Required Equipment: Clothing appropriate for sunny & warm, cold & wet, hail or snow. Waterproof, breathable jacket & pants. Sturdy footwear. Water.

Recommended Equipment: Food, hat, radio, long pants or zip off pants, sunglasses, sunblock, trekking poles, gloves, whistle, polar-tec head band, binoculars, camera. 1st aid kit, blister treatment, headlamp. Money for Phantom Ranch “treats” or t-shirt. Yaktrax or instep crampons if there is ice on the trail at the rim. Be sure to bring enough food for such a long and strenuous hike.

Cautions and Special Preparations: Be prepared for every type of weather. The weather in the Grand Canyon in April can range from snowstorms on or below the rim, to 90+* on the floor.

Description: The planned hike is to go down the to Indian Gardens, then take the east to the . At the South Kaibab Trail descend to the . Cross the River via the Kaibab Suspension Bridge to Phantom Ranch. Leave Phantom Ranch and cross the Silver Suspension Bridge and proceed along the following beside the Colorado River to the Bright Angel Trail. Hike back up to the South Rim by the Bright Angel Trail. This hike is an individual effort and is VERY STRENUOUS. Hikers will find their own comfortable pace both descending to Phantom Ranch and ascending back up to the South Rim. Hopefully we will be able to stay in contact by radio.

OPTIONS: Combinations of the following listed trails. Maximum mileage that will be awarded is 21.5 miles. Notify the hike leader of the trails you intend to use. No permits are required for these trails. Bright Angel Trailhead to Indian Gardens (4.6 miles) and the Tonto Trail junction = 4.7 miles Tonto Trail (between Bright Angel Trail and South Kaibab Trail) = 4.1 miles South Kaibab Trail from the Tonto Trail Junction to Phantom Ranch = 2.9 miles Phantom Ranch to Bright Angel Trail at Colorado River = 2.1 miles Bright Angel Trail to the South Rim = 7.7 miles South Kaibab Trailhead to Tonto Trail Junction = 4.4 miles from Bright Angel Trailhead to South Kaibab Trailhead = 4.5

WATER AVAILABILITY: You can refill your water bottles at Indian Gardens and Phantom Ranch only. The water spigots at the 1.5 mile house and 3 mile house on the Bright Angel Trail will not be running until May.
