This catalogue accompanies Mark Wallinger’s exhibition at the at the 49th Venice Biennale (until 4 November 2001). Mark Wallinger has been selected by the British Council to represent Britain at the 49th Venice Biennale in author: Ralph Rugoff artists: Mark Wallinger 2001 (10 June - 4 November). His exhibition in the British Pavilion consists of recent and new work in a variety of media, including work created specifically for the Biennale. British Council £15.95 Born in 1959 and based in London, Wallinger has established an international ISBN 9780863554803 reputation over the past 15 years. His practice has encompassed a wide range of softback 64 pages media including , photography, , video and installation, even a living racehorse. His most recent public commission was the widely acclaimed illustrated in colour Ecce Homo sited in London's last year. Consistently surprising 280mm x 240mm and ambitious, his work has taken as its subject matter art history, mythology, religion, class structure, sport and popular culture. His approach has, however, remained characteristically provocative and often witty, and a recurrent questioning of traditional values and belief systems runs through the work.

This beautifully produced publication, including text by Ralph Rugoff, Director of the CCAC Institute, San Francisco, has been published by the British Council to accompany the exhibition. In 1995 Wallinger was shortlisted for the . He was awarded a Henry Moore Fellowship at the British School in Rome in 1998 and a DAAD Award, Berlin, in 2001. A comprehensive solo exhibition of Wallinger’s work was held at in Autumn 2000.
