COLOR US RED, WHITE AND BLUE! This Month, UNC-TV Honors the Service of Our Nation’s Military Veterans

Celebrate the men and women of the armed forces with an unforgettable all-star, star-spangled musical Salute to the Troops: In Performance at the White House, Friday, November 7, at 9 PM.

Then, on Veteran’s Day, Tuesday, November 11, at 9 PM, dive into Navy SEALs—Their Untold Story, to learn the story of the transformation of U.S. Navy frogmen into Navy Sea, Air and Land (SEAL) elite warriors. Despite the widespread attention paid to the SEALs since their heralded raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound, their story remained untold. Through firsthand accounts, including that of a D-Day demolition team member, and never-before-seen footage and personal mementoes, this documentary shares how changing threats in the last half century caused constant evolution for these clandestine commandoes.

In addition, the UNC-TV LearningMedia website (unctv.pbslearningmedia.org) also honors those who served with fascinating feature stories about veterans from across our nation.

LANDSCAPES OF THE HEART: THE ELIZABETH SPENCER STORY Premieres Tuesday, November 25, at 9:30 PM

In Landscapes of the Heart: The Elizabeth Spencer Story, produced by Sharon Swanson and premiering on UNC-TV Tuesday, November 25, at 9:30 PM, director Rebecca Cerese chronicles the life of a Southern author whose poignant stories of race, gender and sexuality during tumultuous times in America continue to resonate and are finally earning critical praise.

Spencer’s best known work, Light in the Piazza, became a 1962 film starring Olivia De Havilland and George Hamilton; more recently its adaptation as a Broadway musical won six Tony awards. Her Pulitzer Prize-nominated novel, The Voice at the Back Door, lifted the veil on Southern race issues (predating Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird). It also left her essentially exiled from her life in the South for many years.

Spencer’s career includes a total of nine novels and seven books of short stories. Now in her 90s, she continues writing from her Chapel Hill home. In personal interviews with the author, as well as with leading literary lights Lee Smith, Hodding Carter, Allan Gurganus, Randall Kenan and Pulitzer-winner Douglas Blackmon, this film not only explores the life, times and experiences of the author, but reveals Spencer’s courage to create non-traditional work, especially at a time when doing so was not only unpopular but fraught with risk. Thank you for your support!

BEHIND THE SCREEN Meet UNC-TV’s Jeff Smith

North Carolina Now correspondent Jeff Smith is Carolina born and bred. Born in Greensboro, Jeff graduated from Raleigh’s Athens Drive High School, and even then he was all about television. Jeff joined the Athens Drive video club as a sophomore, eventually served as president, and helped produce the school’s in-house TV program.

Then Jeff headed off to college to play baseball—as a middle relief pitcher—but television was never out of the picture. After graduating with a broadcasting degree, Jeff worked for WWAY, the ABC affiliate in Wilmington. The commercial television merry-go-round then led to stops at WRIC in Richmond, VA, WGHP in High Point, WXII in Winston-Salem and WBBH in Fort Myers, FL. After a brief stint in the golf business in Florida, Jeff and his family were ready to come home to North Carolina—and to television. In 2003, Jeff joined UNC-TV. Public television has indeed been a homecoming.

“UNC-TV is all about family—my own family, and working here is like a family, t oo. We’re brothers and sisters at UNC-TV.” Jeff appreciates the opportunity to tell good stories and dig into details without having to rush from one spot news story to another. His favorite projects are “long format specials, like the flight refueling and navy destroyer specials, working with our creative team to really go into things in depth.” With a 3 year old and kindergartener at home, Jeff and his wife also appreciate UNC-TV as so many other parents do. “It’s great to know that our kids have a safe place to watch TV that will help them learn.”

That’s what family members do for each other, Jeff.

DINE AS DOWNTON DOES! Join Us for a Luncheon & Screening with Alastair Bruce, Friday, December 5, at Noon, at The Umstead Hotel & Spa in Cary

With your gift of $150, enjoy lunch at the beautiful Umstead Hotel & Spa in Cary, Friday, December 5, with special guest Downton Abbey historian Alastair Bruce! As the person responsible for the series’ historical accuracy and etiquette, Alastair makes sure every detail you see on the screen recreates early-20th century Britain.

Along with lunch, you’ll be treated to a sneak peek of the fascinating, new documentary The Manners of Downton Abbey as it follows Alastair as he helps the Downton Abbey cast navigate the era’s social behaviors.
