March is finally here! To a Golf Professional, the best part of hitting the month of March is feeling like we can see the light at the end of the long winter tunnel. Pretty soon the course will be green and everyone that has put away their clubs for the winter will knock the dust off them and come tee it up!

For those who have played in the winter, we are looking forward to the grass growing to help heal itself from the winter play. When the golf course goes dormant, the scars from players do not heal immediately, and by March they can be seen everywhere. These scars include divots, ball marks and cart traffic. Some wear and tear is expected, but many of the damaged spots are not. It is up to all of us help prevent these imperfections and help the course heal.

Scars we can help heal include ball marks on the green and divots in the fairways. Just by repairing the greens and filling the divots with sand, the turf will be level and ready to heal itself when the grass starts growing again. However, there are spots that will take man power as well as time to heal. These areas are generally worn from golf carts driven in wet spots that they should not be driven in. To make matters worse, 95% of the time these damaged areas are beyond the black and white pickets in the fairways that indicate that golf carts should return to the cart path. To be fair to the entire membership, everyone needs to take pride in the golf course and abide by these stakes. If a cart drives to a wet area and creates ruts, not only will it take our staff hours to lift and repair, but the areas will remain unsightly until the grass grows again. On this page, you will see a few pictures showing such damage. As for the photo just off the cart path, this is likely from a cart passing another cart and causing unsightly damage for all.

The crown jewel of this great community is our amazing Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. It is highly regarded by both those inside and outside of the community for its outstanding layout and its immaculate conditioning. It is not too late to stop some of the winter damage. While on the course, please remind those in your group to help do their part by filling divots, repairing ball marks, and most importantly, abiding by the cart rules of the day.

The good news: we are just a few short weeks away from the grass waking up and starting to grow. All of us here at the Club forward to seeing the sun out and the membership back on the course in force! Here’s to a great spring season!

Download it free from iTunes Pace of Play Tips: Store or Google Play. 1. When arriving at the green, park your cart or place your bag on the side of the green closest to the next tee (typically behind the green). This will allow you to move efficiently to the next tee and clear the green for the group behind you. 2. When appropriate, observe continuous putting on the green. Marking a short putt just to have to come back and putt it after another player finishes adds significant time to a round. 11 Club Life, March 2019 2019 WGA ‘Get in the Swing’ (GITS)

13 Club Life, March 2019 TENNIS TODD CHING Director of Tennis and Wellness Operations From the Pros:

One of the most rewarding aspects of the tennis industry is seeing players improve. While this has been a rainy winter, we booked more than twice as many courts in January 2019 compared to January 2018 (which was one of the coldest Januarys on record in North Carolina!). With more play this past winter, we have seen our members continue to work on improving their game. Winter Jumpstart and other programs have also helped maintain momentum that was gained last year.

We have a lot of programs and events beginning this month! We hope to see you at all of them, starting with the Pickleball Exhibition, the WTA Opening Cocktail Reception and the club-wide Opening Round Robin.

USTA Team play has begun. We have included the home schedule below so that you can plan your court time. If you are free, come out to enjoy and support our teams! Lastly, the Pickleball program is underway, and we have a variety of Head Pickleball paddles. The professional staff has hit with all of the models and we are very impressed with the quality. We have demos available and can answer any questions you may have!

See you on the courts! Todd and Robyn

RAY DAVENPORT Fitness Director

Spring is right around the corner and that means golf and tennis are about to heat up! Have you done everything you should to prepare your body for the sports you love? An injury can cause you to spend weeks or months away from the court or course. In order to decrease the risk of sports-related injuries, it’s crucial that everyone work on strength, balance, core stability, flexibility and overall body control. To guide you on your path of consistency, there are instructors, classes, and trainers who are experts in their field.

Sometimes we forget that at one point in time everybody was new to an activity that may now be a weekly habit. For example, I never thought I would enjoy cycling, I lacked an understanding of Pilates and I believed Group Classes were too easy. Now each hold a special place in my training philosophy and many of your friends can attest to the value and difficulty of each style of exercise.

Now is the time to experience a new class or instructor and take control of your fitness journey. If you are unfamiliar with any of the classes, please email me at [email protected] to schedule a complimentary consultation and introduction to any equipment or class formats in which you are interested. Below are some highlighted classes for the month of March. Spartan Training
