Specialist Podiatrist’s award

Congratulations to Annette Hibbert, Specialist Podiatrist, who was a runner up in the recent national Advancing Healthcare Awards.

The ‘Into the Limelight’ category aims to encourage allied health professionals and healthcare scientists to explain their work to the media, patients and the public. Annette’s submission, ‘Promoting nail surgery by podiatrists’ describes her work to target GPs with information on the work of podiatrists, explaining what they are able to treat, how to refer patients and the costs of services. At the same time she made sure that the podiatrists were up to date on evidence-based practice and are offering patients a positive experience.

Her work has resulted in increased referrals, the setting up of a dedicated service and improved patient satisfaction.

The 2012 awards were presented by BBC medical correspondent Fergus Walsh at a celebration lunch on Friday 30 March in London. 2 Half a million steps for charity

Creative Play Scheme continues to flourish

The Creative Play Scheme at Ysbyty Gwynedd Children’s Unit has had another successful year. The Scheme is led by Gwynedd Council’s Community Arts Service, with community artists presenting creative activities for ward patients and visitors in group workshops and one to one sessions.

During the Summer and Christmas holidays and October and February half terms 26 full days of activities took place with the artists working with 181 children (patients and their siblings and friends); several parents and grandparents also took part.

A wide range of activities were offered: making puppets, fridge magnets and masks, creating card trees to hold get-well cards, making paper flowers and producing clay-figure animations.

As usual there was plenty of positive feedback with patients, parents and hospital staff reporting the activities helped to keep children positively occupied, provided a distraction from treatment, reduced anxiety, helped them develop new skills and strengthened the bonds between parents and children. 4 Promoting the Welsh Language

The Health Board’s Welsh Language Team were out in force on St David’s Day, with lunchtime displays at the staff restaurants at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Glan Clwyd Hospital and Wrexham Hospital.

They were there to raise awareness of the Health Board’s Welsh Language Scheme and the requirement to provide services bilingually to patients and service users and to distribute some Welsh language resources.

They were joined by Field Officers from Twf, who gave information on their work to promote the benefits of raising children bilingually.

As part of the event a quiz was held asking staff to identify Welsh speaking celebrities from a series of 50 photographs. The winners were Janet Jones and Janet Robinson (pictured alongside) from the Service User Experience Department at Wrexham Maelor Hospital who were presented with a W H Smiths voucher.

7 India north to south by bike

This summer three medical students are embarking on a gruelling 3000 km journey, cycling the length of India from Kashmir in the north down to the southern tip, in just 6 weeks. The purpose of this endeavour is to raise money for the humanitarian and medical aid charity Merlin.

Inspired by their previous voluntary work in India, Richard Thomas, who comes from north Wales, devised the expedition along with fellow medical student Matthew Rose.

While on placement together in Wrexham Maelor Hospital they have been joined by a third medical student Jason Walsh, who also has a keen interest in international health.

The beautiful terrain of north Wales has provided an excellent facility to begin their training. With Richard’s skills in Hindi, Matt’s bicycle knowledge and Jason’s extensive travel experience they should be well equipped to complete the journey.

If you would like to support the boys on their mission and provide much needed funding to the tremendously worthy charity Merlin, who work to save lives during and after humanitarian disasters around the world, please visit their just giving web page at www.justgiving.com/mattnrichcycleindia. Further information on Merlin can be found at www.merlin.org.uk.
