This programme is the first of its kind in the world with a conglomeration of important issues on humanity, power (inner & outer) and spirituality. Several distinguished luminaries whose hearts echo the humanity from different communities and religions across the world, shared their views that every religion propagates service to humanity, and that moral and social principles have its own paths leading to one cosmic reality. Various religions are like flowers of different colors to be tied with a cord of love into a beautiful bouquet to be offered at the altar of truth. Diversity with unity is inherent in nature. This is a spectacular confluence where all streams of thought converge irrespective of religious persuasion, inclusive of all disciplines whether belonging to science or humanities, sacred or secular, social or cultural, political or economic, where distinguished luminaries share their thoughts and life's experiences, highlighting unity in diversity and diversity in unity. It remains the task of this conference to bring home the values of enlightenment in practice as life's journey within one's own self, and through love and service to the society at large. Swami Vivekananda observed that the world needs spirituality to establish fearlessness in the new generation, self-discipline, hard work and selfless service to the nation. He asserted, “Manifest divinity within you”, and added, “Mark, if you give up spirituality, the result will be that in three generations you will be extinct.” The former President of India, the late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who inaugurated the 4th World Confluence of Humanity, Power and Spirituality rightly quoted at the confluence, “Spirituality can eradicate corruption not legislation.” The World Confluence accords a special place to women who are a source of inspiration, love and selfless services. He said that women have great abilities and a great role to play in the world's advancement, which also finds voice in the UN Millennium Goals to which we are committed. They are the architects of the future generation. The world will be happy if they are happy. Children and youth are the future of the country and their consciousness has to be transformed through spiritual alchemy to gain inner power so as to cope with life's challenges with faith in self and the creator, and to serve humanity. The positive energy has to be aroused to maintain life's balance by having faith in self, creator and service. To inspire the youth, the confluence program included on the margin interschool debate, sit-and-draw and essay writing competitions related to service to humanity amongst different age groups followed by prize distribution. On Swami Vivekananda's 150th Birth Anniversary the confluence started Conferring the Swami Vivekananda SREI Samman Awards for Outstanding Service in the field of: (i) Education & Skill Development (ii) Health Care, Social upliftment & awareness (iii) Development and Research (iv) Literary Excellence (v) Welfare for Humanity (vi) Welfare for Women. To recognize the best practice and to motivate organizations we also gave the “Sach Bharat Samman” to deserving organizations. These were selected through a panel of eminent jury members and Ernst & Young was the process partner for this Award. The topics of our previous confluences are as follow:- 1. Humanity, Power & Spirituality 2. Service to Humanity 3. Service to Humanity and Nature 4. Essentialism of Spirituality to blossom life and the nation 5. Padma Bhushan Pullela Gopichand Telugu Person of the Year He actually wanted to wield a cricket bat. His brother, wisely, nudged him to hold a shuttle racket, instead. His passion for his chosen sport powered him to success after success. Each time he scaled a higher peak, he brought more glory to the country. A badminton player of international eminence, Padma Bhushan Pullela Gopichand is a coach par excellence. 45 year-old Gopichand was born to Subbaravamma and Subhash Chandra on November 16, 1973 in Nagandla of Prakasham district. He completed his undergraduate education at A.V. College in Hyderabad. All along Gopichand kept honing his skills as a badminton player and at 17, was made the captain of Indian Combined Universities Badminton team. In the early phase of his career, he was coached by S.M. Arif and later, joined the Prakash Padukone Academy run by the badminton legend. His transition to the pinnacle of fame was built on his dedication and commitment to the sport. Gopichand rewrote record books in quick time and was crowned the national champion for 5 successive years from 1996. He created history in 2001 when he won the All England Open Championship, two decades after a fellow-Indian, and his perfectionist-guru Prakash Padukone, had won the championship. The ease and elan with which Gopichand became the champion made him a fitting role model for aspiring players. However, the journey did not end there for this badminton legend. He decided to shape the careers of other aspiring sportspersons by mentoring them. It was with this aim that the Gopichand Badminton Academy was established in 2008.

  • History of Badminton
Facts and Records History of Badminton In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a lawn party at his country house in the village of Badminton, Gloucestershire. A game of Poona was played on that day and became popular among British society’s elite. The new party sport became known as “the Badminton game”. In 1877, the Bath Badminton Club was formed and developed the first official set of rules. The Badminton Association was formed at a meeting in Southsea on 13th September 1893. It was the first National Association in the world and framed the rules for the Association and for the game. The popularity of the sport increased rapidly with 300 clubs being introduced by the 1920’s. Rising to 9,000 shortly after World War Π. The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed in 1934 with nine founding members: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France and as a consequence the Badminton Association became the Badminton Association of England. From nine founding members, the IBF, now called the Badminton World Federation (BWF), has over 160 member countries. The future of Badminton looks bright. Badminton was officially granted Olympic status in the 1992 Barcelona Games. Indonesia was the dominant force in that first Olympic tournament, winning two golds, a silver and a bronze; the country’s first Olympic medals in its history. More than 1.1 billion people watched the 1992 Olympic Badminton competition on television. Eight years later, and more than a century after introducing Badminton to the world, Britain claimed their first medal in the Olympics when Simon Archer and Jo Goode achieved Mixed Doubles Bronze in Sydney.
