You have surmounted all manner of challenges this year to gain the skills you need for your future. I know many of you have experienced difficulties and responsibilities, perhaps touching your family, your friends, or your community. Life has not been the same. Most people have suffered restrictions and privations. Yet you have succeeded in your studies, and to do so, you demonstrated flexibility, adaptability and perseverance during the pandemic. My hope and wish for you is that your accomplishment brings you justified pride and confidence for your future. I have frequently told my mother’s story: she advanced her education by taking correspondence courses when she was serving in the military during and after the Second World War. She was the first in her family to graduate from university, which changed her life and her children’s lives (including my own) forever. My mother and father turned their studies in English and History into careers in journalism and, in my mother’s case, as a paralegal professional running a law office. Education changes lives. And it is the best preparation for an always uncertain future. When you made the choice to enrol at TRU, you chose to take control of your future. With determination and the support of family, friends, faculty and staff, you have gained knowledge and skills in your area of study and have found your path to success. You also became part of the TRU family. You made friends, some that will last your lifetime. I encourage you to stay in touch with your alma mater and continue to build meaningful and lifelong connections with TRU alumni. Please remain inquisitive, caring and open to others. These are keys to success in life. At TRU we are guided by the idea that we are all related and interconnected with nature, each other, and all things (the idea of Kw’seltktnéws). I hope you have felt a sense of belonging during your time with TRU—and I hope you continue to feel connected wherever you may go. Congratulations, graduates! It is an honour on behalf of TRU to Brett Fairbairn wish you all the best. President and Vice-Chancellor Brett Fairbairn is TRU’s fourth president and vice-chancellor. An alumnus of the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Oxford, Brett spent 30 years at the University of Saskatchewan in teaching and leadership positions before arriving at TRU in December 2018. He is a passionate advocate for students and higher education. 2021 SPRING CONVOCATION 5 COAT OF ARMS Granted by Robert Douglas Watt, fish as food and for recreation in their farming and ranching in the region— Chief Herald of Canada, on April 1, communities and the community past and present.
