Jan had visited other communities with successful Art Guilds and Open Studios and had asked herself the ques- tion, Why not here? Rebecca moved here from an urban area with a large artist collective which hosted successful Open Studios. Rebecca brought that idea and experience with her when she moved to Anderson Valley, wanting to translate the collective experience from an urban setting to a rural one. If there is a mission statement for Open Studios and the Artist Guild, says Peggy Dart, participating artist and the guild's web mistress, it is this: The arts are an The integral part of a thriving community life, providing cultural interaction, individual expression, and a healthy economic environment. Notably, Anderson Valley is also home to one of the bahlest art scenes around. [Bahlest is Boontling—a language that originated with women and children in the hops fields and became spoken word for Valley residents – for “excellent” or “great.”] This Memorial Day weekend visitors and locals alike may enjoy more than the scenic redwoods, wine tasting, and awesome vistas along meandering Highway 128. Anderson Valley Open Studios 2014, May 24, 25, 26 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., will bring the artists of the Anderson Valley and their art closer to the public, as fifteen of the valley's finest artists and craftspeople offer in-studio glimpses of their work and works in progress. Open Studios Rebecca Johnson, Alexis Moyers, Colleen Schenck, and Jan Wax, who are still active in Anderson Valley Open Studios and Anderson Valley Artist Guild, collaborated in initiating and founding the first "I have been immersed in art all my life.
