METHODIST CHURCH (www.brentknollmethodistchurch.com) Minister Revd. Steve Bennett The holiday season is firmly upon us and here at Brent Knoll Methodist Church, we’re looking forward to our annual August coffee mornings, which will take place each Saturday of the month at 10.30am. Each week, we’ll open our chapel so that we can meet up and share refreshments, catch up and exchange news with our church and village friends. Any donations we receive will go to a different charity each week and I’ll let you have the details of any monies raised and the chosen charities in the September issue of the Brent Knoll Magazine. As this year flies by, I’m finding it hard to believe that I’m actually writing the “July/August” article for our church - but looking even further ahead, we will be holding our Harvest Festival on 9th September. This is one of our favourite times of the year as our chapel really does look its best decked out in seasonal fare as we look forward to this special service which will be followed by a home prepared shared lunch. It goes without saying that all are welcome to come and join us as we celebrate this special time in our country church calendar. So until September, all that is left to say from all of us at Brent Knoll is that we wish you a safe, peaceful and restful Summer whether you are travelling far or enjoying time at home in our beautiful part of the world which is Somerset. With every blessing. It was lovely to welcome Jesse and Percy to the group - delightful additions to our ’Baby Corner’. We are looking forward to the Summer Outing on Tuesday 17th July, which will also be the last day of term. We will be meeting in the farm car park (TA82RW) from 10.30am onwards. Wishing all the toddlers, their families and carers lots of fun this Summer and see you again on Tuesday 11th September for the start of the new term. Chris Evans Bike Ride and BBQ 1st July 2018 at 11.00am, Red Cow, Brent Knoll. The seventh Bike Ride and BBQ is planned for 1st July this year. Cyclists will head off at 11am from The Red Cow car park and head toward Catcott. The ride is through some lovely scenery and mainly along quiet country lanes. On making the return journey, riders have the challenge of completing 26 miles. The reward: the legendary Havercrofts BBQ. To date we have raised £12,695 for The British Lung foundation. Council supporting homeowners with essential home repairs Sedgemoor District Council is taking the opportunity to remind homeowners about their loan scheme to enable homeowners to fund essential home repairs. The scheme has been developed to keep people warm, safe and dry in their homes. A variety of works can be considered, such as roof and thatch repairs, boiler and other heating system replacement or installation, replacing rotten or draughty windows, structural repairs or electrical or plumbing work, to name a few. The scheme has been set up to enable eligible homeowners to choose their own contractor and there are a variety of loan products available to suit individual needs and means. The scheme is delivered through Wessex Resolutions CIC a not-for-profit, Responsible Finance provider in close partnership with the council. The partnership has been running for over ten years across Sedgemoor and has helped a huge variety of homeowners. A recent client said “For all my adult life I have not had central heating and, now I’m getting a bit older, it will be nice to feel warm in the winter.” Through providing loans, the council are ensuring funds for homeowners are sustainable meaning that every repayment goes back into the council pot to lend to homeowners into the future. A loan funded by the council could help spread the cost of home repairs but let you enjoy the benefit right away. For more information, call Wessex Resolutions direct on 01823 461 099, visit www.wrcic.org.uk or email [email protected]. Loans have a fixed interest rate and typical 4.2% APR and are subject to status. Missing future payments could affect your credit rating and ability to obtain credit in the future. Wessex Resolutions CIC may insist on loans being protected at the Land Registry by a Title Restriction. Wessex Resolutions C.I.C.: a community interest company limited by guarantee, registered in England, company number 4512225. Registered address: Heatherton Park Studios, Bradford on Tone, Taunton TA4 1EU. Wessex Loans and Wessex Home Improvement Loans are trading names used by this company. Wessex Resolutions C.I.C is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (675263) for credit and debt-related regulated activities. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you I want to say a huge thank you to the whole Fête committee who made such a marvellous job of this year’s Fête. It was a really lovely day; the band was brilliant and set the mood for fun. We had our great favourites, the School Country Dancing display and the Chalice Morris Dancers to entertain us. New this year were the Pirate Games, the pure joy on the face of the first 3 year old pirate when he completed the course was wonderful. A great success! There were new stalls and the under 14’s Baking competition too. It was lovely seeing families and friends meeting up and having such a wonderful time. It was a real village get together at its best. This all comes at a cost, the time, energy, hard hard work and commitment of all the people involved in bringing the day together. We need to remember to say thank you and well done. Ooh, Also the glorious food and drinks on offer. Frankie New FRONT COVER Photos A selection of pictures from the Fête, courtesy of www.burnham-on-sea.com. Bob 16

In May, we held our Annual General Meeting. At this meeting the Committee was asked if members were willing to stay on for another year, to which they all agreed. The Committee then stepped down and was re-elected by the members. Annual subscriptions were also collected. After our official business was concluded, we settled down to a talk by Sara McClean on quilting. Sara had been living for ten years in the Bahamas and whilst there, developed a passion for the materials produced there, such as cotton with batik stamped exotic patterns on and silk screening. She brought with her some exquisite samples in particular some quilts she had produced. One was a copy of the view from her window at home in the Bahamas, the vibrancy of the colours of the materials used was outstanding. Another one had copies of a small plant which grows on the water’s edge and can only be seen when the tide is out, the locals call it mermaid’s wine glass (possibly Acetabularia). Do you call these creations art or craft? I would call this a happy marriage of both art and craft. She also had fond memories of the groups of Island ladies who also produced such beautiful creations. The meeting concluded with delicious refreshments produced by the Tea Organisers, who I am grateful are still on the Committee. Dates for the next meetings:- July 18th - Garden Party - Ivy Clad Hall August 15th - Watches and Matches - Brenda Morton September 19th - Wildlife around Brent Knoll - Ged Keele We are a very friendly group and we welcome new members. We meet at 2.30pm in the Parish Hall on the third Wednesday of every month. For more information, contact either Karen Russell on 01278 769 382 or Ann Robson 01278 760 981. AR WI Craft Group We will meet at 2.30pm on Monday July 16th and August 20th in the Methodist Church school room. We are a small friendly group, which likes to knit or craft, chatter and have a cuppa. We have enjoyed having some sewing friends with us, who have been making some green heart bunting to be used by our WI. We continue to knit hats and scarves for Mission to Seafarers, as well as blankets for premature babies. We would welcome other people who craft - whatever it may be; you don’t have to be a WI member to join us. We look forward to seeing you at the end of September with your ideas of venues and thoughts for our future programme. We were also entertained by Dr Francis Burroughes, who spoke about his early career as a producer of amateur operatics. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 11th July, when we will enjoy the surroundings of Ball Copse Hall by kind permission of Sue Boss. Members: don’t forget to bring a contribution towards the tea. There will be a bring and buy table. Looking ahead, at the meeting on 12th September, 2.30pm, at the Parish Hall, a representative of the Devon and Somerset Fire Brigade will advise on fire safety in the home. Jazzical Swing On Saturday May 26th over 60 people enjoyed the music of this band together with their guest singer Terri, they played songs including Love me or Leave me, Crazy Rhythm, Summertime and Anything Goes. Plenty to make the feet tap. Thanks to the generosity of the audience together with some donations, an amazing sum of £817.50 was raised for The Parish of Three Saints. Special thanks to the Red Cow, David Bull Optometrists, Wyevale Garden centre and Pauline Chadwick for contributions towards the raffle. Thanks too to all those who helped behind the scenes and on the day. Mike and Margaret Fibro and ME Fibro and ME is a group that gets together weekly to chat with others who share our illness (Fibro, ME and CFS and other pain related problems), and offer each other support in a positive and non-judgemental way. The illnesses can be very isolating, and we meet to make sure each of our members has some support in a friendly and informal way, with some fun along the way! We share information and ways of coping, and help raise public awareness of the problems we all face. We hold weekly meetings each Wednesday in Highbridge (after the first meeting a small donation is requested towards room rent). We start at 11.45am (to allow us time to have soup (or bring your own sandwiches), along with tea and coffee and a chat, before starting the meeting), and finish around 3pm. You can find us at Gospel Tabernacle Evangelical Church, The Gospel Centre, Old Burnham Road, Highbridge, TA9 3JG. We also have outings (tailored to our capabilities), and hold occasional public Awareness Days. We also have a Facebook page (Fibro And ME), to introduce the group to the public and to keep us all informed about upcoming events. The group is keen to welcome new members and if you are interested, then you are welcome to contact the Group Facilitator, Paul on 07740 605 507. You can just turn up any Wednesday or, if preferred, one person will pop outside and greet a newcomer, so they don’t have to come in alone. For more information, either contact the group on 07598 503 436, email [email protected] or you can contact your Village Agent Kim Wilcox on 07943 555 519. As both of these have-mails, I will send them the second version. So unusually, everyone will be satisfied! If anyone else wants to have the second version, just let me know and I will send it by e-mail. This month’s 17 clue Sudoku is not as easy as last time and I plan to make them progressively slightly harder each month. The Tough Sudoku starts easy and is similar to the June one, so is challenging! We have two new entrants this month and we also have 2 husband and wife pairs competing with each other!. 14 persons sent answers in last month and I know that several others solve the puzzles, but don’t send their entries in. Comments from solvers were “We did the 17 clues easily but found the tough one hard. I did it at a 3rd attempt!” – “Thank you David, hours of fun!” “puzzles rich in content”, “17 Clue was routine but Tough grid took me two goes and all the methods”, “The 17 Clue one was very easy but the tough was much harder. Got myself into a position where I had to gamble and the gamble paid off.” Solutions came from, Klaus Brenner, Mac Hares, John Harper (welcome), Liz Ibrahim, Janis Lawrence (welcome), Stephen Lawrence, Chris Marsh, Frankie and Geoff New, Pat Paulson, Peter Osborn, John Spiers, Ted Toon and Gordon Watson. Nature diary for July Last month I was bemoaning the fact that there was little bird song during May. I can now report that our native birds were in good song during the first week in June. I heard chaffinches, goldfinches, wrens and even a greenfinch singing during that week. Sadly the migrant blackcaps did not appear to be much in evidence, nor have I seen many swallows or house martins over Brent Knoll. A pair of swallows flew around the church one Sunday recently but have not nested in the porch, as they used to do. The other bird that I have not seen recently is the long-tailed tit. These small but beautiful birds nest early in the season and are susceptible to cold weather. Perhaps the Beast from the East did take its toll in March when they were laying their eggs. Further the cold weather since could have reduced the insects available for early nesters to eat. Let us hope their numbers recover quickly. One of my notable finds this month has been pyramidal orchids on the top of the Knoll. There must have been nearly 200 plants either in bloom or in bud, when I visited recently. If you are able to climb the Knoll in the last week of June or first week in July you should be able to see them flowering. Having mentioned orchids, I thought I would take the opportunity to write a few words about orchids in Britain. There are at least forty different species of orchid in the British Isles. Fifteen of these can be seen regularly in the county of Somerset. Orchids produce large numbers of tiny seeds that are very light. Most will obviously land close to the plants that produce them but some can be wafted into the air travelling large distances before alighting. These will not only have to land on a suitable habitat for that particular orchid, but, when they germinate, they will also require to grow with a special fungus before they can develop. Orchids take between 3 to 7 years to develop to maturity when they flower. The flowers are remarkable for their strikingly shaped florets, which are usually very colourful and often have weirdly shaped lower lips that are have evolved to attract particular insects. In Somerset you can see bee, butterfly and lizard orchids, and in other parts of the country there are man, monkey and lady orchids. If anyone is interested in hunting for orchids I would be happy to tell you where they might be found. Five club members were lucky in the recent Wimbledon ticket ballot. They will be off to watch the tennis with their guests and, no doubt, hoping for some sunshine. Mary Wridgway It was with great sadness that we recently learned that Mary had suddenly passed away. Mary will be known to many readers of the Brent Knoll News; she lived in the village for many years and was one of my predecessors as Editor. Even after Mary moved away from the village, she continued to have a stall at the Village Bazaar and regularly sent me snippets for the BKN, several of which I still have and will continue to insert over the coming months. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary’s friends and family. Editor GARDENER(S) REQUIRED - URGENTLY We have ¾ of an acre of formerly beautiful garden (we have opened it 4 times for the national garden scheme and it has been much admired). This year, again due to my husband’s ill health and my inability, due to my total loss of my sense of balance, we have been unable to dig it through and de-weed it. We have one gardener, but he has other commitments, and it is too much for him alone, so we are in sore need of further help with digging and weeding, as soon as possible. If you can help, or know of someone who can, we would be truly grateful. We have plants ready to put in but are unable to deal with them until the preparatory work is done. Help with cutting the lawn and strimming is not required, as we can deal with that ourselves. Tel. 760 016 VEGETABLE PLOT Do you need more space to grow your own vegetables? We have a large vegetable plot, but, due to my husband’s ill health this year, have been unable to do anything with it. Would you be interested in having half of it for your own use, FREE, in return for keeping our half clean and tidy, whilst we grow something in it? We are willing to discuss other arrangements if you have a better idea. Tel. 760 016 Barb Search & Rescue Charity Golf Day Barb Search & Rescue is holding a Charity Golf Day on Friday 13th July at Golf Club at Brean Leisure Park. If anyone in interested in sponsoring a hole or playing, could they please contact me on 07767 755 817 or by email - [email protected]. The players should be in teams of 2, it is a shotgun start at 10am with a bacon roll and coffee at the start, a round of golf and a carvery for £70 per team. A great day out and supporting a local Charity at the same time. I look forward to hearing from you. Robert Smith Just for Fun – from Church Newsletters Next Thursday there will be try-outs for the choir. They need all the help they can get. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24th in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. A bean supper will be held in the church hall. Music will follow. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be “What is Hell?” Come early and listen to our choir practice. WHERE IN OUR VILLAGE Each month the BKN will have a small picture quiz – no prizes, but I hope you may enjoy guessing where the object shown is located within the Parish boundary. Last month’s object is a decorative feature on the south facing side of the Manor House. This month’s object is also rather difficult, though it is fairly prominent and, when you find it, you may well feel you have seen the light! So where is it? The answer and another object will be shown next month. JaPe

Brent Knoll Ceramic Poppy Project While the Church bells rang out, there was a hive of industry at one house in The Willows where the second group of eight ‘girls’ armed with rolling pins, who wanted to combine fun with a serious project, set about making poppies. Guided by Anita, our Brent Knoll ceramic expert, and blessed with a fine, warm evening, we learned how to roll the clay, use the carefully prepared stencils, prick out petal shapes and after half an hour, fix them together, tweak the edges and place them in containers to hold them in position. After a hesitant start, where, in the words of Robert Burns, ‘pleasures are like poppies spread, you seize the flow’r, its’ bloom is spread’, we soon mastered the task. The poppy heads, when glazed, coloured and mounted, will be placed around the War Memorial to help us recall that it was in Flanders fields were poppies grew... ‘... between the crosses, row on row, that mark our place; and in the sky the larks, still bravely singing, fly scarce heard amid the guns below.’ Not only in Rosemary and Ged’s garden did the poppies now blow, for during the period the clay was resting, Rosemary introduced us to the filmy green long hangings, already covered in many bright red material poppies, which will be hung each side of the Church chancel on Armistice Day. The mystery of the eight lit candles, needles and cotton, scissors, round shaped objects and black and red material soon became clear. We tackled the task with creative joy, occasionally singeing finger tips as we held the red rounded shapes above the flame and saw with amazement how the edges curled and metamorphosised. While Lesley was carefully cutting out and Maggie busy sewing centres to petals, Rosemary again supplied us with Pimms, wine and delicious finger bites of spinach and cream cheese rolls. In that short time we created ten more poppies for the hangings. So, lest you forget ... ‘To you from falling hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die we shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. John McCrea (1872-1918) Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was a Canadian poet, physician, author, artist and soldier during World War I and a surgeon during the Second Battle of Ypres, in Belgium. Brent Knoll Weather Report – May 2018 May was a dry month, in fact by the third week, it was a candidate to be our driest month on record, but showers in the last week brought the total up a little. The first half of May was often cloudy and on the cool side, although the Early May Bank Holiday got some well-timed warmth and sunshine. Temperatures were higher in the second half of the month with a good deal of sunshine in the third week, but the final week was uncomfortably humid with a good deal of cloud - although there was a bit of sunshine for the second Bank Holiday Monday too. For much of the first half of May, we were under the influence of Atlantic lows, but high pressure to our south made sure they passed well north of us: we got the cloud and a cool south-westerly breeze, but little rain. The high pressure extended into the south- west of the UK for the first Bank Holiday weekend, bringing sunshine on Saturday, followed by overnight mist as temperatures dropped under clear skies. Once that had burned off on Sunday morning, things really warmed up; we recorded 25.2C (77°F) during the afternoon, followed by a warm and sunny Bank Holiday Monday. It was cooler for the second week, but it remained dry with some sunshine. As we moved into the third week, high pressure took up residence over the UK on the 17th. This produced clear blue skies, daytime temperatures in the low 20s, and a gentle breeze to keep things comfortable - perfect Spring weather, but of course, it couldn’t last for ever and the first rumbles of thunder were heard late on the 21st. The last week of May saw similar temperatures to the third, but without the sunshine. It was an odd week, with a gentle north-easterly breeze at surface level: but a little higher in the atmosphere, there was a southerly wind from the Mediterranean, and this brought the warmth and humidity. You may have noticed that the clouds were travelling in almost the opposite direction to the breeze you could feel. Warmth and humidity means thunderstorms, of course, and there was torrential rain in the south and later in Wales, but we got off lightly and even managed a little sunshine for the second Bank Holiday Monday. The average temperature for May was 13.4°C (56°F), about a degree above normal despite a cool start, but rainfall was low at 34.4mm (1.4in). Summer is here, so a quick look at the Spring figures – the average temperature was 9.7°C (49°F), right in the middle of the normal range, so May’s warmth offset the chilly March. Spring rainfall was on the high side at 198.6mm (7.8in), but the dry May helped to offset a wet March. I’ll finish with a little plug for the new Brent Knoll weather web site – it’s had a facelift. Have a look at www.knollweather.co.uk and see what you think. . More Ramblings of a Rambler The good news is that the swallows have chosen to build their nests in the stables and not in the garage, so this saves me having to cover the cars in sheets to protect them from the guano. Once dried, the guano takes for ever to remove and I am sure there must be a market for it somewhere, it’s as good as “no nails”. The dulcet tones of the Rambleress was heard seeking my assistance, and on investigation she was found trying to round up and protect from the dogs, a brood of wrens that had fledged and dropped out of their nest onto the garage floor. I secured the dogs and ring fenced the garage with a roll of wire fencing until the mother wren had taught the youngsters how to fly. During the May half term, we had a grandchildren sleep over, part of which usually means a grandad ramble. I took them to an area where I would normally see roe deer, so told the grandchildren to be quiet as we approached. Once in position we stood upright and looked out across the area but saw nothing, in desperation I knocked my stick on the fence and right on cue, just in the front of us, up jumped a deer, which quickly vacated the scene. The amazing thing was it happened again in the next field. These sightings reinforce the fact that the deer population is becoming a problem, as I am hearing daily that gardeners in the village are losing their produce to the deer. On recent walks, I have encountered several families of ducks and if, like me, you are walking dogs that are off the lead, it is important that you keep your dogs under control. The ducklings from hatching are able to swim but are not able to fly and are easy pickings for dogs. During August, the hair on my head starts to reappear as I will not be tearing it out trying to think of something to pen for your benefit. So enjoy the Summer break and remember, if you are off on a ramble, dress sensibly and protect your skin from the sun, nettles, insect bites and ticks. Ticks that have dropped from animals and live in the long grass are particularly nasty, so when rambling, cover your legs well. The Rambler Save the date Saturday 25th August Pop up Restaurant at Woodlands House Pop up Restaurant at Woodlands House for one evening. A welcome drink will be served on the Deck (weather permitting) followed by a three course meal (menu confirmed next month) Minimum donation of £20 per person would be highly appreciated and please bring your own drinks. Choose from your favourite book, a family favourite or even a local author – as always, props could be endless!!! It’s up to you!! And it’s FREE to enter!! So go on, together with your family or group, put your thinking caps on; search the loft or shed for ideas, reminisce or browse the internet, choose your character and send in your entry form. Note: Entries must be returned to Jane Sinnott no later than Saturday 1st September 2018. Newbie to the village or not entered before? This could be your year! Join in the fun! If you have any queries with regard to the arrangements, need ideas or need to know how to make or position your scarecrow, please contact the organisers – we will be happy to help!
