A COMMUNITY SAFETY STRATEGY

John R Hosie OUR PLACE & TAMFOURHILL : TAMFORURHILL COMMUNITY HUB

CAMELON & TAMFOURHILL WILL BE A SAFER, HAPPIER, AND MORE ATTRACTIVE PLACE TO LIVE.

The Context and process for agreeing our community safety strategy

The process for confirming this community safety strategy has been focussed upon identifying the communities’ priorities and aspirations for making their community a safer, happier, and more attractive place to live. The resultant strategy represents the voice of local people and this has been set within the wider national context and with an awareness of the central driving forces and policy targets of our main partners.

The methodology of the community consultation period involved: a detailed survey, 1-1 interviews, Focus groups and meetings with key stakeholders and partners. The approach sought to emulate the Scottish Community Safety Networks Manifesto 2021 assertion that: Communities will be safer if there is more involvement of people in communities in the planning, delivery, and development of the services that they use. This is often referred to as co-production but additionally this document should be viewed as a community development and engagement framework where the key outcomes are underpinned by the notion of community empowerment and capacity building.

The strategy document has been mindful of the current work being undertaken by the Community Planning Partnership and the emerging 10-year Falkirk Plan, and there is an awareness that Falkirk Councils long term planning processes can be a facilitator and enabler of our local community action plans. This community safety strategy can therefore work in full alignment with the local authorities’ wider contexts and contribute to the ’s National Performance Framework: We live in communities that are inclusive, empowered, resilient and safe.

This local strategy is intended to be organic and fluid, it is a framework and the starting point of our community engagement activities; agencies and partner organisations are required to respond to their potential roles within each of the key outcomes, the success of the strategy being reliant upon our local activities being effectively aligned to both local and national government strategies and policies.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the various community groups, individuals and organisations for being open and welcoming and ever prepared to meet with me (virtually) to discuss issues and share experiences. Thanks also to my colleagues at Our Place Camelon and Tamfourhill, I have appreciated your positive feedback, encouragement and keeping me on the right track.
