient of the most votes in the TAC Cup Coaches Award votes.

Merrett collected 17 possessions, took seven handballs received, grabbed six marks and affected four tackles.

And, by his own admission, Merrett said he’s not near his peak fi tness.

He is fantastic in one-on-one contests and he is such a versatile player who can play down back and in the midfi eld and I’m sure if we threw him down forward he could kick some goals for us as well.” Certainly, Iaccarino’s experience and physical strength has been telling in the early stages of the season. “It was good to get a win over our rivals Calder and also get a few possessions at the same time,” Iaccarino said. “I was fortunate enough for some of my teammates to win the ball and feed it out to me. I’ve got them to thank.” Not to mention the Jets’ hierarchy who believed in him to give him another TAC Cup season.
