This article shows that Pope Francis diagnoses economic inequality as both a structural problem and a problem of virtue, and that the virtue he calls for in response is what James F. Keenan, SJ has called Jesuit hospitality. Reviewing contemporary theological work on hospitality, I show that Francis’ Jesuit hospitality shares many features with hospitality as described by feminist theologians. Namely, it is risky, takes place across difference, acknowledges the marginality of both host and guest, and promises mutual benefit to each party. Francis’ account of the spiritual practice of encounter provides a concrete vision of Jesuit hospitality in action. This article contributes to existing literature on the uniquely Jesuit nature of Francis’ theology and to work showing the resonance of his intellectual standpoint with feminist approaches. It proposes a Christian virtue response to the pressing contemporary problem of economic inequality. Keywords: inequality; virtue; hospitality; Jesuit; Pope Francis; feminism 1. Introduction In today’s globalized, unequal world, 2.2 billion people live on less than $2 U.S. per day while 62 individuals own as much wealth as the poorest half of the world [1]. This and other shocking statistics have made economic inequality an issue of urgent concern for scholars, policy makers and religious leaders. -

Consider what was hanging above the hotplate in the kitchen of an elderly woman in Compiègne, France. In fact, the painting was authenticated as “Christ Mocked,” a masterpiece attributed to Cimabue, the 13th- century Italian forefather of the Italian Renaissance who painted the fresco of St. Francis of Assisi in the basilica, widely thought to be the saint’s best likeness. Her painting sold for a cool 24 M Euro! Have you ever wondered what’s on your bookshelf? In 1884, while rummaging through an obscure Tuscan monastery library, a scholar discovered a 22-page copy (dating from the 9th century) of a late 4th century travel diary detailing an extended pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The account was written by an intrepid woman named Egeria, whose curiosity was only matched by her deep piety. It reveals that early Christian worship was chock full of signs and symbols, including a liturgical year with Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter and Pentecost. It also includes the earliest evidence of today’s feast.1 Talk about a barn find! She related that today’s feast: “is undoubtedly celebrated here with the very highest honor, for on that day there is a procession, in which all take part... All the priests, and after them the bishop, preach, always taking for their subject that part of the Gospel where Joseph and Mary brought the Lord into the Temple on the fortieth day.”2 Christ is indeed the Light of the Nations. -

By her moral influence, she restrained the overreaching power of civil authority from encroaching on the rights of citizens and those who could not defend themselves. With the same moral authority, the Church exercised a commanding influence on Hollywood during the twentieth century. The Legion of Decency, founded in 1933 by Archbishop of Cincinnati John T. McNicholas, was an organization behind this influence by opposing immoral or irreverent content. MEN FOR OTHERS by Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Education for social justice and social action today FOREWORD The address of Father Pedro Arrupe to the "Tenth International Congress of Jesuit Alumni of Europe," in Valencia, Spain, on July 31, 1973, has already been published in French, Spanish and Italian. The address caused a stir because it called with insistence for change. Continuing education for social justice poses no threat while it remains on the level of abstract theory. Father Arrupe brings doctrine to bear on the personal lives of all who hear him. To accept what he has to say is to accept and work for change in one's own manner of life and environment - not an easy thing at all. Words like "radical" have been used about this address. That word is not hard to accept if it means going to the root of the matter and the discourse is indeed radical, as is the teaching of Pope Paul VI in Populorum Progressio and Octogesima Adveniens. The words of Father Arrupe were addressed to alumni, but they apply to all of us who need education or more likely re-education for social justice and social action today. In 1973, this address was delivered to a group of Jesuit high school alumni who were predominantly male. We have adapted the text to include "men and women" to make its powerful message applicable for a contemporary Jesuit alumni audience. MEN AND WOMEN FOR OTHERS by Pedro Arrupe, S.J. I am pleased to avail myself of the opportunity offered by the great religious events taking place in Poland and involving the universal Church, to extend my fraternal greeting and convey a special word to you. In this way I wish to express my love for Christ's Church in our homeland, which the whole Polish Episcopal Conference, and each Bishop, cares for in a spirit of collegial responsibility. My pilgrimage began in Wrocław with my participation in the 46th International Eucharistic Congress. The meeting with Christ in his Mystery of infinite love and of unity, entrusted to the Church and to humanity in the Eucharistic Sacrifice, speaks to us with profound eloquence: it does so to Catholics as well as to all our Christian brothers and sisters, especially those present at the Congress. The whole Church in Poland had the opportunity to study and contemplate the mystery of the Eucharistic presence of Emmanuel - God with us (cf. Mt 1:23). For all of us it was a special experience of the truth about Christ who "is the same yesterday and today and for ever" (Heb 13:8). We can all draw from this life-giving source the strength and hope to continue to build on Polish soil a community of faith, a community of all who believe in Christ. Since this community is a unity in charity, it is always the fruit of sacrifice, of renouncing something for the sake of others, and the fruit of concern for the common good. -

THE CHURCH MILITANT- THE CHURCH PERSECUTED FRANCIS CONWAY, O.P. NE OF THE MANY THINGS about the Catholic Church that puzzle non-Catholics is the constant recurring suc cession of persecutions which seem to stalk its steps. li No sooner is the Catholic Church established in some new mission field than bold hostility, ranging in its efforts from discomforting annoyances to violent bloodshed, attempts to de stroy its life. In countries where it has been long established, even in so-called Catholic countries, a period of comparative peace for the Church is succeeded by a period of persecution, in a never ending cycle. Not long ago a Protestant clergyman in England, discussing the recent disorders in Spain, and seeing in these qisorders a symptom of the world-wide revolt against the Catholic Churc:h, even on the part of members of that Church, declared that the institution capable of arousing such bitter, fierce, and widespread hatred among men must indeed be a very wicked thing. The principle on which he based this judgment is the un founded assumption that what men hate must be evil. This would certainly be true if this thing which men hate were also hated by God. But is this the case? History will show that there have been persecutions of the Catholic Church in the past, violent and -bloody ones, and when their instigators were glutted with blood, and satisfied that they had destroyed the hateful thing, the Church has risen from the ruins so fresh and vigorous that it seemed as if persecution, far from annihilating it, had infused new life into it. -

Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley Courtesy New Orleans Province, Society of Jesus Celebrating the Centenary of Pedro Arrupe This is the first in a series of events at JSTB honoring the centennial of the birth of Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Fr. Arrupe the superior general of the Society of Jesus during the tumultuous period following the Second Vatican Council, from 1965 until his formal resignation in 1983. He is an important figure for many reasons and the idea of dedicating a series of events to honor his memory struck a chord with many members of the JSTB community. Many Jesuits remember him as a dynamic and beloved leader who was broad-minded, patient with and trusting of those under him. And of course, he presided over an extraordinarily important period in our history and during that time was one of the most recognized and influential Catholic leaders in the world. 1 CourtesyTime Magazine There are good reasons why Jesuits would like to celebrate such a towering contemporary figure. For myself, I entered Jesuits in the mid-1970s during Fr. Arrupe’s term as General. As I say in the introduction to the small collection of his writings that I was privileged to edit, he was “a hero to those entrusted with my early formation in the Jesuits [who] quickly became my hero.”1 However, as important as Arrupe is to Jesuits, his influence does not begin or end there. Many others religious women and men of various congregations as well as numerous lay men and women, acknowledge a tremendous dept to him for his leadership and vision.
