Students/Teachers Attendance in Government Schools 11 District Muzaffargarh Profile Situation Analysis of City District Muzaffargarh History1 Muzaffargarh literally means "Fort of Muzaffar" since Governor of Multan, Nawab Muzaffar Khan founded it in 1794. Town, then in 1794, lied inside the walls of a fort built by Nawab Muzaffar Khan. It is one of oldest districts of Punjab. Geography1 Muzaffargarh is situated in southern Punjab province, almost at the exact centre of Pakistan. The area is spread over 8,435 km². It forms a strip between the river Chenab on its east and Indus River on its West. During the monsoon season 2010, almost 50% of the population was affected by the flood and rain water3. Economy1 Major industries are Cotton Ginning & Pressing, Flour Mills, Jute Textile, Oil Mills, Paper/Paper Board Articles, Petroleum Products, Poly Propylene Bags, Power Generation, Readymade Garments, Solvent Extraction, Sugar, Textile Composite and Textile Spinning. 1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muzaffargarh_District PARCO2 State of the art Mid-Country Refinery (MCR) is installed at Qasba Gujrat in District Muzaffargarh. It has a capacity to refine 100,000 barrels per day which represents 35% of Pakistan’s total volume. Electric Power Plants2 District Muzaffargarh has three main power plants: KAPCO: Kot Addu Power Company Limited (KAPCO) was established in 1965 to contribute to the national gride. KAPCO’s total generation capacity is 1600 MW. AES Lalipur: Lalipur Thermal Power station is located in Muzaffargarh with a generation capacity of 363 MW. TPS Muzaffargarh: Thermal Power Station Muzaffargarh has a total generation capacity of 1350 MW. Total generation capacity of these three plants add up to 3300 MW. Agriculture1 Wheat, sugarcane and cotton are the main crops grown in the district. Rice, jawar, bajra, moong, mash, masoor, ground nuts, maize and oil seeds such as rape / mustard and sunflower are also grown in minor quantities in the district. Mangoes, dates, citrus and pomegranate are the main fruits grown in the district. Dates, jaman, pears, phalsa and bananas are also grown in minor quantities in the district. Onions, carrots, cauliflower and peas are the main vegetables grown in the district. Ladyfinger, turnips, tomatoes, potatoes, garlic and chillies are also grown in the district in minor quantities. Administration Muzaffargarh is a large district with a population of 3.56 million (estimated 2010)3. The district is administratively divided into the following four tehsils (sub divisions), which contain a total of 93Union Councils: and 984 villages in Muzaffargarh district. Projected population growth rate for Muzaffargarh District is 3.38% (DCR 1998). The rural population makes up 87.1% of the total population. The overall literacy rate of Muzaffargarh District is 43% and female literacy rate is 29% (rural 24% female) according to the PSLM survey (2010-2011). Muzaffargarh is ranked 36 out of 36 districts in Punjab in terms of literacy rates10.
