Joseph V•.Melillo, Director, NEXT WAVE Festival M-BASE is a name given to the music ofa community ofmusicians who are striving to create a com monmusicallanguage based on their experiences in life. Since the music is basedonpastandpresent experiences, it is a natural reflection ofwhat is happening 1UJMl. "M" stands for Macro and :BASE" stands for Basic Army ofStructured Extemporiltltions. It is a music based on improvisation, but improvisation within given musical situations or structures (forms). It is the variety and uniqueness ofthese structures, particularly rhythm, melody andform, that gives the music its fresh sound. ,Although M-BASE is largely based on the experiences ofblack people in America, the music draws on musical and non-musical sourcesfrom around the globe andalso the imaginary wOrld ofthe human mind..Ifis our intention to remain open to al~ experiences but create sounds with a character oftheir own. ~ hope this concert will help bring this music to the attention ofmusic loversfrom aU walks oflife.
