NEW GENERATION MAYNARD COUNCIL ON AGING & SENIOR CENTER 50 BROWN ST., MAYNARD, MA 01754 978-897-1009

MAY 2021 Getting Some Fresh Air The blooming season is well under-way, and with the warm sunshine and cool breezes, I hope we all spend more time outdoors nowadays. I encourage town staff to hold outdoor meetings, as is my preference to meet offi cials at a table behind Town Hall and take advantage of the river as a background and the shade of greening trees. With the Governor’s recent announcement to continue to roll back restrictions on outdoor meetings, events and venues, I encourage the public to capitalize on the scenery downtown and at Maynard Crossing, and to check out new businesses and cuisine (or new to you). Mark your calendars for a few items this May. You can vote in the town’s annual election either in person on Saturday, May 8, and for all voters (all precincts) at the Fowler School between 7:00 am – 5:00 pm, and by early-voting by mail until May 8, 2021. You can fi nd more information on elections at the town’s website. We hope to recreate the magic of the past two Town Meetings at this year’s Annual Town Meeting planned for Saturday, May 15, starting at noon, to be held outdoors at the Mill’s parking lot off Sudbury Street. While on Sudbury Street, be sure to check out the progress of the construction site for the new fi re station across from St. Bridget’s Church. Memorial Day is observed at the end of the month on Monday, May 31, 2021, so stay tuned for events to mark the occasion as we return to some regular outdoor activities. Other regular traits of the warming season include public works projects, and paving is expected to begin May 17 at selected streets around town, as well as the implementation of yearly Level 1 Water Restrictions to begin May 5 through October. More information can be found at the town’s Department of Public Works webpage. I’m excited to report the successful COVID-19 vaccination clinics that were conducted at the Maynard Housing Authority locations recently, and the inoculation efforts of many home-bound residents, as coordinated by the staff and volunteers of the Housing Authority, Council on Aging, Fire Department, Board of Health and Town Administrator’s Offi ce. Thank you for doing your part for public health and safety, including wearing masks, practicing personal hygiene, following social distancing directives, and respecting everyone else’s sensitivities and anxieties. Please be safe and cautious in your daily activities and encourage your peers to do the same. Keep your ears and eyes open to further public health directions, and to news and offerings from the Council on Aging. Please visit the town website www.townofmaynard-ma.gov and click the below image. This page highlights Town Hall updates, daily updates of positive COVID-10 cases in Maynard, response, resources for businesses, and health and safety practices. You can also fi nd a link to subscribe to the Town’s newsletter.

In an attempt to distract from the state of the world: Remember that I would include pictures of unique aspects of Maynard from time to time? Do you know where to fi nd this month’s?

Sincerely, Greg Johnson Town Administrator [email protected]

2 MAY 2021 Together Though Apart I feel a sense of progress as I watch a black and white warbler fl itting in the tree above my bird bath, arriving after a major spring migration surge over the Gulf of Mexico last night. Spring, and the birds returning to my yard, send a promise of normalcy we’ve been missing this year. A male house wren sings passionately, then darts into a bird house I hung minutes before. (an aside: most birds return each year to where they bred the year before and offspring return to where they were raised. Hence the house wren sitting on my porch railing waiting for me to hang its box where it was last year). In Maynard, tree swallows skim the surface of the and Mill Pond gathering insects off the water, twittering, blue iridescent black glistening. For a bird lover, this time of year is a month of Christmas! Yesterday, walking around downtown Maynard, taking photos of murals for the cover, I felt the promise of new beginnings when Governor Baker and the CDC released new guidance on safe behavior and increased activities outdoors without a mask. (On a personal level I’m thrilled: my dear eighty-six-year-old neighbor is hard of hearing and over the last year I’ve struggled with knowing my mask and six feet of distance impacted her ability to read my lips). Vaccinations have brought relief and a new path forward towards the social connection we’ve all dearly missed. I’m so looking forward to re-engaging in person, as many are, this spring and summer. We have all missed Flo’s delicious dinners, so Pat and I have planned to offer them via a “grab-n-go” model, with cars driving through the Elks parking lot, sharing overdue hello’s and smiles galore. Via the COA van, Pat, Janine and I will be visiting housing sites and neighborhoods during the hot months of summer with ice cream. Our fi tness classes will continue to be offered virtually and outdoor options are being investigated as well. How to hold activities like bingo and knitting are being explored. This newsletter is full of incredible programs and events sponsored by the Maynard Sesquicentennial Committee and the Maynard Library – some via Zoom but many are outdoors. Don’t miss out! Please call the Council on Aging if you need support in any way. If you would like to learn how to use Zoom and other similar technology, we will try our hardest to fi nd you resources to assist you, including loaning devices like iPads and Chromebooks. If you would like to connect with someone you knew from attending activities at the COA, let us help you reach out. If you struggle with picking up prescriptions, running errands or need a ride to the supermarket, we can provide resources.

See you soon!

KATE HOGAN'S SENIOR NEWS MAY 2021 Enjoying the Outdoors this Season

Spring has sprung! And with the new season, comes a sense of hope and renewal. I fi nd that one of the best ways to enjoy this time of year is to spend time outdoors.

Fortunately our District has some wonderful local spaces to explore.

Maynard’s scenic rail trail is ADA-compliant and accessible for seniors, and the kayak and canoe launch at Ice House Landing has a paved walkway and accessible parking.

In addition, our state parks are free to enter and enjoy and the Commonwealth offers a special parking pass for seniors. Massachusetts residents age 62 and over are eligible for a discounted lifetime parking pass that covers the cost of parking at most state parks, including nearby parks like , , , the Rail Trail, Sudbury and Wachusett Reservoirs and .

Seniors can order the pass from the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) for only $10. To do so, send a request for a Senior Parks Pass with a copy of your Massachusetts driver’s license or other offi cial proof of residency and age and a check for $10 made out to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Requests can be sent to:

Central Regional Offi ce 355 West Boylston Street, Route 110 Clinton, MA 01510 Attention: Senior Pass

There’s truly something for everyone! I hope you are able to enjoy some time outdoors this season.
