More than 200 members of the Popper/Abeles/Ekstein/Brok family gathered at Temple Anshe Sholom for a grand celebration of the family’s escape and how they flourished in their adopted homeland. A Future for Israeli-Palestinian Peacebuilding
Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre A future for Israeli-Palestinian peacebuilding Ned Lazarus July 2017 The Israel-Palestine conflict is one of the most heavily researched in the world. Yet a shockingly small fraction of this research focuses on the millions of Israelis and Palestinians who share this land, their relations with one another, and how such relations could be improved so that a breakthrough might be possible. This report is both timely and necessary, and can hopefully provide a blueprint for greater international support of civil society efforts to foster conflict resolution. John Lyndon Executive Director of OneVoice Europe and Research Fellow at Kings College London BICOM, the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre, is an independent British think tank producing research and analysis to increase understanding of Israel and the Middle East in the UK. This Is Your Life®
Rabbi Meir Salasnik THIS IS YOUR LIFE® Colosseum Theatre, Watford Sunday July 17th 2016 Chairman’s Welcome Dear guests, I cannot take credit for this wonderful celebration tonight. That has to go to Adrian Cohen, Nigel Rothband and their TIYL committee. From the germ of an idea that they presented to Rabbi Salasnik and the Board of Management in May last year, to what you are about to witness this evening, everything has been put together by this small, dedicated group of members - hopefully without Rabbi Salasnik being too aware of what they have been planning and to whom they have been speaking. I know that a constant refrain, during script meetings, would often be: “But what if the date is wrong and Rabbi Salasnik corrects us?” Programme Tonight everyone is here because they want to show Mincha their appreciation of an extraordinary couple. 6.30 pm (on 1st floor Balcony) You only have to read through the pages of this publication to realise, from the very personal messages within, how Rabbi Salasnik and Judy have touched so many people. Be they Jew or Gentile, everyone and anyone with whom they have celebrated, whom they have helped, advised, mentored, inspired, Rabbi Meir Salasnik ‘This Is Your Life®’ comforted or counselled, felt that they were the only people in their lives. Part 1 (Theatre) Some contributors have opened their hearts and related events about which only their family and Rabbi Salasnik were aware. Interval To the community around him, Rabbi Salasnik is completely religion, culture and colour blind. In his book, the only thing that makes you different from him, is who your third cousin happens to be. -
The Pennsylvania State University Schreyer Honors College
THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE INTERCOLLEGE PROGRAM MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE: CREATING AN OCEANOGRAPHIC GOOGLE EARTH TOUR USING SPREADSHEET MAPPER JONATHAN D. HARTLINE Spring 2011 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Information Sciences and Technology with honors in Environmental Inquiry Reviewed and approved* by the following: Laura Guertin Associate Professor of Earth Science Thesis Supervisor and Honors Adviser Nannette D’Imperio Instructor in Computer Science Thesis Reader * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT Google Earth is free, downloadable software offered by Google that allows people to explore the Earth through satellite imagery. In recent years, Google Earth has been used as a technological tool to teach students in the classroom about varying topics from geography to literature. Google Earth Outreach, Google’s program which supports non-profit organizations, has released Spreadsheet Mapper, a Google spreadsheet which can be used to create and compile more complex Google Earth tours. Four of Spreadsheet Mapper’s default templates were modified to suit the needs of a “choose your own adventure” style oceanographic tour which teaches users about surface ocean currents. The tour follows a branched structure in which the user chooses one of four ocean basins to explore: North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, and South Pacific. Each basin starts with the scenario of throwing a bottle with a message inside into the ocean and tracing its journey through the four major basin-specific surface ocean currents. At the end of each tour is a video which shows users how the bottle traveled on the ocean currents. -
Archaeology and the Bible
Archaeology and the Bible In recent years archaeological discoveries in the Near East, particularly in Palestine, have been related in one way or another to the Bible, often in an effort to prove its historical veracity. But newer field methodologies, regional surveys and creative syntheses have called into question this traditional approach. Archaeology and the Bible examines these new developments and discusses what they imply for biblical studies. The book: • traces the history of the development of Near Eastern archaeology, including the rise and fall of the so-called “biblical archaeology” movement • describes how field archaeology is actually done so that the reader can visualize how archaeological discoveries are made, recorded and studied • recounts the broader prehistorical/archaeological horizon out of which the Bible was born • elucidates how recent archaeological discoveries and theorizing pose serious challenges to the traditional interpretations of such biblical stories as the “Exodus” and the “Conquest” • explores the implications of new developments in the field for understanding Israelite religion. Archaeology and the Bible presents a concise yet comprehensive and accessible introduction to biblical archaeology which will be invaluable to students. John C. H. Laughlin is Professor of Religion and Chairman of the Department of Religion at Averett College. He has excavated at Tel Dan and served as Field Supervisor at the Capernaum excavations. Since 1989, he has been a Field Supervisor at Banias. He has published and lectured widely on the subjects of Near Eastern archaeology and the Bible. Approaching the Ancient World Series editor: Richard Stoneman The sources for the study of the Greek and Roman world are diffuse, diverse, and often complex, and special training is needed in order to use them to the best advantage in constructing a historical picture.
