Members and non members welcome to compete or to listen 2018 Committee Test Piece: a March, Strathspey and Reel each of at least 4 parts. Competitors are to submit two sets of tunes of which the judge will Maurie DeHayr choose one (Patron) Prizes: 1st: Patron's Trophy and $100, 2nd $50, 3rd $30 Andrew Roach (President) Entries by email to [email protected], phone to 07 3397 4512 or before 7.00 on the night Alex McConnell (Secretary/Treasurer) Admission: $5 Jim Allan Donald Galloway Due to the disruption over the last few months, we have rearranged our program a bit so that we will run the Patron's Trophy this month and have the Jimmy Durham Memorial at the September meeting.

The Patron's trophy will not be a sponsored competition this year so we will revert to our previous format, but hopefully the sponsored format will be back bigger and better next year. Details for this year are above. Congratulations to Scots PGC College who are now back from , having secured 6th place in Novice Juvenile B in the European Championships, as well as a 4th in Grade 4B at Lochore and a 10th in Grade 4B at Edinburgh. Our best wishes go with Brisbane Boys College and Murrumba and Contact District in their ventures to Scotland. BBC are in Novice Juvenile A and Murrumba in Grade 4A at the Worlds. Also watch for BBC playing at Q.H.P.S. Inc the Tattoo. 13 Avesnes Street HOLLAND PARK 4121 Alex McConnell, Secretary Secretary: A J McConnell Email: [email protected] 07 3397 4512 July 2018 QHPS

June Meeting Calendar

Jul 23 Patron's Trophy We had a very quiet meeting for June with only about eight people being able to make it, following on all the activity that had been Aug 27 Open Pipers Night happening around the Championships and with the upcoming overseas Sep 24 Jimmy Durham Memorial trips of Scots PGC College, Brisbane Boys College, Murrumba Pipes Oct 27 (Sat) Julie Appleton and Drums and a number of individuals. Seymour Memorial Contest We sat around for a while and had a general chat about piping and the Emmanual College UQ Society, including some ideas for the future. Nov 26 Jack McCandlish However, we were fortunate that Laurie Nicol had brought his pipes and Memorial Contest was persuaded to play at some length I think we must have heard most of his repertoire! Laurie is currently playing with the BBC Old Collegians All meetings on Monday nights at and taking lessons from Rob Roy MacGregor. He has supplied a list of Walrus Bar, Regatta Hotel, the tunes he played (not necessarily complete or in strict order) so you Toowong except as specified. can see what a varied performance we were fortunate to hear. He started off playing a little carefully but as he warmed up the music Piobaireachd Group flowed. His list of tunes was: She moved through the fair, The Fair Maid of Aug 5 Barra, The Keel Row, Braes of Mar, The Blackberry Bush, Knightswood Ceilidh, Susan Macleod, Alick C Macgregor, Carradale Sep 9 Bay, Donald Maclean's Farewell to Oban, Train Journey North, Lucy Oct 7 Cassidy, The Seagull, Rabs Wedding, Donald Maclean of Lewis, Mrs Nov 4 Recital Day Lily Christie, Dora Macleod, The Little Cascade, Royal Scottish Dec 2 Pipers Society, Donald Maclean, The Whitby Runaround, Boolavogue, Field of Gold (Piobaireachd), Calliope House, Kenneth Meetings at Ipswich Thistle Band MacDonald, Allan MacPherson of Mosspark, Wee Michael's March, Hall, Lion Street, Ipswich except Castle Dangerous, JK Cairns, Balmoral. for recital day which will be at Rochedale High School Do you have pipes you want to sell?

We regularly get requests from people looking for a good instrument, especially an older one. If you have one that is surplus to requirements, just email us on [email protected] or ring 07 3397 4512 with the details and we will see if we can put you in contact with a potential buyer. We can also advertise them in the newsletter (free for members).

The May meeting of the group was held in the Ipswich Band’s Hall on Sunday the 6th with a minimal attendance owing to several of our senior members attending the R.U.Brown competition in Adelaide where Ross Campbell came 3rd in the Clasp and Mark McKenzie took 3rd place in the Gold medal event.. First up we were given a good display of the facilities electronically and security wise (think of it and its there) David Mariner opened the morning session with a good rendition of Donald MacLeod’s Cabar Feidh Du Brath which led to some discussion of the tune and the reason for its title. Seemingly the talk gave David some relaxation as he then played Struan Robertson’s Salute his pipe sounding good and steady in the hall. Morning tea over Maurie De Hayr decided to give a short talk regarding the “History of tunes” as there are often several stories, he talked of those related to MacIntosh’s Lament and following played the Ground and 1st Variation of the tune.. Bruce Macleod followed with a solid performance of The Company’s Lament thus leading us to the conclusion of the meeting.
