This is best represented by the opposing views of the Bath Preservation Trust and the Bath & North East Somerset Council. While the Trust stands as a supporter of saving Georgian Bath, the Council continues to sacrifice precious greenbelt areas and historic buildings for the purpose of attracting tourists and prospective residents. Both organizations are extensively examined in order to better comprehend Bath’s future. Although no definite answer can be reached at this point in time, besides establishing balance between old and new architecture, examining social and political issues in this city demonstrates that there is a serious need for legal intervention to prevent further destruction to a past way of life so that the modern world can emerge. Areas explored include the conserved Roman Baths, the recent developments of SouthGate and the Western Riverside Development, the conserved Beckford’s Tower and the demolished Gasholder. -

ISBN 0-9526326-1-6 INTRODUCTION Next to the medicinal waters and the comfortable Georgian lifestyle that Bath offered, its diversions were a prime attraction. 'Bath is certainly the very Theatre of variety in its amusements', ran one approving comment in 1779, and indeed, far from being peripheral to the spa's economic and social life, the fashionable entertainments were quite central to its continuing prosperity, its holiday atmosphere, and its alluring image. They were more varied than is commonly realised, appealing to humbler citizens as well the rich, and ranging from highly stuctured entertainments to casual pastimes and hobbies. Some had courtly origins (balls, cards, billiards, theatre), some were traditional (cockfights, racing, popular sports, civic ceremonies), but others belonged to the modern urban culture of coffee-houses, circulating libraries, exhibitions, public lectures and pleasure gardens. Healthy and relaxing open-air pursuits contrasted with the indoor excitements of assemblies and the gaming tables, but in one way or another, either as spectator or active participant, almost everyone was drawn into their orbit. -

If spirituality thrives where science cannot fully explain, then it should be no surprise that Bath has been at various times a door to the pagan Otherworld, a Roman sacred temple, a destination for Medieval pilgrims and a focal point for natural therapy. Even in the modern age, despite the investigations of geologists and their seismographs, carbon dating and isotopic recorders, the precise source and sequence of geological events that bring millions of litres of steaming, healing water to the centre point of Bath every day, have continued to resist definitive explanation. -

Bath River Line Emerging Vision
Bath & North East Somerset Council May 2021 Bath River Line Emerging vision Introduction The concept for a riverside park for Bath first emerged in the WaterSpace Study – a collaboration between Bath & North East Somerset Council, the Canal and Rivers Trust, the Environment Agency and Wessex Water. Published in 2017, the WaterSpace Study identified a series of projects with the potential to revitalise the River Avon and Kennet & Avon Canal waterways - for people and for nature. One project imagined a linear riverside park running along the banks of the River Avon. The park would encompass an existing path and a series of smaller parks along its route, creating a single entity, to be managed as one. Today that idea has evolved into the Bath River Line (BRL). Covering 10 km, the BRL will run from Newbridge in the West to Batheaston in the East. Given its scale and ambition, the BRL will be rolled out in three phases. This document begins to lay out a vision for the entire park. It also offers a series of emerging designs for the first phase - the western section between Newbridge and Green Park.
