This generally means that when a Responder, who is not Players have invented almost as many response systems passed hand, bids at the 2-level in a lower ranking suit and to opening strong and artificial 2 ♣ bids as they have to any opponents pass, the auction is forced to the “game-level”. other opening bid. Usually, at least one response, often 2♦, How you and your partner define “game-level” should be is artificial. If you play that 2♦ is semi-automatic, you should discussed. I present the following as a list of reasonable indicate this (“SEMI-AUTO”). If you play that 2 ♦ is used when meanings of “forcing to game” and offer an alternative: Responder has no particular good call, you should probably Absolutely forcing to game: This agreement means use the word “Waiting”. If you play that 2 ♦ always shows a hand that both bidders can bid slowly with confidence that partner that is less than some particular strength (however you define will not pass. Good method for slam bidding. Also good that), you should say “Negative” or “NEG”. None of these method to find the right game ( 3NT or suit). Negative is that agreements requires an alert. This includes “step” systems your original 2-over-1 bid must be really not aggressive with (about which I will say more in a minute) where 2 ♦ always 12-counts. shows the worst hand. Forcing to game or pseudo-game : A pseudo game is If you ask a dozen Bridge teachers, two or three of them will defined as 4♣ or 4♦. Those 2 final contracts are just as hard try to teach you some sort of step responses to an opening 2 ♣ to make as 4♥ or 4♠ but aren’t games. Sometimes the bid. These bids have fallen in and out of favor over the last 50 original 2-over-1 bidder believes that they have enough for years or so. I won't go deeply into the merits (like leaving the game but due to a misfit the only contracts that make are later rounds auction to improve the strain rather than to avoid pseudo-games. bad slams) or demerits (like having the weaker hand play some Forcing to games unless the same player bids a suit contracts in Opener's suit) of these methods. They are 3 times in-a-row: Example: 1♥-(P)- 2♣-( P); 2♥-( P)- 3♣-( P); categorized as to whether they show High Card Points, 2-1 3♦-(P)- 4♣. The original responder bid clubs three times in a points (“Blue Club Team Controls” where aces are counted as row. This pair may have a misfit and 4♣ is the only contract two and kings as one), or whether they endeavor to show that makes. The 4♣ bid is not a closeout and opener may bid specifically which controls are held by Responder. There is also again. Very similar to the pseudo-game above but is more the matter about whether 2NT is skipped, shows some special restrictive. It does add this option. Example: 1♥-(P)- 2♦-(P); hand, or whether the step responses stop at or below 2NT . 2♥-(P)- 3♣-( P); 3♥. The opener bid hearts 3 times in-a-row. Because of all of that variation, simply writing “STEPS” is not This bid can be passed but responder would have to have enough. Instead, say something like “HCP Steps: 2 ♦=0-3 an amazingly bad hand not be able to bid. Optional bids 2♥=4-6 2♠=7-9 2NT =10+”. If you play something more available are 3NT , 3♠, and 4♥. Based on the bidding so far complicated than that, include as much as you can in the space even a ♥2 would be enough to bid 4♥. Some might even provided and leave room for that all important phrase raise with a if they don’t have a spade stopper. “MORE@OCC ” which means that you will continue the rest of A bunch of rules: Mike Lawrence, in his original 2-over- your explanation in the “Other Conventional Calls” Section. 1 book, had a lot of rules on when you could pass short of For natural and weak 2 ♦, 2 ♥, 2 ♠ openers, if basically every game. I don’t like this method. It really isn’t 2-over-1 in my bid except a 3-level bid of Opener's below 3NT is natural and opinion. One exception. 1♦-(P)- 2♣. In this case no major has forcing, you make use the shortcut “Raise is the Only Non- been bid so where is the game? It still might be a major but ” (“RONF”). If 2NT asks for something besides the 3NT seems to be the goal. But if one suit is unstopped then location of outside length or high cards or the rebids show there might not be a game. You could cover for this possible something besides the suit which has that length or high cards, problem by using The 2 nd method above forcing to pseudo you will need to detail what the rebids mean. “OGUST” alone game. isn't adequate. You should define specifically what makes a Forcing for Just One Round: My Dad and I played that “Good Hand” (9-10HCP? 7 Losers?), a “Good Suit” (KJ9xxx?), a 2-over-1 bid wasn’t forcing to game but we still played 1NT and which of these is good and which is bad when you get a 3 ♦ forcing. And we also played weak jump shifts. This worked or 3 ♥ rebid. for us. Of course, if you play transfers, use some artificial bid besides 2NT to start your inquiries, or have multiple asking Idioter's Corner by Mich Ravera bids, you should detail as much about them as you can. Use .Marvin Gaye, Sr., father of the songwriter was quoted as that “ MORE@OCC ”, if you run out of room. saying “Believe only half of what you see and none of what you It has been legal for many years at almost all levels to play hear.” I was pleased to play in the NABC in Las Vegas. Despite artificial 2-level opening bids that show average hands or better rumors of prices beyond the realm of reason, my wife and I and two known suits ( is one such agreement) or ANY were able to attend and play without completely destroying our three suits. It has likewise been legal for several years play 2- budget.
