Politics of Exclusion: Muslim Nationalism, State Formation and Legal Representations of the Ahmadiyya Community in Pakistan by Sadia Saeed A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Sociology) in The University of Michigan 2010 Doctoral Committee: Professor George P. Steinmetz, Chair Professor Howard A. Kimeldorf Associate Professor Fatma Muge Gocek Associate Professor Genevieve Zubrzycki Professor Mamadou Diouf, Columbia University © Sadia Saeed 2010 2 Dedication This dissertation is dedicated to my parents with my deepest love, respect and gratitude for the innumerable ways they have supported my work and choices. ii Acknowledgements I would like to begin by acknowledging the immense support my parents have given me every step of the way during my (near) decade in graduate school. I have dedicated this dissertation to them. My ammi and baba have always believed in my capabilities to accomplish not only this dissertation but much more in life and their words of love and encouragement have continuously given me the strength and the will to give my research my very best. My father‘s great enthusiasm for this project, his intellectual input and his practical help and advice during the fieldwork of this project have been formative to this project. I would like to thank my dissertation advisor George Steinmetz for the many engaged conversations about theory and methods, for always pushing me to take my work to the next level and above all for teaching me to recognize and avoid sloppiness, caricatures and short-cuts. It is to him that I owe my greatest intellectual debt.

  • Performance Analysis of T20-World Cup Cricket 2012 Ananda B
Sri Lankan Journal of Applied Statistics, Vol (14-1) Performance Analysis of T20-World Cup Cricket 2012 Ananda B. W. Manage*, Stephen M. Scariano and Cecil R. Hallum Sam Houston State University Huntsville, Texas, USA 77341 Corresponding Author (Email: [email protected]) Received: 13 February 2013 / Revised: 15 May 2013 ABSTRACT Performance analysis of cricket players is always an intricate task due to the correlated nature of the variables used to quantify contributions to the team. Lack of transparency of current methods, probably due to commercial confidentiality, creates a necessity for new and lucent evaluative methods. Here, we present a simple, yet straightforward, method for analyzing the performance of T20-World Cup Cricket 2012 players that can be easily adapted to other team sports. Keywords: Cricket, Principal Component Analysis, Ranking Methods. 1. Introduction Quantifying individual player contributions to a team is an important yet difficult task in all team sports. Usually, there are several indicators available to measure player performances, which are based on different aspects of their contributions to the team. Unfortunately these indicators are mostly related to each other in a manner that oftentimes causes difficulty in constructing an overall performance measure. Our idea is to use a tool acquired from multivariate statistical analysis and apply it directly to T20-World Cup Cricket 2012 data. In this method, the first principal component is used to rank batsmen and bowlers. The technique is simple and can be directly applied to the type of correlated data routinely found in team sports such as cricket. Cricket administrators and sports analysts can use this amenable method to quantify players’ contribution, which could lead to a ranking structure based on their performances.

  • Sehwag Holds the ICC World Cup Trophy After Jets Kept Pounding the Ball Effectively
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2014 SPORTS Dolphins ground Jets EAST RUTHERFORD: The Miami Dolphins kept their playoff hopes intact by rallying for a 16-13 victory over the New York Jets on Monday when Caleb Sturgis made a 26-yard field goal with 1:57 remaining New York (2-10) rushed for 277 yards on 49 carries, but made enough key errors in the second half to lose. The Dolphins remained a factor in the wild-card race thanks to rookie Jarvis Landry’s eight receptions, Lamar Miller’s 4- yard TD run early in the fourth quarter, and plen- ty of defense when the Jets needed to pass. New York threw only 13 times, fewest in the NFL this season, and gained 49 yards. The usual- ly reliable Nick Folk missed two field goals. All of that offset a season high on the ground as Chris Johnson had his best performance for the Jets with 105 yards. Sturgis also made field goals of 43 and 44 yards. After trailing most of the way, Miami tied it on Miller’s run with 10:24 remaining. That brought the loudest cheers of the night; thousands of Dolphins fans at MetLife Stadium braved the wet, windy conditions. Jets problems with penalties on special teams hurt them all night, and a holding call against Saalim Hakim set up the Dolphins at New York’s 39 on the tying drive. On the winning possession, backup tight end Dion Sims had catches of 18 and 17 yards. The MUMBAI: Indian cricket player Virender Sehwag holds the ICC World Cup trophy after Jets kept pounding the ball effectively.
